Carrick out for four weeks | David McDonnell sucks

We will certainly miss him. Blind is a very good player and is better at linking up with midfielders and being more progressive than Carrick. However, he doesn't quite have the same passing range and ability to shield the defense.

It's nice to have an intelligent midfielder like him though, who can fill in for Carrick and also has room for improvement for the future.

Anyway what type of injury is it? Carrick hasn't been impressive of late but it did seem to me that he had been overworked recently. Could be wrong though.

These are the games he will miss:

Manchester United vs Leicester
Manchester United vs Cambridge U
West Ham vs Manchester United
Manchester United vs Burnley
Swansea vs Manchester United
Manchester United vs Sunderland

And the next FA cup game (should be beat Cambridge.

Sheesh, aren't these games almost the same order from the beginning of the season? Swansea, Leicester, Burnley, Sunderland and MK Dons(Cambridge)? Its that time again!

I think he's guilty of slowing us down too much, and being ridiculously unincisive at the minute.

With that run of games it might not be the worst time to lose him.

Personally I think for all Carrick offers, he's been one of the main culprits for our laboured, slow approach. He dallies on the ball way too long.

Who knows, maybe a certain Spanish midfielder might get a chance now? Nah, probably not.

I think Carrick's been off the pace for a while, after a great start to the season (well when he finally started after missing a few weeks.) This should allow Blind to play in midfield again, where I think he's been at his best. Hopefully, it will also lead to Herrera playing more.

He's miles better than Blind in his natural position so its a big loss. People wanting Blind in that position will realise what a limited player he is compared to Carrick.

Not surprised, he looked very unfit in our last game against cambridge united.

Bizarre the way some folk seem to think this isn't bad news. A couple of weirdos even seem pleased?!?

We've been cack for almost the whole season so far but the only stetch of games where we looked in any way decent (other than isolated spells against garbage opposition) featured Michael Carrick. A sharp improvement as soon as he came back from injury. There's no way this news means anything other than further damage to our season.

Cannot disagree with this

Blinds our closest player to him. But not even that close.
Hopefully this will stop LVG from playing Blind as left wing back and put him back in midfield where he is actually very good.

A massive shame he's out. With that said, I don't think he's been anywhere near as good as suggested this season and I think our upturn in results after his comeback was more of a lucky coincidence as opposed to him making a crucial difference to the side. An unpopular opinion I'm sure.

I also actually prefer Blind in the holding role. His passing isn't as creative but I think he helps us play at a higher tempo, as well as demonstrating more composure when pressed.

So, a bad loss for us, but provided our remaining midfielders remain fit then I don't think it impacts too heavily on the first team.
Completely agreed. He's been way off pace since the turn of the year. And you're right that our turn in firm since he came back from his previous injury looks like a coincidence.

Carrick slows our play down quite abit these days. It would be interesting to see if our overall tempo increase with blind instead.
Blind rotates possession far quicker than carrick. Granted, his passing range isn't as impressive as Carrick but I thought he looked very good in that deep lying possession circulation role

I am in complete agreement with this. I think Carrick came back well but he has dropped his level a bit the last few matches. We'll miss him in some situations, but I am confident in Blind in that role.

Just read the full quotes. Van Gaal seemed to use "four weeks" to represent how long someone would be out with a 'standard' injury in order to stress that Carrick's injury was serious and he would definitely be out for longer than that.

"Muscle rupture" could be really nasty. If he's done a full thickness tear of a big muscle he'll be out for months, rather than weeks. Might even need surgery.

Sorry if these have been posted. All are from Ben Dinnery from Physioroom.

LvG confirms Carrick absence "I think it shall take more than four weeks, it is not a minor injury but a [calf] muscle rupture" #MUFC

Interesting use of the term 'rupture' by van Gaal .... Suggests significant fibre damage & could mean 2/3 months out#Carrick

No stranger to injuries this season LvG typically references soft tissue [tears or strains] never a rupture #Carrick could be serious #MUFC

That would be a big loss.

He's had a "minor setback" according to van gaal.

I think that on the weekend Van Gaal said he'll be back training next week, which I suppose would be this week. Doesn't mean he's set to return for another couple of weeks though.

Considering the teams we have played since he got injured, the answer to this question is it hasn't really. Results certainly haven't been better anyway.
I certainly think we have the case for a Carrick/Herrera CM pairing now. Fingers crossed.

No way, blind is much the better player now, I've grown tired of watching Carrick go in hiding when the going gets tough.

We look more solid in defence with him in midfield. Need to play him and Blind together.

I would like to see the stats on results in games he's played to the ones he hasn't this season. I think we were poor while he was originally injured went on a good run when he came back have gone back to poor since he has got injured again.

Results wise maybe, but we were still playing poorly when he was in the team. We were lucky to win quite a few games when he played also his introduction coincided with a change in formation and the introduction of Fellaini, who also had a big impact.

I think hes a better option in midfield than Fellaini and should play with Blind to cover the back 4 but I don't really think there has been much difference between the 2, in fact maybe Blind has had a few better individual games.

Our home form has been consistent this season but we have only won four matches away from home in the league, Carrick played in 3 of them.

I know that stats like that can be misleading but I do think he plays a big part providing a cutting edge for the team. He plays forward balls that no one else in the team is capable of.

The last bit isn't really true, we have a couple other players who can now play those passes from deep. One of them is Di Maria, Herrera and Blind can chip in too. Two of those away games were Southampton and Arsenal VERY lucky to win both, Carrick didn't play brilliantly in either game.

It's laughable how Carrick is disregarded by a lot of people. He is easily our best passer off the ball; even if the tempo is slow he is more likely to pick a key pass that can turn us from defence in to attack. Blind is good utility player and has got good ability, but passing from deep and starting moves is not one of them. We need Carrick to come back quickly and help us get back to a decent run of form. The longer he is out of the team, the harder a top four finish will become.

Heart nearly stopped when I read this thread title as I thought it was new information - like another 4 weeks from now.

I seriously cannot wait for him to come back. I think that he makes a massive difference.

Agree completely.

Can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading about him slowing us down, Blind being a more handy player, etc.

If we have a change in fortune and start looking more convincing when he's back, will people consider that a decent amount of proof, or just another coincidence?

Carrick can dally on the ball all he likes when he can split defences and initiate attacking moves the way he does at times. Won't bother me. Lord knows he's barely had as many dodgy backward passes snapped up by opposition attackers in his whole United career as Blind has had in his first season. Not a slight on Blind, who I reckon was one of our best signings this season.
