Bruno Fernandes | United not interested due to doubts over passing ability

Its interesting that the article says that two weeks ago Abola mentioned that they would first go for a defender and then complete deals for the two midfielders.

Thats exactly whats happening since Maguire is wrapped up now. Bruno has been done deal long ago i guess with player terms and terms with sporting well agreed!

Not necessarily.

That suggests there's a slot for him. Pogba sulks anyway and even if he stays it's going to be the same shit next summer. We can't be avoiding signing players to appease him, that would be madness.

Well yeah but not in the managers eyes otherwise why resign Mata. Makes little sense.

It's not just about appeasing him when he sulks he doesn't track back. Last season people excused it as the job of other players but if we have both Bruno and Pogba in the midfield we can't just excuse both of them and put it all on Matic.

In a diamond we have Lingard and Mata

And ? Its not like either have set the world on fire, I get it that Mata is a nice guy and the other one is well maramite really reading the threads, personally dont think either are what we need or would be here if AF was still boss.

and in a 433 we wouldn't be able to play both, Pogba will just sulk if we make him play the reserved deeper role all season.

Again, and ? Let him sulk and put in woeful performance, as people need to remember this guy was happy to sign a deal that still has 3 yrs and the carrot, Euro 20 as we seen with the WC, DD is not afraid to drop a name if not playing well or regularly.

Clubs need to take some power away from players and agents as its gone beyond a joke now, gimme x amount, oh by the way, might fancy leaving in a year or two, you have no choice, yeah right, is it the time now for clubs to sue players who breach a contract ? God damn you marc bosman as this is all you're fault.

Firstly its a squad game, people get injured and people take their places. Pogba is not going to start everygame. This whole nonsense of pogbas place takes should stop.

City play debruyne silva in midfield, you dont see them complain. The whole team has to adapt to the team tactics.

I for one am really excited to see Pogba and Bruno in midfield. Pogba primarily plays left mid and Bruno with play right mid, we will then have a DM doing the dirty work .It will finally bring balance to our teams biggest issue which is the over reliance on the left side of playmaking. With bruno bringing in goals and creativity it would now mean teams just cant double up on Pogba.

Agree with you post especially the parts in bold. But for this to happen would need a top class CDM like Fernandinho who can tackle exceptionally and is also good at passing. Which we don't have at the moment and I can't see us getting this window.

Mata is a good squad player and it made sense to re-sign him as he covers a couple of positions we currently don't have a lot of options in. I can see why we want him around.

Then Pogba should be dropped when he starts that crap. That's half the problem, he has too much power. Having another creator like Bruno helps take some of that power away. Honestly we can't be building the team around him in any fashion.

I think Mctominay could do that role. We tried Pereira but he's not good enough defensively.

Scott has shown he's sharp and aggressive enough to snuff out danger, but also really improving on his passing skills.

He doesn't have to hit 60 yard balls regularly, just keep feeding the other midfielders and wingers/fullbacks.

He is, but I can't see him in that role for United on a regular basis.

However, I do think Pogba in a free role (left) can work well enough provided he's surrounded by the right players. Bruno, from what I've seen, isn't likely to get in Pogba's way (unlike Sanchez - that was always a clusterfeck) but rather be an additional source of creativity, and a goal threat to boot. Sort out the rest of the midfield (easier said than done, of course, not least given our current options) - and I see Pogba/Bruno complementing each other fairly well.

Against top opposition, Pogba can sit back in a two, playing a more disciplined game - as you say, he is capable of this when he's arsed.

He has already played in that role for United on a regular basis.

If you want to give Pogba a relatively free left-sided role I’m not sure Bruno is a great compliment. By all accounts he’s a natural no.10 so I feel like that would be setting him up to fail. Play him in his natural role, and use Pogba in (the other) one of the two roles he can play to a high level. If anything, bringing in a creative final third player of high quality would be freeing for Pogba - it would simplify things for him. And let’s be honest, we won’t find a player for that role better than Pogba.

I can't believe this is still one of the most active threads, with some even thinking we have an agreement in place and that we're holding off announcing for some reason to do with Sporting needing to put replacement deals in place beforehand. Firstly, why would we give two fecks about Sporting (is Ed really going to keep taking shit to do the president of SCP a break???) and what difference would it make to them? Portugese teams regularly flog their best players for fortunes and nobody charges them more to replace. They do not need to sort incomings prior to "allowing" Bruno Fernandes to join us.

You can all save yourselves some drama and disappointment and move on. I for one am not looking forward to listening to half of you whinge for most of next season because we didn't manage to complete a deal for a player we were never interested in and, who in all likelihood isn't as good as most on here seem to think he is.

TLDR: Its not happening and, in the extremely unlikely event that it does, I'll predict he'll be no better than Fred.

Not sure about McTominay being able to do it but would hope you are right and would happy if this could happen. If we have Bruno and Pogba it could worth trying it out to see how it goes for a while as have nothing to lose mate. I think McTominay will have a bigger part this season as Ole seems to like him, as he carries out what he tells him to do exactly which is what any manager needs as it breeds trust and enhances their relationship.

@Vault Dweller is this the main thread after De Ligt saga is over?

Just need to know which basket to put my eggs.

I think he is absolutely made for us and could play in the same midfield as Pogba without them getting on top of each other as other posters on here have constantly mentioned.

Bruno tip of the diamond.
Pogba cm left.
Fred/Mctominay holding.
New midfielder (Mctominay) cm right

Against teams that sit back against us, a 433 with him and Pogba in front of a holding midfielder.

The fact that it is quiet on this potential move is a strange one. Why are no other clubs moving on him? If we are going for him, and it is slow then I think it is because we are haggling the price. This move will happen in my opinion. It's a matter of time.

I think so my man. I have been trying to weigh up which thread is next myself, if there was potentially another but I do think this is it

Maguire might be more important, but not very sexy transfer.

Earlier in the season Neveille said that ole wants to play a 4-2-2-2 like how watford play. If this is the case we dont need the DM, but will play with two double pivots who would share the defensive and play making burden. It would look something like this

rash martial
pog bruno
fred mctom

Maybe that could be the reason we are interested in Longstaff. He will certainly need a few years to grow into that role but I hope we can make do with Fred till then.

Half-regular, I'd say. And he's been largely underwhelming.

For France he has played a more "subdued" role, and done well, but not for United. Playing a simpler, more disciplined game in a team that features several world class attackers is very different from doing so in a pivot behind an unproven at the highest level AM (Bruno), and any combination of forwards who all have question marks over their heads.

If Pogba develops his game further as a more conventional CM - then yes, by all means, he'd be a great choice for the role on a permanent basis. I don't see that easily, though: I don't see him shining properly, pulling up trees, in a run-of-the-mill CM capacity. Not over the course of a season in this United team.

With regard to the other point, I don't think Pogba in the free-ish role I refer to would clash with a creative AM - Pogba isn't a typical show-running playmaker, his strengths lie elsewhere: his brand of creativity is more unpredictable, ideally suited to serve as icing on the cake in a team that has someone else as the main, stable creative outlet. That player can be a deeper midfielder (like Pirlo at Juventus) - or an AM/No 10 type.

Could well be mate. Hopefully if we do get Longstaff that it progresses that way. I think Fred needs a big season, he has had his time to adjust now. Time to start playing well consistently or in my opinion he can go next summer.

It would be strange for Ole to focus exclusively on English players so far and, mysteriously, be interested in some Portuguese guy who's never played in the Premier League.

I would like to know from the people that say we're not into him: which midfielder are we after then? Longstaff and no one else?

I think we are after Maguire and then we will review. Clearly we want one or two midfielders but Maguire has been identified as the priority and we won't show our hand on other signings until the final fee is settled with Leicester. I think that unlike the CB situation where we have one main target I believe we are open to several different midfield options depending on what is left in the kitty. It is notable that we did seem to be genuinely interested in Tielemans but wanted him to wait for us to decide if we were going to bid.

With regards to who exactly we are after. It would appear that whilst we have some interest in a number of MF options there is a pretty good chance that we will not sign anyone in this window, particularly if Pogba stays, partly in the hope I think that we will sneak back into the top 4 and we can try and rebuild the midfield next summer with the offer of CL football to secure our preferred targets. Seems as though the club feels that Matic can bounce back if his playing time is managed better and that Scott, Fred and Andreas are expected to step up this year with the academy boys getting game time in the Carabao and Europa.

I don't think we'll have much choice if we don't sign a DM. He could be fantastic there if he keeps his progress going.

We have Fred and Mctom. And apparently Longstaff is on our radar who has the potential to be a good DM with passing range. So we could try to develop mids for this role if we want to.

Seems that Ed is not a multi-tasker!

Only one transfer at a time for him.

Right on top of the action, as always. Thanks Geoff

Why even come in to the Transfer Speculation forum? Or do you just like moaning?

Anyway topic of discussion Mail claiming he is valued at 90mil. What the hell is going on in the world of transfer fees.

Well now it looks like Pogba is staying we will see if signing Fernandes was reliant on him leaving

I think there could be, based on Ole trying Pogba in a deeper position against Perth. Only pre-season, but if Pogba plays deeper, it means we can add more creativity to our team by bringing in a creative number 10 like Fernandes.

it's not though

We're going to announce Maguire and Bruno on the same day. I've got a feeling in my heartgut bones. Before the announcement the stock will be overbought and then oversold soon after.
