Centre Back... Who do we go for?

Toby at 25m is a no brainer. But he has rejected 150k + at Spurs . So doubt he would come anything under 200k as wages and I don't think he is worth it for 4 years

Koulibaly for 75m should be okay but again, we have too many pressing concerns where money could be well spent.

Manolas at 36m is an easy choice. Young enough, Roma would sell and should be a available for reasonable wages .

If Barcelona signs De Ligt, United should do the possible to get Todibo.

De Ligt. If not, Ferro should be looked at. Ferro is comfortable on the left side, good with the ball, good in the air and reads the game quite well.

Aldeweireid would also be good but I'm scared of these ageing players who loves to use United as retiring home.

Ferro? From Benfica? He's not Utd material yet, despite having potential to become a very good defender.

Aldeweireid is 30, which nowadays is still a very good age for a center back. most of top center backs play until 35 nowadays.

Not always the case Bayern are desperately trying to get rid of their 30 year old CBs.

Skriniar looks the part for me - young, tall, aggressive, composed. I think he'd complement Lindelof well.

But perhaps we'll go for the cheap stop-gap of Toby as we've got to spend money elsewhere in the squad.

Ultimately though, I'd hope that the board will sanction the player that Ole (or this mystery DoF) thinks is the RIGHT player for us - rather than the one that makes the most financial sense.

Inter is filled with sugar daddy money nowdays. It would be a very expensive transfer.

We might be as well to go for a younger talent with the right attributes, like Tah or Andersen.

The more established CBs look either prohibitively expensive or past their best.

Aldeweireid isn't bad to have but I'm just scared of these ageing players who love using our club for their pension funds.

That said, I wouldn't mind to have both Aldeweireid and Ferro here. I know Benfica would be touting huge millions for him by the time he'l becomes a finished article. So why not move in for him now? He's got huge potential and seem to be comfortable on the left side of the central defence. He's also great in the air, can read the game quite well and has got terrific passing skill from what I have seen from him so far. No doubt he's not the finished article yet but his potential looks quite good, am I right?

Aldeweireid prefers to play on the right side than on the left side and he's not that great in the air. I wouldn't mind a combo of Aldeweireid and Ferro in defence, which would give us both the experience and young potential.

About Ferro: yes, I even think he's better than Ruben Dias, bar experience. Not physically because Ruben Dias is a force of nature (his main strength), but in every other department he's a very modern center back.

Aldeweireid is quite tall, doesn't need to jump that high, I guess. And he's clearly an upgrade to the squad.

But as some people already pointed: the CB's will only come if someone leaves, which is going to be tough to see it happening. A lot of our players are considered "damaged goods on sky rocket wages" and there are few clubs who can offer them those wages. i guess we'll be playing part of their wages if they decide to go for a smaller club.

If we let them rot on the bench or leave them out of the squad and play them in reserve, they will find their way out. If Martial doesn't sit up, he should be let go also. I'm not really comfortable with the wage he's on.

That said, Aldeweireld despite his tall frame isn't that great in the air. He's a bit good in the air but it's not his major strength hence why I would want someone who could complement him. Also, he can't play on the left side. My sight is set on Ferro if we can't get de Ligt. Having both Aldeweireid and Ferro in defence for us wouldn't be bad. By the time, Aldeweireid is having his decline, Ferro who would have learned a lot while playing beside him, could take up the leading/experienced role in the heart of our defence.

Alderweireld makes a lot of sense. Experienced, premier league proven, a leader and a top defender who’s cheap. He would give us 3 years of good service.

Would be great to get him and promote Tuanzebe to the first team so he could learn from Toby and be ready in a season or 2.

We are heavily linked to Ruben Dias. Not credible?

I don't think I will survive another season without a left footed LCB.

Feels like I can't breathe everyone someone gets the ball there and gets closed down.

De Ligt should be priority 1
Agree, go get him, I watched him last night v Juve, watched us until 2nd goal, then switched, he was immense, very good in both boxes, handled Ronaldo . 19 yrs old just pay a decent fee and we get him.

Unless he's set on Barca, won't blame him if he does, top player now, can only get better.

I think it's important we buy younger players.

We are not going to challenge for anything any time soon so we should at least buy players who will be around five years plus.

De Ligt and Koulibaly. If we’re serious about competing next year and building something subsequently. City didn’t mess about: Stones and then Laporte once injuries and errors threw a shadow over what Pep had inherited. Klopp threw the kitchen sink at VVD...

Who made the decision to extend Jones contract ? Ridiculous decision the guys totally outclassed lets finally get rid and let Tuanzabe take his place as backup centreback

All out for De ligt , we need leadership and this kids a born leader with physicality

Alderwied would be good too as id play them both with Lindelof and Smalling as 3rd and 4th choice, with Tuanzabe as backup

He's quite a good center back for the Portuguese League level. I'm almost 100% sure he will never be a world class center back. He might become a good option as a side-kick partner, though. Not as a dominant defender.

IMO it's going to be difficult to get both.
We would be lucky if we sign one of them. One too defender plus Alderweireld for 25m would be great.

First of all, I want us to do everything we can to sign De Ligt. However, it looks like he is heading to Barcelona and in that case I think they have to sell one of Lenglet/Umtiti. We need a left-footed CB that is comfortable on the ball, and both Lenglet and Umtiti would be perfect for us. Umtiti was absolutely brilliant last season, while Lenglet has been solid this season. I don’t think either of them would be happy being fourth choice, and if one of them is available for a reasonable price we should go for him.

Bring back Axel, sign Maguire. RB for me is equally as important, Young cant continue to be a starter

Koulibaly or Varane are literally the only options.

Maguire is another Smalling and Jones. Don’t even get me started on Rice.

If we go into the summer and our big acquisitions are Rice and Maguire while our rivals snap up Koulibaly, Neves and Sancho, we deserve everything we have coming.

De Ligt should be first choice. But I just don’t see why he would want to come here over other teams. Hopefully VDS would have a word with him.

Not a fan of the Varane thing. Strikes me as another di Maria. Someone who has achieved the pinnacle with Madrid, will cost a lot, and may not be all that motivated.

Would rather another 2012 Varane like De Ligt. United should free up as much wages as possible in order to tempt him. A CB rotation consisting of Lindelof, Tuanzebe, and de Ligt would be much better than our current crap.

I think he’s going atletico. We just get linked with every benfica player.

I would rather his teammate, Ferro who's more adept on the left side than him and has got much more potential than Ruben.

I don't like maguire as our LCB but I would be more than happy to swap Jones for Maguire as our RCB & not LCB.

LCB has to be de ligt or Ake.

I'm not suggesting this guy as our primary CB but how is Tierney when he plays as second fiddle LCB? I say this because he could add competition to LB, LWB & LCB even though the chances of that happening is low.

He will probably end up as a CB but I don’t really know why he is rated so highly. He is decent but he’s not going to really improve us over where we are now other than strength in depth.

Tierney? I thought he might be more direct & attacking than shaw whilst being able to cover/take over the useless role that Rojo does here.

He maybe could replace Rojo whilst giving cover for Shaw but I think people have this idea he is the same as Robertson when he is not. He’s not some great attacking threat, he I would say is a better crosser than Shaw but it’s not so other worldly that it over powers what Shaw is better than him at. He’s already been played as a LCB for Scotland and Celtic at times. Think he has even done a stint at RB for Scotland.
