Buying British?

But Sterling is? Might as well throw Stones in that one as well. Those two are perhaps the most overrated players in The UK squad. I'd take Joe Allen every day. There are actually a decent amount of highly influcial players, that aren't being considered

Right now, Maybe not. But if he continues on his form of this season then he should be yes.

The only good prospect beside Rashford with talent enough, and I do not know if Mourinho rates him is Demarai Gray, the problem with buy British is that a normal player is more expensive than foreign players, until England solves that problem, i do not know how they will develop players to the highest level.

I look at Stones and Sterling for example, and I doubt when Pep was at Barcelona or Bayern, he would want to sign those players.

England isn't producing good talent, simple as. There isn't an English international at the moment that would improve us.

Slightly off topic but related enough, I hope: Isn't there an FA rule how many English player a squad must have? I may remember this incorrectly but am sure some Caf users know such a rule by heart if it exists.
(I'm aware that you can always fill a quota with English youngsters from the academy but I guess that wasn't what FA had in mind when they were discussing or implementing such a rule.)

8 homegrown players I believe. Doesn't mean they have to be English though, Pogba counts as one of ours.

It's homegrown, of which we've enough:

Pogba, Lingard, Schneiderlin, Rashford, Jones, Smalling, Young, Rooney, Carrick, Shaw. I think there may be a few from the academy as well but I am not sure.

Gray could be something for sure. How old is he?

Sterling he could have bought imo. Stones; no chance.

Thanks to the both of you for the swift replies!

This is taken from my background from playing FM. I always have issues registering players for European competitions, even though I am using Leverkusen. The previous manager sold all my academy trained players.

In a squad of 25 players, you need to have a minimum of four players trained in your nation, and a minimum of four players trained in your academy. If you do not have the minimum, you must leave the slot blank. Under 21 players need not be registered. Man City does not have 4 players trained in their academy, but they have 4 players trained in England (Delph, Sterling, Clichy and Stones). So Man City only registered 21 players, as they have left the slots for players trained in academy blank. So far, Ihenacho is still considered Under 21, so he does not need to be registered. He will be older next season, and Man City has to sell 1 of the 17 foreigners to make place for him.

If I am not wrong, Man City can actually register not a single English player and register all 17 foreigners. But they will only be limited to 17 Over-21 players and must back the team up with youngsters. This won't happen, because it is easier to find someone from other club than from your own academy.

Bayern were in for Sterling when Pep was there but wanted to pay £20m less than City did.

The Sterling interest goes back to his time at Bayern though.

It's a tough one. I think the calibre of British and Irish player as slightly declined over the past 10 years bar a few exceptions. It's a shame because Utd have always had a core of Brit/Irish players and is part of the clubs history. No point in buying British for the sake of it.

Alli? Stirling?

Unless your saying Herrera and Fellaini are better than Alli... Or that depay and Lingard are better than Stirling
Both Alli and Sterling are unavailable. And to be fair, I wouldn't ever swap Herrera for Alli.

Isn't that only for that Champions League? Think it's only being trained in England for all 8 for the PL.

Well considering Sterling is a winger I'd say Martial and/or Mkhitaryan all day over him.

And Ali is more of an attacking midfielder so I'd take Pogba all day.

I would have taken Sterling at United had it ever been a possibility. He'd never be a guaranteed starter hence the fee could never have been the best part of £50 million, but he'd be a welcome asset here.

Streling was available a short while ago though. As was Henderson.
Sterling wasn't available. Liverpool were never going to sell him to us, even if we offered more than City.

Henderson wasn't that good back then, and to be fair, I am not that sure that he is that good now.

.

We'll never know re Sterling .. every player has his price.

As for Henderson., I dont have strong opinion except that he is playing in the heart of a Liverpool team who is romping it and doing much better than ours, and that must have something to do with him!

What we need to do is sign the next Bale or Dele Alli. Very good british players are being produced, and most would want to join us. Just need to be in there first.

We are always trying evidenced by recent purchases of Jones and Shaw. Not worked out that well. Not to say we should not carry on.

I do not know that, for me he is not Barcelona or Bayern level, but who knows, maybe he will get better under Pep, I am not a big fan of Sterling.

At this moment in time, I think Rose definitely offers more than Shaw. I actually think both the Spurs fullbacks are underrated on here.
I can understand not wanting it though, with Shaw's potential.

Indeed. I really like Rose and Walker as fullbacks. Decent defensively, great engines and look a threat going forward.

No one I can think of who's broken through. So probably the best of the academies... but it's a dangerous slope to start throwing big money at kids. Reece Oxford?

You may be right, but I am not sure. I just saw the Premier League website and it seems to me that Chelsea has 8 English-trained players, but they have more players trained by other clubs than players trained by their own academy.

Walker is still decent I think. I do rate him. But he wouldn't improve us given how much work Tony puts in for us. Rose is as average as they come. He's actually highly overrated on Caf by some. I'd be mortified if we were in for Danny Rose to be our first choice LB.
