If this deal goes through, I will at least have massive scope to be impressed and pleasantly surprised by the player, which would be something to look forward to.

Well Castles has the same story and despite being generally useless he pretty much is a mouthpiece for Mendes. Considering the difference I imagine we will likely get this done until the end of the window, just not any time soon.

I am not gonna lie the fact that Mendes's mouthpiece is reporting the same as that Portuguese source is worrying.

Just hope we don't hear anything negative tomorrow from the usual reliable sources like Stone.

Have I missed something here btw? Why does what Paolo Futre says matter?
Futre was a product of the SCP youth system who he joined as a 9 year old. Abit like Gary Neville making a statement on United.

I’m aware he is an ex-player, but I watch enough of ours on MUTV to see how utterly clueless they are, about football in general, let alone United. If you listen to the likes of May and Macari talk about football or transfers specifically, they sound like some of the most rubbish posts on the caf to me.

That said, if Futre spoke definitively then perhaps he knows what he’s talking about.

The difference is that ex SCP player Hugo Viana is the DoF at the club and Futre does seem to have a good relationship with him. So it's plausible to think the info is fed to Futre by Viana.

Yea that’s true.

Sounds like a face-saving thing from Sporting to their fans: "oh we tried out best to hold on to Bruno and even fought for him to play in the derby, but he pushed to leave before then."

As what some here have said: as much as staying to play in the derby might make sense emtionally, but logically, the risk of getting injured and ruining the move might be too high. I wonder how the Sporting fans would react if he leaves before the derby though....

The other stupid thing about Sporting wanting him to play vs benfica is that Bruno won’t play anywhere close to full throttle and will avoid any tackle or challenge to avoid injury.

His head will be somewhere totally elsewhere so it makes zero sense from anyone’s POV to play that game. And that’s even before one accounts for the financial risk, if he gets injured.

Reading that for the add-ons in the supposed proposal to come to fruition, we'd have to win the league and the CL. Surely that stopped being plausible a few years ago

Not even taking into account that Sporting are 16 points behind Benfica... It's like us saying we will risk Pogba against the dippers before his 300m move to PSG on Monday.

The only way that he plays against Benfica is that he himself said so that he wants to play and say farewell to the fans. Not sure how if it work out if his performance is not up his usual standard or if Sporting lose the game though.

Based on the points gap seems like Sporting likely to lose.

You’re not wrong at all. We do need at least one deeper lying CM, maybe 2, especially if Pogba leaves but for the life of me I can’t see why we shouldn’t make a move and get this guy in as a 10.

We’ve been struggling for 2 full seasons, maybe more simply because we don’t have that creative attacking midfielder. This guy has all the skills we currently lack in that position.

So yes, we still need at least one other CM but why should that mean Bruno doesn’t fit? It just means we still have a hole that needs filling.

I didn't mean he won't fit, just that we're all over the place in midfield. At gunpoint I'd say we might as well go 4-4-2 since our attackers are better long-term bets than our midfielders and I'm not sure we have an obvious RW:

----------Rashford---------Martial-------------- (Greenwood)
James-------------------------------------------RM (Gomes/Chong and another AM/W type)
--------------Fred----------CM---------------------- (McTominay)

might make more sense than signing a pure #10 depending on who our manager is and how they see our front 4. Someone might come and think James is a quality starter at LW but not good enough at RW (hardly a crazy take based on what we've seen) or that Greenwood and Martial are both starting quality types but need to be uptop and we should find a backup for them and play Rashford and James out wide, or that Greenwood should play out wide for the next few years and James is best used against tired legs, or he could hate Martial for his weaknesses.

We need good players in the front 6 regardless of quality basically everywhere apart from LW. I would agree we need at least one quality #10 type, whether that's Pogba or Bruno we'll see. Obviously we don't have enough creativity and passing from our midfield at the moment.

Back on topic, I'm a bit worried about the profile of a non-special athlete known for long shooting and mobility, but I'm basing this more on 2-3 games for Portugal which is hardly fair so I'll defer to people who watch Sporting. If he can grab 10-12 goals and 6-8 assists from the league most years and be average in midfield as a #8/10 Tielemans sort of type that would certainly represent an upgrade for us, even if it's not going to get us back in the title race.

Why is that different from any other signing? I mean there's also always a scope for disappointment (hopefully not the case).

He may be full of it and completely guessing, but this one doesn't sound too far off the mark. I don't see any of our players going the other way, except maybe Rojo if he could somehow be convinced or Fener pull out. Pereira doesn't make sense because he's already established himself as a first team player, and personally I was hoping Gomes would go but it's probably too big of a risk for them as they would need experienced players to fill the void.

Sorry i meant my post about Jarrod Bowen in the Twitter Transfer thread was deleted because my Twitter post had The Sun as source.

But this guy is terrible....he said in the past that Garay & Gaitan are 100% confirmed as transfer deals

And now this

Garay and Gaitan were done deals according to every outlet in Portugal tbf.

I also feel The Sun has a few decent journos that do have sources and shouldn't be discarded straight away. Personally i'd revamp the banned list and go by a list of journo names rather than the outlet they work for. It would filter out alot of the crap we're currently seeing.

I've not got the right ingredients for my planned dinner tonight, I'm very stressed, not sure I'll have time to go shopping today either.

Oh you meant Bruno didn't you, no clue.

I suspect he will be pulled from the squad at the last moment, that way if they lose to Benfica they can say "what did you expect we lost our best player".

It won't have gone this far to suddenly fall apart over a few quid.

If he doesn't play - he is ours without a doubt - either Sporting agrees to not letting him play because of the transfer (doubtful) - or he has said no himself in which case there is no going back. If he decides not to play THAT game, there is no going back

If he does play - he is probably ours, but then it could still go wrong
