Gaming Building a gaming PC

650 watt PSU will be more than enough for 3070. You could run a 3080 of off 650 watt PSU.

It would be but a PSU is the one component that can last through multiple generations. I would go a bit higher personally as it will last for any upgrades in the future and would mean there is no need to replace at extra cost. For that build (and 3080) it would be fine yeah. Depends if you're looking for now or the next few years I guess.

Second this. Bought a 750w PSU 5 years ago and it'll definitely see me through a new GPU upgrade this year and CPU/mobo/ram upgrade next year some time. Definitely one component I would overspend on, especially to get something quality that will last.

All this talk of next gaming generation and my recently re-knidled love of gaming (my fiance got a job so I actually get to play games again) has me really fancying building a new pc, maybe instead of pre-ordering a PS5. Anyway, i still have an old gaming PC and I'm not sure if its worth trying to salve any parts from it or just going for a whole new build, what do people think, here's its specs:-

CPU - i5 2500k
8GB RAM
Mobo - MSI Z68 (old...)
GPU - GX 970
Boot SSD

I assume the dated mobo and CPU would mean starting scratch would be justified. For starting from scratch, I'm years out of date when it comes to available hardware and what's suitable for gaming at a decent setting these days. I've not decided a budget yet, seeing what's available and what you can get for what first. Any advise would be welcome.

What's your budget?

And what's your aim? Like 1080p, 1440p? High refresh rate?

I'm sure you could get 200 or 300 for that rig above - the GTX 970 is still a decent card, and it has an SSD. Plenty of people out there happy to just get a cheap old gaming/productivity rig.

I would hold off for a few months. New AMD CPU's and GPU's, and Nvidia cards means that stuff will price-drop, so figure out the above first :)

I haven't really decided budget yet until I have an idea what I can get for what.

I'd like to upgrade to 1440p at 60fps so it feels like a bit of an improvement, been used to gaming at 1080 for some time. My main thing is I'm hyped as anything for Cyberpunk and I was going to settle for it on PS4 as I'm not confident of my PC being up to it, but thought maybe this would be a decent time to upgrade my PC as I missed out on the PS5 pre-orders too. But as you say, I've never actually thrown anything at this rig that its not been able to handle, but definitely don't expect max setting anymore.

I've seen the hype around the new nvidia chips, so imagine they're pretty decent and as you say will drop in price before long.

Well the main advantage of a PC over consoles is high refresh rate so you should prioritize that, in my opinion at least. You will notice a bigger difference going from 1080p 60hz to 1080 144mhz than you would to 1440p 60hz.

Personally I think 1440p 144hz is the sweet spot right now. The jump in cost from 1080p > 1440p isn't much at all whereas 1440p > 4k is pretty significant, even with the new NVidia cards.

I'm not the most tech litterate, but whats the difference between 60hz and 144mhz? Is it the same as FPS? It sounds petit, but I wanted a larger monitor than 24" because that's what I use at work and I just want it to feel different to my work PC, and I assumed a bigger screen would make a smaller amount of pixels more obvious. I do understand what you're saying though, when I've swapped between the 2, the fluidity of the higher frames is what's always stood out the most more than the detail or resolution.

But I don't want to go as far as 4k like you say, seems a bit too much of an expense.

He miss-wrote when he put an m there

It's 144hz

FPS is frames per second. If you have 60 FPS and a 60hz monitor you have a stable picture. Less and you get tearing or stuttering

Im gaming more than I have in YEARS on my PC

It's a dell Optiplex 790 DT

i5-2xxx
GTX 750 sff

All 2nd hand. All in less than £200 including SSD.

It's my HTPC. It launches playnite when turned on so I never see windows.

I game on my sofa with my PS4 controller

Hz is monitor refresh rate. 144hz is a massive difference in all tasks on your pc, not just gaming, it's far better for your eyes and a far smoother experience, even simply moving your mouse cursor. It a much bigger difference than going from 1080p to 1440p.

Fps is the game engine, and it's not just graphics it's stuff like how many times a second it checks for controller input and all that too.

With modern monitors and variable refresh rates, it doesn't matter as much if the game's fps doesn't match the monitor's (it can also ideally go higher) but 144fps @ 144hz (actually, if you ever cared enough, setting it to 143hz is the way) is a huge leap.

Intel® Core™ i7-9700 Processor
- Octa-core
- 3.0 GHz / 4.7 GHz
- 12 MB cache

- 16 GB DDR4 (2400 MHz)

- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super

I got my pc for free (long story short) the computer got delivered to the wrong address at work, no one ever mentioned it got told by boss new desktops arrived (months later) go set them up accidentally came across this pc started setting it up looked at case and specs realised not a standard office desktop. Left it a while no one ever claimed it so told boss i'm taking it and that's that.

As i got it for zero expense i'll probs look at getting another one with a 3090 in the future, i haven't kept up with processors etc for a while so i'm not sure personally if its worth upgrading this one's components or just going for a brand new setup

As far as monitors go, I'd say a 27" 1440p display @ 144Hz with Gsync/Freesync support is the sweet spot. Something like the LG 27GL850 UltraGear. If you're building a new pc, I wouldn't aim for any less than that, but more than that is a luxury.

That sounds ideal to me, like you say considering I don't have an unlimited budget any more could probably be better spent else-where. Is there anything I need to consider with GPUs to run something like that though?

Does Playnite work well? I've found myself exclusively using my consoles for a while now because of convenience and sitting at a PC at work for 8 hours doesn't make sitting at one when I come home feel too appealing.

You've convinced me, I'll need to look at some different monitors available. Is 1440p at 144hz particularly demanding for recent mid-range GPUs?

Depends on your settings. I have the 27GL850 and untill recently paired it with a 2080 Super. Got about 120fps in Warzone, Raytracing off I believe, otherwise max settings. Friend of mine has the same screen and a 2060 and it works just fine, but he has turned down the graphics a bit to get higher fps.

Playnite is the first frontend not to make me cry.

The big problem I always had is that, because I use PS4 controllers I want to use DS4Windows to emulate Xbox controllers - but then various launchers (Launchbox/Steam/RetroArch) would start going mental and I'd be constantly configuring them.

I use ryochan7's fork of DS4 Windows as he's fixed exclusive mode. https://github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Windows

But this needs to be the first program that opens when you launch the controller. Steam cannot be running.

Playnite is fine with this.

I do have shortcuts though to switch between them.

PS Button Up -> Playnite
PS Button Down -> Steam Big Picture
PS Button Right -> Videos
etc

You could get good performance from an RTX 2060 Super even but that wouldn't be very future proof. The RXT 3070 would be an excellent candidate but it's still going to be +- $500 so not sure if that would fit your budget. You could also keep an eye on the second hand market, once the RTX 30xx cards are widely available, you might pick up something like an RTX 2080 Super for really low money. Or wait a bit longer until AMD release their RDNA 2 cards and see what that does to prices. It's an interesting time to build a new pc in any case.

I got a 2060 super last year and it's been a beast for me at 1440. Don't think I've played a game at full settings that I haven't got 80-100+ FPS on. The 2070 Super will probably be a better option now though, I assume it'll go down to 350-400 with the new cards out.

F*cking Nvidia - dropping 3080 FE stock on their website at 5.30am  They're just trolling at this point, but a fair few people were able to pick one up, which is good news I guess!

I don’t think Nvidia plan to release 3080ti unless they really have to, unless AMD’s big Navi does very well, which remains to be seen.

Rumours are that AMD's Big Navi might match/beat the RTX 3080. Not sure I buy that, will be interesting to find out.

Ordered one....

It was just sitting there from scans. I couldn’t help myself.

Tuf OC.

https://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/gpu-nvidia/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3090-graphics-cards

Had to give them a call, wait hour and made sure they got my post code as they didn’t have all my delivery details on order confirmation. Had the delivery date for 29th Sep when I ordered.
Very good. Tuf cards are meant to be good for 3000 series. I might just get the 3090 you know. There seems to be less interest in them and I may just bite the bullet as I was going to spend 900 on evga ftw3 card.

Go for it but some of the cards had 31st October and others just had preorder under them on Scan. When I ordered it did say 29th September, so I’d be annoyed if I was duped because I didn’t plan on getting one today.

Looking at some of the reviews the 3090 looks like a pointless expense for gaming, just like the RTX Titan. It's a workstation card. That said I spent €1300 on a 2080 Ti in January so I'm an idiot.

That’s definitely got to sting. You going to upgrade or just stick with it?

Just sticking with it, it's still a beast of a card. It'll be one or two generations after the 30xx before I look at a new card. I didn't anticipate this much of a drop in price for performance, that's for certain.

If I don’t get ps5 tonight I’ll order the 3090 at some point and wait until the dust settles with the PS5’s. Also, if they don’t have enchantments for last gen exclusives, I may just wait until some decent exclusives come out before getting one.

What res are you playing? Yeah it’s still a fantastic card - absolutely no doubt about it.
