Central Defenders - Which one do you want ?

If we buy one centre-back, who would you prefer?

The FIFA World XI is decided by votes from people with knowledge far superior to yours, so I expect you to take that seriously. I agree that David Luiz maybe didn't deserve the spot, but he is without a doubt a great footballer and makes up a perfect pair with Thiago Silva. No centre back around Marquinhos' and Stones' age would've outcompeded Luiz so that's just a stupid argument from you.

No I don't watch him every week, but does that deprive my right of having a valid opinion on him? Do you watch Stones every week? Do you watch Marquinhos every week since you seem to rate Stones over him? No one watches every player every week but one can still have an opinion on players. I'm quite sure I have watched the two of them more than you.

People voted Stones because they misinterpreted the poll I guess. The poll asks who you prefer and not who you think we'll sign. I think many are voting on the former.

And how come you use a single game as an argument on Luiz being shit or whatever your point is? But still, you expect me to watch Marquinhos every game in order to state my opinion on him. Senseless.

Single game on Luiz being shit? I could use many if I wanted to.

You know Gary Cahill ousted David Luiz and guess what. He is British. Chelsea have been linked with Stones and he'd make a good partner alongside Cahill.

The fact that you want us to sign Marquinhos, when you haven't even watched him much this season too is baffling. The same goes for wanting to spend £70m on Gareth Bale. I take it you haven't watched him too this season. £50m would be the best offer based on this season.

So now you agree Luiz shouldn't be on that list along with Silva. Finally some sense coming out of that brain. Do you really think that list has any validity when Luiz and Silva were on there? Over Godin, Boateng and Miranda.

Voted Laporte because he's the best "bang for your buck" CB likely to be gettable. He would play well with any of Smalling/Jones/Rojo and give us a 4 CB rotation as good as anyone (not to mention young). Hummell's lack of speed could be disastrous in the PL, particularly if we play a high line, and Otamendi (who we seem to be buying) is more of a Vidic - fine if you have Rio, not so much otherwise.

Either Hummels or Godin would be fine.
Godin would be my #1 pick, that man is immense and his injury record is better than Hummels.

There are reports Gimenez at Atletico has about a 19m (Euros) release clause, so I think he'd be my first choice. He's 20 but he's basically taken Miranda's job and has excelled for Uruguay.

He's kind of stout but I've never really seen him get roasted for pace or height.

That kind of value is just too good to pass up.

Godin, his partner, would also be a solid move in that it he could start for 2-3 years and immediately solidify our backline and hopefully one of Jones, Rojo or Fosu-Mensah will be ready to take over as he's aging.

I'll add that I watched the Juve-Lazio cup final and De Vrij was impressive. Excellent composure and aggressive tackling.

Gary Cahill played ahead of Luiz because it's Chelsea. The same reason why Oscar was preferred ahead of Mata. Defense is all that matters for them.

The sentence in bold is just bizarre. Isn't 10+ games this season enough to have an opinion on a player? And yes, I have watched Bale even more than Marquinhos this season. How much have you watched those two? Do you think that one can only want to sign a player if one has watched like 20 games of the player over the last season?

That should be the case since we are talking about defenders.

Gary Cahill was played ahead of David Luiz because he can defend better. You know something you have to be good at when you a defender. I don't think you quite grasped what defending is yet.

I rather trust Mourinhos judgement on defenders.

So you seen a player for 10 games and want us to sign him for £45m. I suggest you go back to FM. Also a player we realistically will not be getting because he just signed a new contract. We have as much chance getting Ramos from Madrid. He shouldn't even be on the poll.

You say that the centre back position is all about defending, yet you prefer Stones over Marquinhos

Where did I say I prefer Stones over Marquinhos? And you haven't watched Stones, if you think he can't defend. I bet your scout on FM did not recommend him or something.

Did you miss the bit at the start of the thread where it says realistic target? Marquinhos is not one considering he just signed a new contract. You have reading issues.

What are we discussing if you agree that Marquinhos is a better signing/player than Stones? Our discussion started when I couldn't understand how there were more than three times as many votes on Stones than Marquinhos, in a poll asking which CB you prefer and not who you think will be a realistic signing or who you think we'll sign. Then you came in and started defending Stones. Now you suddenly agree that Marquinhos is a better signing? Maybe you should change your vote to him then.

You're discussing just for the sake of it. WUM

For the last time, Marquinhos is not a realistic target because he just signed a new contract last month. What part of that don't you understand? We have more chance of getting Thiago Silva from PSG.

Stones is a more realistic target and we have more chance of getting. And he's a very good defender, has played in the premier league, so won't need to adapt and is British. Before you threw your hissy fit that people weren't voting for your muppet signing.

And Barca tried all summer last year trying to get your muppet signing and couldn't. PSG have no reason to sell especially he's just signed a new contract now. Don't know why that is hard for you to understand.

How can you just exclude Marquinhos from going to us? Do you have any inside information? Yes, he signed a new contract, but he's not a starter for PSG and for a high fee, I reckon PSG would be very interested in selling since they need the money so they don't get fecked by FFP. Getting £45 million for Marquinhos means that they can spend £45 million more in the summer, which would've been great for them. We can even use Di Maria as a bait, so to say that Marquinhos isn't realistic is just plain stupid.

Hummels - Too slow.
Godin - Not young.
Miranda - Too old.
Stefan - Who?
Garay - Midtable.
Marquinhos - Too short and expensive.
Otamendi - Too short and expensive.
Varane - Too inconsistent.
Laporte - Too young.
Stones - Midtable.
Dragovic -Shit hair.
Subotic - Average.

:wenger:

You must have read my mind

But we do need an experienced CB and let Evans go

Would anyone take David Luiz?

I know it's a properly out-there shout but he has all the raw attributes Louis wants in a centre back. Quick, strong, versatile, great on the ball, dead ball expert, experience in every department that we need. The only thing is his positioning is fecking ass backwards at times.

I'd back Louis to work on that as the player gets older and bring the best years out of him.

Many people said that about Rafael in the summer. Was supposed to become the best RB around under LVG.

And no, I wouldn't take him.

No no no no no.

 He was also pretty good throughout the season, but who cares about that.

Only on this forum would John Stones get so many votes

I voted Varane because he's the most talented, but also impossible to get.

My (biased) pick would be Vertonghen, but he's not a poll option. He's a better in posession than our current CBs, he's left footed which LVG likes in his LCB, he's got leadership qualities, and he's also a bit of cnut.. something we sometimes lack in my opinion.

It would make sense as an LVG signing given his background (formed by Ajax) I would say.

He's got the tools but lacks that discipline and proper positioning. And without those two all his other qualities aren't of much use. I have the Brazil vs Germany match on my hard drive and whenever i watch it i keep finding myself shaking my head in disbelief at how poor his positioning was. Possibly the worst display by a center back i have ever seen.

what about toby alderwield??

he was brilliant for southampton last season, so we know he can handle the premiership.. again with defenders these days he has fitness worries..

Gary Cahill. Why not pop in a bid? 30 next birthday, great addition to Jones & Smalling. Was dropped by JM earlier in the season so might wave two fingers in Jose's direction. What do Chelsea pay him, between 4 & 6 mill I'd bet. Offer him nearer 8 & four years. He's a northerner but I don't know about his wife though. If she's from London, forget it.

Players can always be bought and sold, but pissing off Real Madrid by stealing Varane would be priceless.

I hope and expect that we will sign Mats Hummels, I just like him as a defender and he's at a great age now. Very experienced for that age too! He's a winner, plain and simple. I also think he's the only one we really need as I expect Evans to be on his way. Wouldn't surprise me if we sign another, but it's hard to see unless the plan is to send both McNair and Blackett on loan, but that seems a bit counter-productive of their development in the first-team this season. I do think LvG sees Smalling as first-choice.. So it's a case of signing someone to partner him and have Jones/Rojo as the back-up IMO.

We need a seasoned experienced CB to compliment Smalling, Varane is one for the future but for our intents and purposes, we really need someone like Godin, Otamendi or Hummels.

Godin was my #1 pick and his release clause is far less than Hummels or Otamendi but for some reason he has never been on our radar (to my knowledge).

Exactly this.

So what happens when Smalling and/or Jones are injured? Their injury records over the last few years is not encouraging to say the least.

I think Smalling should start but if we dont go into next season without a top CB, we are only asking for trouble.

Alright, own up. Which 2 voted for De Vrij?
