Centre Back... Who do we go for?

I think so. Maybe a cut price Toby in the Jan window and a high profile defender in the summer. We'll get rid of Jones, Smalling, Rojo atleast. Lindelof and Baily will be the backups for the two we're buying. Think it'll be similar to what city did last season.

Ahh, I see what you mean.

That would be ok, I guess. Not sure I would get rid of Smalling. Actually, I'd much quicker get rid of Bailly than Smalling. Plus, we'd probably be able to recoup most of the money we paid for him.

I think Toby and a younger player like de ligt or pavard is needed between jan/next summer. Move on 2/3 of rojo ,Jones, smalling and victor. And get darmain off books too. And hopefully axel and TFM are both ready to fill gaps left and get some mins too.

Until LvG I don't recall there being so much fuss over which side of the CB partnership a defender played, I mean Rio and Vidic were both right footed. There's a full season for Bailly and Lindelof to try and fix up but Jones has to go and Rojo was pretty much gone. Skrinniar, De Ligt and Maguire I think will all be in the mix as options.

I think there's 90% of possibility that Skriniar will come to join us, to replace Bailly on RCB and buy left footed CB to replace Rojo/Jones, hope we'll be in for Romagnoli - left footed CB and is one of best top 5 CB in Serie A and also comfortable in 3 back, AC Milan fans love him and called him the next Nesta.

Skriniar and Romagnoli look so good at tackling and can play out from the back, they could retain possession easily without hoofing the balls but instead, they would drive balls forward and pass to start counter-attacking without taking too many touches, they are soo strong physically that attacking players find it so difficult to go up against them.

Skriniar and Romagnoli partnership would be best and very strong physically, comfortable on balls despite Romagnol has better passing range, strong in the air. Skriniar is good on balls, easily better than Bailly and very strong in the air which Bailly is weak in this attributes, can tackle so good as Bailly, prolific scorer defenders like Smalling. Romagnoli is a ball playing CB that has the better long passing ability, breaking the lines, he often bypasses the press with ease and one of the most technically CB talented in Serie A, very strong as Skriniar as well as in the air, very calm and good tackler but not prolific tackler as Bailly and Skriniar. Skriniar and Romagnoli partnership has all attributes to be the most completed defensive partnership, no weakness in this as all our CB partnership has a weakness, like poor on the balls, injury prone, poor in the air.

There's no way we can get Romagnoli easily, they rate him so highly and he's Italian, living in his home country, loved by many AC Milan fans.

The two centre backs at the club I can't say us selling are Smalling and Bailly. No way will they be sold. Lindelof I believe is unlikely to leave as well. If anyone leaves its Rojo and/or Jones.

If anyone comes in I still think it will be Alderweireld or Maguire.

I also think some dispute remains between woodie and mourinho about smalling. Woodie possibly didn’t agree to sell Smalling. Somehow I feel Mou wants smalling replaced. And Rojo and jones will leave at the end of their contracts

I like Bailly's potential and like to give him more time to improve. He's 23 which is quite young for a CB. I'll rate him after he get to play next to a experienced CB like Toby. With his age we could easily recoup the fee we paid even after couple of years if he shows no sign of improvement.

He signed a mega contract extension recently and they were quoting €100m before. Can’t see it happening but he’d be my number 1 choice.

We'll need to pay a giga load of money for a defender anyway. It's inevitable imo.

Smalling and Koulibaly will be a great pairing.

Romagnoli is class, impressed with him whenever I watched him.

On the other hand a partnership of Skriniar and Romagnoli, I feel lacks pace. Bot are very good young CB with potential to be one of the best, but I feel they would be much better suited with a faster CB.

What makes you so sure?

Our defence situation, Skriniar is probably one of the most obtainable top CB, our offers rejected for him, but apparently, they only want more than 70m.

I think it's fine if they have a good positioning, Spurs can do with Toby and Vert as well, they are not really fast. I don't know about Skinner's pace, it would be better if he can sprint same as Bailly.

IIRC Evans liked to play on the right side as well and Rio had to switch to the left side to accommodate him under Fergie.

Another good example, Neville was on about it the other night saying in his playing days he couldn't recall it being a major issue which side of the partnership you played on, perhaps it's the increase in playing out from the back that has CB's wanting to start on their strongest footed side.

I agree, top class CB can compensate for the lack of pace, but then there is Rio Ferdinand and how he had it all

Bailly and Skriniar would make a fine duo me thinks actually, if the Ivorian had a brain transplant that is.

Smalling is nowhere near as bad as people make him out. Yes he doesn't have much of a passing game (still better than Jones and Rojo though) and makes the odd mistake (as do all CBs, especially our current crop) but he is generally consistent in his performances and he understands the club.

I wouldn't be selling him at this stage but looking for someone consistent to play next to him (either in a 2 or a 3) or have him as back up if we can get 2 new CBs in, which seems unlikely.

Bailly and Skriniar partnership is more likely to concede foul and penalty considering they are both prolific tackle, they'd get bumping into each other but it would look so good in Fifa games. We'd need CB who can be reading of the game so well and be good at an interception, Romagnoli is easily better at this, he has every attribute we would look for, strong in the air, so physically stronger, good on balls, very calm but not prolific tackler like Skriniar and Bailly. If we want so fast CB, we have to get Varane instead of Skriniar but more expensive.

So you feel Romagnoli would be a better option for us if we are bringing one CB? I wouldn't mind that either. What about Pavard? I like the look of him, and could be available for cheap.

I think Pavard is going to Bayern. If I recall, didn't they have an agreement for him next summer? I like the look of him and can pick a good pass between the lines. If we are bringing two CB, I'd want Romagnoli to partner other new CB but if we are bringing one, Varane or Skrhinir that's it.

I would think also that now there are less people wanting to go down the outside of you and more wanting to go on the inside so it’s forcing fullbacks or defenders to tackle on their non favourite foot. Like Young vs Salah, Salah prefers to go inside so playing on to Young’s strong foot. If you’re a left footed CB on the left instead of him coming central across you you’d try and force him to go inside of you and the fullback to an area where he is limited and you’re in a stronger position to limit his danger whilst also being on your strong side.

It probably has a lot more tactical significance than what we were used to back in the day.

I think the agreement with Bayern was rubbished by some of the Stuttgard officials, but regardless, they will probably bend over for the mighty Bayern and sell for 35m. I think he could be a good option. Varane is unrealistic I feel, but Skriniar and Romagnoli can be bought if we offer enough. I wouldn't mind either.

He’s the only defender at the club that has shown any sort of consistency over the last three years.

He can’t go anywhere.

Could be, I hope it is not true. I'd love to have Pavard but he'd need prolific tackler to partner him, kind of like how Vidic compliment Rio so well.

I can see Alderwierald coming in Jan for 30-35 million. Maguire wont be bought as he is overpriced

The rise of the inverted winger being a factor is an interesting theory, certainly makes sense and combined with so many sides now playing out from the back gives a clearer picture of why the side a CB plays on has become a bigger deal over the past few years.

Hope it's a young mobile up and coming CB for the future, and not a 30 year old quick fix.

No one in my opinion, Varane/Alderweireld/Skriniar/Maguire/Godin/Chiellini/Jimenez are all of the standard required but no chance we get any of them realistically.

We either blow a load on Maguire or get Alderweireld next summer, otherwise it will be a relative unknown.

If scouts do their job, they will get us a Top young CB for the future, who can go on to be great for us.

What about Umtiti? Barcelona recently signed Lenglet and both are left footed. I can't see both of them regularly starting together ahead of Pique.

It's true - it was only a thing when LVG came
It did seem that way but, looking back to our best ever CB partnership, Rio was always on the right and Vidic was always on the left. I mean, there was never a big deal made about it from what I remember, but they obviously had their preferred sides.

Poor LVG, he does get blamed/crap for everything on the Caf....

It is definately a thing; especially in possession-oriented teams when the CBs play wide. Its a big plus to have a leftfooted CB in such a team, thats not something that LvG made up himself. Another thing is that there are fewer leftfooted players so a lot of naturally rightfooted players will have to play to the left. But its very much a thing.

Hi Yagami,

Yes I agree - that's what I mean it wasn't a big issue. It's only since recently it seems to be a big deal.

To be honest I would get rid of Bailly, Lindelof and Jones. And I would keep Smalling and Rojo whilst trying to bring in Toby, Skriniar and Slabhead.

Yeah poor LVG, thanks to that moron we ended up with a mediocre CB like Rojo just because he was left footed.

Apart from his utter inability to stay fit, he's been no worse than the last two we've brought under Mourinho.

Toby at a discount on January.

Not to Mina. We already have Lindelof as a youth with potential.

Not to Maguire. He is overrated due to him being English
