Can you see Diogo Dalot stating a serious claim for the RB-position?

He's not as talented as say Shaw at the same age, whom most of the forum wrote of at Dalot's current age a few years ago. So it'll be harder for him, but he does have a decent enough base level. His dribbling is his best asset, very good for a full back. He needs to work on his final ball which isn't that hard to do, and his defending which is harder to improve.

In short he needs to put a lot of work in, time will tell if he does that or not.
 
I think he should be utilized as cover for Bissaka with a view to see where he falls in terms of reliance by January. As others have stated he could possibly save the club millions. He's certainly nowhere near Bissaka's level
 
There is no way Dalot is good enough to play RB for us. He have big problems in his defensive game. I remember his first season when he always would rush into pressure, only to push to hard and get on the wrong side of the winger leaving an open line to our box.

He hasnt showed anything the last year to qulify playing for us. The only reason he is still here is because we cant get a decent offer to recoup our money.

He has som decent atributes to play rwb in another country, dont think he is PL quality at all.
 
Now that is good thinking. Maybe one of the RB clubs might take him for a position. Salzburg, Leipzeig or that one in Brazil (I think it's Brazil).
 
I don't massively see it. You never know, I think he'd have to step up a hell of a lot from what he's shown for us and even his okay spell at Milan.

I'd like to see it because I'm not a fan of buying in Trippier to be honest, it would solve a lot of problems to have a firing Dalot that can slot in and still has age on his side. But it has to be odds against as I don't think he's really shown enough defensively or offensively.
 
AWB is thrice the player Dalot is. Unfortunately Milan never put in a decent bid so we are stuck with him.

He was never in our "starting XI", he played as both a backup LB and RB at times... The only times he did start, was for rotation or due to injury.
 
I’d be amazed if the stories about letting him stay to fight for his place are more than a transfer market tactic, unless he’s suddenly looking like a completely different player in training.

Feels like a player from a bygone era when our transfer strategy was a complete mess.
 
I think our transfer policy probably suggests something about the way Dalot is seen at the club. Albeit there is a lot of speculation involved in this analysis as who knows what is going on in the market or in training.

If we are telling Atletico there is no way we are paying X for Trippier, and there has only been the most tentative link with Aarons, it suggests right back is not featuring highly in terms of budget prioritisation. Given Williams is ideally going on loan, and even Telles didn't pull up trees last season, we must be at least somewhat content with Dalot's potential to provide able backup.

I don't think it suggests we see Dalot as suddenly emerging as a first choice, and I'm sure if we could get somebody for the right price he'd be gone. But as it is he's the man in possession of that backup role and the club don't seem to be knocking doors down for right backs. There must be at least some confidence in him if that theme continues.
 
The only suitable position I can see working for him is as a wing back in a back five with a more attacking role. Or maybe as a RB against weaker opposition.

He just doesn't look positionally comfortable or authoritative when defending which is a bit of a problem for a defender. He can whip a good cross into the box but he is far too hesitant to bust a gut and get himself into those positions.

Just far too passive in his play for this league.

Hopefully Ethan Laird will have another positive season on loan and will soon be tearing it up for us.
 
I don't think so and I'm not a fan of AWB. Apart from being a better technician I don't see much else he's better at. My biggest gripe with AWB is his positioning and defensive awareness and I think Dalot is worse in both regards.

Don't mind him as a back up and would love for him to prove me wrong.
 
Probably not. But I think he will surprise quite a few posters on here this season
 
AWB is a much better right back than either Dalot or Williams, and I really don't see either getting up to his current level.

Ideally, I'd have preferred selling one of those out, and loaning out the other this season, and brining in someone like Trippier as an experienced, more attack minded fullback to challenge AWB for the spot and to be a genuine starting option that I'd have faith in playing well in a run of starts.

I really don't see that in Dalot or Williams - which is a worry if AWB suffers injury or loss of form. I see more 'potential' in Dalot than Williams as the understudy. However, he's 22 now, and still doesn't have any attribute to a high enough level that you'd need for a Man Utd first choice RB.

He's not reliable defensively. And while he gets forward reasonably well, his attacking end product is limited. He's OK on the ball and linking up in attacks. And can put in a decent cross at times. But he doesn't really hurt teams going forward very often, and isn't reliable defensively, so I'd have no faith in him delivering strong performances should he be needed for a series of starts this season.
 
If we could combine his forward play with AWB defensive play we’d have the next Cafu/Alves on our hands. Hope he stays and is allowed to develop rather than we spending on Trippier. Rather any money left would go on a dm.
 
Nope. Not a very good defender at all. He’s a better winger than a full back. But not a good enough winger to be a mainstay.

He’s not a bad option in games at old trafford where teams are crap and just parking the bus. He would be more useful in those situations than AWB.

I can actually see him being a very good full back for a Barca or PSG where he will be just mainly attacking in about 80% of their games.
 
I don’t see why we don’t just go with Laird as AWB’s back up this coming season and Dalot as third choice if he’s unwanted and simply being kept around because no one will pay for him.

We have this problem year in and year out where we’re basically the only top club in the league that doesn’t manage to move players on for a decent fee or sometimes even a fee at all then use them as squad options throughout the season despite it being known they’re not wanted.

When we pay some of these players astronomical weekly wages, its no wonder we cant shift players.
We wanted to send BW out on loan only for the club (Southampton) to pull out due to his 60k per week wages!
 
Good option when we need to rest AWB against some weaker opponents. Heard he has been impressing Ole in training which might work out in his favour.

But he won't replace AWB.
 
Starting? No.

Rotating? Absolutely.

AWB at times last season seemed very tired. He could still catch almost anyone with a sprint/tackle, but often times he'd be caught out of position and not try to get back fast enough. I remember a couple times he'd do this last season and I think with a bit more rest and concentration, it can be avoided more.
 
I struggle to see it myself but enough big clubs and successful managers seem to rate him so it's entirely possible.

I hope so, we need coverage and someone to push AWB
 
He is better than Williams and is a better defender than Telles and is considerably younger and he can play on both sides.
We should at least give him this season and play him against the weaker teams and take it from there.

Wow this hit me hard, now that you mention it I can't recall a single game where he surpassed an average rating of 6, there might've been some 7s but certainly no 8s, which is crazy when you account the reputation which he came with!
 
There is every chance. I mean, the Caf deemed Brandon Williams better than Shawberto not too long ago.
Diogo is young, working hard and had a good loan last year - he can certainly kick on this season. Whether he can push AWB remains to be seen.
 
He’s too slow. That’s his biggest flaw for me. When he attacks, he leaves a lot of space that he cannot make up. I think in his mid to late 20s he’ll adapt and could become a top fullback. But right now might be too early for that.
 
His main problem is physicality, which can be overcome with experience.

I reckon down the road he'll be a solid player for a top team.
 
For all those saying no chance, which level do you think is further, Telles from Shaw or Dalot from AWB?

The question is not if you think Dalot will become an all time great, it's about mounting a serious challenge and I don't think Wan Bissaka is as nailed as some of you think he is.
 
What is the attacking ability that he supposed to have?

All I noticed whenever he attacked was to cut inside and shoot like he was Ronaldo or something from outside of the box. Now, one of those did lead to the last min penalty at PSG a while ago.

And, AWB is more or less similar age to him.

He's supposed to be one of the fastest at the club.

But I agree, he's the slowest fast player I've seen.

To answer the OP's question though no I can't see it. I don't think Dalot really understands defending.

He needs a good two years in a tough division where defending is battered into him.
