Bought a 2080S from ebay as i would have been card less otherwise. 3000 series upgrade will have to wait to next year now.
 
Oh well, we all got a sucker punch and fell for it! :lol:

What was the point of a release date they were in no way prepared for?

If it's to beat Navi, that doesn't quite work when people on waiting lists will simply cancel their orders if they were inclined to do so based on what Navi performs like.

I've been fully charged for my OC order too, but I've not actually had a confirmation email. My order on their site says "Order received - not yet shipped' so I guess it's just a waiting game now.

Someone on Reddit has made a queue estimation calculator but I don't seem to have the correct order number to try it out? Hopefully things will become a little clearer this week!

 
EVGA claim to be shipping 1000s of cards to retailers this week. Not sure about the other manufacturers. So maybe theres some glimmer of hope? EU might have a hard getting a hold of enough cards to fulfill orders before the end of the year though.

Problem is, navi will probably be the same and it’s not being announced for another 5 weeks or so.
 
People running the same bots scalpers use to ruin their bids for stupid amounts. Other people posting pictures and drawings of 3080s to make finding stuff on eBay messy.

Why has the price increased on RTX 3080 GPUs?
There have been a lot of opinions around why we raised the price on certain brands of the RTX 3080. Pricing justification is not a common policy but we feel strongly about clarifying our position given the comments on various social media channels.

We try to do a lot for our customers by going over and above the norm to be the best at what we do. We don't get it right all the time and always look to learn and keep improving at a relentless pace to better our service levels.

Here are the facts to consider -
We had a quantity of graphics cards allocated at a given cost for launch, due to unprecedented demand, these cards sold out within minutes. Our GPU pricing team maintained the price until the volume sold exceeded our 6 week forecasted supply in.

This meant when sourcing new cards beyond our 6 week supply, the replacement costs were higher due to longer lead times and more uncertain supply chains given such high demand. We had no choice but to pass this cost on. Contrary to some comments, the price increase has not been made to take advantage of excessive demand.

To expand on this point there needs to be some context around the level of unprecedented demand on launch day -
• We've never had to take a product off sale before, due to demand being too high. RTX 3080 GPUs remain offline until we are certain on further supply and cost.
• We've never had our website max-out with traffic, as it did during the Ampere launch.
• We showed a fair price policy on launch, giving confidence to all those who were buying.
• We maintained our integrity in what we do, by only increasing prices where our costs had increased.
• We sympathise with those who are rightly annoyed.
• We also accept this won't change the minds of some, but at least it gives balance to a one-sided view.
• We're here to learn and do our best for you and will keep trying.

So I used that unofficial Overclockers queue calculator, and it reckons I'm around 280 in line. No idea if that's good or bad, but doubt I'll see the card I ordered before November.

And they have the nerve to take the money in full in fecking September.

I'd like to say I'm fuming, but at the same time I know I'm not cancelling my order, regardless.

Just a shocking way for OC to conduct themselves, though.

Totally agreed, but I won't be cancelling either. Better to wait in their queue when in all likelihood they'll get a bigger stock allocation than most other places, or join the end of another queue somewhere else.

They've also said that they're working on their own way to check where you are in line, and I'm hoping some people might cancel their orders and maybe go for the 3090 or 3070 next month instead.

They're taking a load of complaints over it but I'm kind of OK with it. For me there's two options available, one is to not have any pre-orders and you just have to time it lucky for when stock arrives (which could be months - i.e the way Nvidia are doing it) or take pre-orders and charge.

They have to charge otherwise everybody would place a pre-order on every site for every card and nobody would have any idea on how many to buy from suppliers and they would be buying cards which they may not sell based on millions of fake pre-orders. It's a bit annoying they've taken the money but OC can now go to suppliers with real orders.

Basically, people can choose the option they want. Spam F5 on Amazon until they eventually get stock or pre-order. The scan orders which are payment pending will have problems in the next week as there's rules on how long they can be kept pending by banks.
 
Yeah there is no right way to go about it, all said and done, but the disparity between payment and potentially receiving the item 2 months later - if not longer - is just crazy.

You're right about scan @Balljy but I think their method leaves less of our sour taste in the mouth given it'll be the permissible window they can hold funds for that forces movement.

Ultimately, this falls at Nvidia's feet for such a shocking lack of preparation. Announcing the date they did without being at all ready for it makes no sense to me. They've made themselves look far worse than needs be.

It will be interesting to see how the 3090 & 3070 releases go and if they're the same shambles as the 3080's was.
 
Yeah, it's not ideal and nobody is coming out of it looking particularly good. I wouldn't be surprised if it's early next year until you can login to a website and buy it immediately which will be awful by Nvidia if that happens.

The 3070 (and more-so the 3060 later) is going to be hilarious as that will be in the price range where they can expect many multiples of orders over and above the 3080. If it's anything like we've seen so far it's going to be a total mess.

Did put forth to @Bojan11 that I thought the price point of the 3090 should work as a bit of a deterrent to the massive overload all the sites saw for the 3080 (which he said makes no difference as per last generation scrambles), but you're right (imo), it should be theoretically worse with the 3070 because of the price point.

Wonder if AMD will come out of this smelling of roses just by simply having stock.

We shall see. But I’m expecting a small amount to be available and most of them will be taken by bots.

But yeah, Sony announced how the PS5 preorder wasn’t perfect. Wish Nvidia would actually take some responsibility and say next time we will improve it. Seems to happen every time.

At least Sony's was merely a botched time on release for pre-orders. Nvidia have said they were launching a product on a certain date they were in no way prepared for, which just seems to be far more conniving than Sony's downright incompetence.

I ordered new sofas not long ago and they tell you it can take up to 13 weeks to arrive. At least that way round, you know they're making the thing for you and know in advance what the process is. Feel like a proper mug with this card as I'm being taken for a similar ride without prior knowledge!

There's talk of these not coming in until November! November, ffs!

Ah, fair enough. I just talked to a local vendor today and am thinking of getting this build + 2 years onsite warranty and service for about ~150k INR:

Ryzen 7 3700X
RTX 3070 FE
Deepcool Gammax L240
B550 Auros Prox Ax
Corsair Vengeance 16gbx2 3200Mhz
Samsung 970 Evo 1TB - NVMe M.2
Corsair RM850x
MSI Forge 100R

You could argue the cooling is OTT if I'm not overclocking, but I wanted to be future-proof, just in case.
FPS Gaming, Minecraft, Deep Learning and the occasional Lightroom - I should be good for the next few years.

Edit: Dropping the PSU to 650W as well.
 
AMD's new Radeon RX 6900 XT should be powered by Navi 21 GPU, 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory bus, could cost $499.

The recent VRAM spec leak indicates that, at least on the video memory front, Big Navi GPUs will enjoy a considerable advantage over the GeForce RTX 3080. With 20GB variants of the GeForce RTX 3080 planned, however, this advantage could evaporate before Big Navi cards make it to market.

What we're looking forward to seeing now is concrete benchmarks at 4K. If the RX 6900XT can at least match the GeForce RTX 3080 in rasterized workloads, while costing less, it should make for a compelling high-end product

It’s looking like a very good proposition. I’ll be watching with a keen interest if not for just curiosity as I need to have a Gsync card. Unfortunately C9’s don’t support VRR or so I’m led to believe. If they did, I’d definitely be eagerly waiting on this.

Alas, it’s 3080 FTW3 Gaming Ultra for me, whenever I end up getting it — I don’t know. :lol:

Going back to Big Navi, it will be interesting what their answer to DLSS is and their pricing. If it’s 5-10% better than 3070 and is similarly priced at £450 then it will be extremely difficult to choose 3070 which has 8GB of memory. 3080 has a higher bandwidth and GDDR6X so essentially the 10GB vram shouldn’t be an issue in the short term but 8 is certainly not ideal in my humble opinion. Also healthy competition is good for us consumers as you well know.

Wait for Ryzen 7 4700x or even the Ryzen 5 4600x, its being announced on 5th october. Ive read that rtx 3000 series require a beefier psu than usual.

I prefer air cooling, most of the times its better at cooling. The only downside could be noise, on the flip side a water cooler has more parts and that means more chances of something malfunctioning.

For fps gaming go for a 24" 1080p 144/240hz ips monitor or if you want to future proof then 27" 1440p 144hz ips monitor.

That'll be OK for the 3070 but a PSU is the sort of thing that can last you 10+ years so for sake of £50 I'd go for around 850W. That'll take you to the RTX 4 series in a few years at a minimum. The 3080 has a suggested 750W already.
