In order of preference:

Varane
Gimenez
Laporte
Otamendi
Godin
Hummels
Marquinhos
Stones

Any of these would do. All would cost in the vicinity of £30m.

If we're going budget, I wouldn't mind Dragovic, Schar, Miranda or De Vrij either.

Varane if there was actually a chance.

Realistically:

1. Laporte
2. Stones
3. Dragovic

Would be pleased with Otamendi or Godin too.

I honestly think we have the best group of central defenders in the league and the likes of Otamendi aren't going to improve us. If we could get Hummels or Varane then that would be great, but it's not going to happen. What we have is fine, we need another midfielder to replace/backup Carrick, not more central defenders.

You're wumming surely....
The fact that McNair and Blackett have played the amount of games they have this season, added to that, the fact we are going to be in Europe next season so even more games... surely you're on a wum... surely

I promise you we don't, despite the level of defending in the Premier League being atrocious.

I opted for Stones, get Clyne & you got England's back four for the nearly the next decade.

Preference: Godin & Stones in Jones & Evans out.
I'd settle for Ottamendi in and Evans out.

Varane. Perfect blend of everything we need.

How? Smalling is the only one of our defenders who would get into the Chelsea team, for example. Even with the best goalkeeper in the league in our team this season our defence still wasn't good enough for a real title challenge and we're likely losing that goalkeeper in the summer anyway. Our defence has a long way to go in terms of both quality and fitness....

Laporte would be fantastic, young with great potential and a van Gaal-type of defender. Would take Stones too to be honest, but unrealistic and too expensive right now.
Varane and Hummels are probably over now, Godin would make me happy too. Everything else is a category lower for me and imo not that much better than what we have, if we have to sign any of those it should be at least a young player who van Gaal can mould into a very good defender for his system.

Voted that Dragovic bloke. For the simple reason, id never seen nor heard of Vidic until we where linked with him. Likewise Dragovic. Would love for us to turn him into the next big thing.

I honestly dont think anybody on your list is any better than what we have!

Poor defenders about these days. Gone are the rio, vida, campbell, woodgate, terry, desailly, canavaro, nesta, stam, thuram, puyol, ayala, sensini........even the likes of cordoba, king...... days. Nothing about now comes close to any of them!

Van Gaal prefers a left footed defender at left centre back and with Rojo not impressing, I can see us paying Laporte's release clause of £31 million.

I'd go for Hummels as I think we're lacking experience and an assured presence on the ball at the back. Gimenez, Laporte and Varane will surely go on to be top class CBs.

Varane, followed by Hummels.

Haven't seen enough of a lot of players on that list.

I think we need an experienced defender more then young and promising so Godin, Otamendi, Hummels are in front of Varane, Laporte, Marquinhos, Giminez and Stones for me. Hummels is staying now and I haven't read anything with Godin so that leaves Otamendi who I think would be a very good signing, albeit pricy.

If it was for me we would sign Howedes and a ball playing CB

Given free rein it would have to be Raphael Varane. He's brilliant.

Realistically, I'm not too sure nor bothered, really. Lots of talk regarding Hummels, but I get the impression that many people just like the idea of signing him because of who he is as opposed to having any great deal of confidence in his ability to defend.

Is Godin likely to leave or something? Otherwise, why aren't the likes of Ramos, Thiago Silva, Pepe on that list? I'd like Silva or Ramos just as much as Godin if we're talking about big name experienced defenders. Stones would be a nice Evans replacement, but if we're talking young and unexperienced there are loads of good options.

Marquinhos is my choice. Young but at the same time very mature and has been excellent most of the times I've seen him with PSG.

Think he signed a new deal unfortunately

Otamendi. Need some steel and experience straight away. Then Laporte, then Varane. The latter have huge potential.

Stones or Laporte for me. Would love Godin here, but he would cost a lot at his age.

Get both in so we literally have a halt on signing center backs for the next 10 years, it only makes sense. Not only would they complement each other well, they'd also both complement Smalling and Jones well.

Would love both, but it won't happen.

If we're going to get a centre back, I think we should be looking at someone who can also fill in at full back too - similar to what Rojo does. No secret that Van Gaal likes his versatile players; therefore, I'd probably have Stones. Young, English, good with the ball, good defender, etc. Think he'll fit in perfectly with Van Gaal's philosophy.

Valencia (Stones) - Smalling (Stones) - Jones (Rojo) - Shaw (Rojo)

What of Rojo? You're never going to be able to keep all of them content, five players fighting for 2 spots.
We had 4 this season and it feels like we're short of options. He's also versatile and can play left back.
