Bryan Robson

He wasn't underrated by United fans, but, as a great hope for England, he got injured at just the wrong times, and the English felt let down.

Would be in my team before Keane, and I doubt I'm alone amongst the older ones.

Top footballer. Complete midfielder.

It's a shame his days were winding down as the Premier League and it's glamour came into play. That's probably why younger fans don't recognize him as a great.

Back in the 80s there was no one like Robbo who could have so much influence in a game. He singlehandedly used to take games by the scruff of the neck and drive us on. I'll never forget the FA cup semi final replay when we were losing 1:0 to Liverpool at half time. Robbo came out in the second half and just destroyed Liverpool. That goal when he ran for 30 yards with the Liverpool defenders hanging off him, and then hit a 30 yarder in the top corner. You just knew United were going to win after that. Also the 83 Cup Final replay, and the Barcelona fight back in 84. He was also awesome against Barca in the cup winners cup final in 92. Man of the match by a mile.

Absolutely. He was a force of nature in an average United side. If we had a young Robson now he'd probably win the league for us.

When I was in the newbies a couple of years back, I did a poll as to who people thought was better out of Robson and Keane.

Out of those old enough to have seen both, Robson just shaded it.

A brilliant player who gave so much that he often injured himself in the process. I remember when Atkinson signed him for 1.5m and he signed the contract on a table set up on the OT pitch - One of the biggest signings of the time.

You certainly wouldn't be alone but I don't agree. Both were outstanding midfield warriors and Robson probably had more quality when breaking into the box but Keane's ability to control a game through game intelligence was something Robson didn't have.

Robson carried a weak United team but Keane carried a great team.

Keane didn't carry anything.

It is a matter of shades when you're comparing the two. Keane's actions since leaving United have probably tainted the debate for good, unfortunately.
Yep.

Both brought unquestionable drive and determination that elevated the team and themselves above all. I might even go on to say that Keane's cuntishness was essential, along with Stam's in the football of late 90s. He was a cnut but he was our cnut.

There will be some of us who wont agree with that.

My boyhood hero, so I was made up when he finally got a league winners medal. I imagine with modern day diet, nutrition, and physios he'd be an absolute beast in today's game.

United and England became empty shells when he was out injured.
He was like the player version of Fergie in his will to win. That Fergie coped with his eventual decline, and that Keane took on the mantle, is a credit to all concerned.

My childhood hero. I think he was probably underrated on balance.

By whom?
For those old enough to have watched him, he will rank alongside Cantona as our greatest ever player, certainly during the years of Atkinson and SAF.

Atkinson said of Robson..."He is pure gold" We paid a record price for him....one of the best deals we ever made.

Then we got Keane....

When you talk of a two man midfield, one of the players has to be a ball winning player. But players like this are very difficult to find.

I'd have Keane over Robson tbh, but the Robson I watched was a Robson in decline.

Bryan Robson were a beast and together with Ronaldo the best player I´ve ever seen live in the MUFC-shirt. However I don´t agree that he played in a very average United-team. Bailey Duxbury/Gidman Moran/McQueen McGrath Albiston Coppell/Strachan Robbo Whiteside/Moses/Wilkins Olsen/Muhren Hughes Stapleton. I thought it was a brilliant team but they weren´t consistent enough (maybe down to the boozing at the time). They were a great watch though

Yeah have to a agree here. I honestly believe the United team in 1985 was the best team in the world, although Robson was a huge inclusion. I remember when Everton beat us 5:0, and then went on to win the league and the cup winners cup. They were probably better than any side in Italy, Germany, and Spain at the time, but I knew we could raise our game and beat them in the cup final.

I remember Jimmy hill commenting before the game, he said that if there's any team that could beat Everton, it's United. But bloody hell they were so inconsistent under Atkinson. The following season we won the first 10 games on the bounce (still a record for us I think), but Robbo got injured :(
SAF was installed as manager the following season.

I'm sure he's vastly underrated by United fans who never saw him play but those of us that were around in the 80s remember him carrying the team for a lot of years - he was the one who gelled everything together just like Eric did years later

The world "legend" is very over-used these days but he deserves the title

He was the best midfielder in Britain in the 80's, we'd have been a shambles without him and always suffered as a team when he was out injured (which unfortunately was quite a lot), when we won the title in 1993 I was so happy for Robbo who finally got his hands on the league trophy to end an illustrious career.

If we had Robbo on Saturday we would've won. That is, if Louis would've let him break shape to get forward. We know he dislikes Midfielders doing that.
