I wasn't a child and the reason you can't remember was because it didn't seem as bad as it is now.
From The Doc's appointment and the Board's backing of him in late '72 onwards, United appeared to be a well-run organisation with a Board that was generally intent on doing what it took to make the team successful. Sure there were mistakes along the way, but most of the decisions (manager appointments and dismissals, player recruitment) appeared to be the right ones. The frustration, which continued well into the SAF era, was almost entirely attributable to United's perennially awful luck with injuries.
The fact that we still seem to be a shambles off the field over eight years after SAF retired does make it increasingly hard to believe that the current lot will ever get their act together. I've not given up yet on Arnold's appointment leading to a Better Way, but have to say I'm sceptical...
