Aah miss the days we quietly got our transfer business done with Portugal clubs. (Ronaldo, Nani, Ando etc)

Problem is that Sporting and Portuguese football in general is so tied up in dodgy deals with agents that they make relatively little on the transfer so they need a daft fee.

The reported wages of £150k a week seem pretty reasonable in the current market.

Why couldn't we have fekked this up in December?
At least then we would have had more time to feck up other transfers. :(

The fact that ducker, stone etc have confirmed we’re in talks confirms that we’re in for him (unlike the summer when it was all coming from overseas journos and being denied by British).

The fact that we’re in for him means we clearly want him, it’s jus negotiations now. And they’re not going to spend an extra £13m because there is some impatient members of the caf..

Especially with young going and freeing up wages, I’m very confident that this will get done next week. I do think he’ll play tonight though

If the reports are true that he has asked not to be involved against Benfica tonight, then that is huge!

Interesting to see what happens tonight.

I'm relaxed on the situation. Sporting are about to play their biggest rival and also to lose their best player - they are simply saving face and trying to show their fans they tried their hardest to keep Bruno.

I expect this to be announced on the weekend. I think we'll meet their valuation in general and perhaps already have.

I've not got the right ingredients for my planned dinner tonight, I'm very stressed, not sure I'll have time to go shopping today either.

Oh you meant Bruno didn't you, no clue.
It’s Friday mate, get on it and get a dirty kebab to end things off

Futre was a product of the SCP youth system who he joined as a 9 year old. Abit like Gary Neville making a statement on United.

A bit more like Evra making a statement on United than Gary Neville tbh

He’ll play. The coach confirmed it yesterday in the press conference

Joke’s on you, we’ve already imploded

It's a shame the situation of the club is so bad at the moment. Feel for you as a fan - whilst we moan a lot here at least we are so rich we can keep throwing money at the problem to somehow stay relevant.

How did it get so bad for Sporting and do you see it changing any time in the medium term?

I think both clubs are dragging this out.

Sporting to look like they tried their hardest to get the most money for him.

And Woody will be delaying the announcement until after the Liverpool game to distract from (what's likely to be) a loss.

I reckon we'll get the completion of the transfer Sunday night, and then all the official United announcements Monday morning.

Why is that different from any other signing? I mean there's also always a scope for disappointment (hopefully not the case).

It is obviously a matter of level of expectation. I wouldn’t sign Fernandes at all if given the chance, and don’t expect him to translate anything like what he does in Portugal here. If he does, I’d be massively and pleasantly surprised, and if he doesn’t, then my personal investment in terms of expectation is already low.

And apologies for using the word ‘obviously’, which is probably the rudest word in the English Language!

This is a signing we need simply because our midfield is so low on quality numbers, as is now being exposed by a couple of key injuries.

I don't think it's a signing that addresses the key weakness in our 'attacking midfield', which is how to be creative from a standing start, against well-drilled, organised line-ups sitting back and defending. Watching his highlight reels, I have yet to see a single clip of creative midfield play from him that doesn't come in a transition, or on the break, when the opposition are all over the place and Sporting are flooding forwards. United are already really good at this, it's probably our strongest area under Solskjaer. Our key dropped points this season have come against smaller teams who sit back and defend, and I can't see much evidence that Fernandes is the sort of schemer to pick apart a defensive block like that.

He would hopefully address a lesser concern by providing more goals from midfield, so that's definitely big plus.

And obviously this isn't about not wanting to buy him - we must buy him, and its frankly ridiculous that we haven't got it done at this stage in the window. But our two big midfield holes will still need addressing in the summer regardless of his acquisition: a creative schemer who can orchestrate attacks and create chances against a sitting defence, and a proper, no-ifs-no-buts defensive midfielder to replace Matic.

I have zero worries. He'll sign and be announced sometime next week after this final round of haggling wraps up by Monday or Tuesday.

I'll also be glad if Andreas doesn't go the other way on loan. He's not good enough to be a long term option for United, but is needed for depth in the current squad.

Yeah but that 16m is money Sporting get and then decide/are forced to use it elsewhere. The 16m is a cost Sporting need to spend regardless.
So it’s a little misleading that, the 16m should be included in the Sporting money.

Good point. Strange breakdown. Sporting get around €51 M on their hands and will spend however they want. The fact that they MUST spend €16 M to restructure the debt has nothing to do with the estimation of their share in transfer money.

I know nothing about Portuguese media, but seems like 1) A Bola is a tabloid, 2) it’s Trendy to kick Sporting management in Portugal. The latter is similar to how United management is pictured in British media.

Hope the reports he's refusing to play are true. Playing is too much of a risk for all parties involved... surprised Sporting are even entertaining the idea given they're skint. Stinks of negotiation tactics.

You mean our market, right? Or to be correct, our wage policy, because f. e. Mahrez or Mané are suposed to have only 120k a week. Kante is suposed to be 150k a week or Willian only with 120k per week. And those are proven players from Premier League, some of them players of the year with PL titles.

So, no, I dont agree and this is one of our biggest problems. Average or not even average players like Lingard, Jones, Rojo, Lindelof, Young or Fred are over 100k a week, so we cant sell them for normal money, they have no reason to leave the club with those contracts and if we want to bring or keep some better players, we need to throw at them a lot of money, because they know how much money we pay to average players above. So we are in a circle of death and if we dont change this, it will eventually hunt us down in the future.

Btw I remember some time we (as United fans) called out other clubs because better players chose them only because of they overpaid them - like Chelsea, ManCity, PSG, used to be Real or even before that some italian clubs. Time flies, doesnt it?

Yeah but they're clubs that are being ran properly by football people and are on an upward trajectory.

Its just showing what they'd be left with and goes some way to explaining why they are pushing for the 65 or 70m.
That is unrelated to the fee. You might as well add yearly wages for players into that too. There's no difference.

Riyad Mahrez, a Manchester City winger who reportedly earns £200,000 a week

Mane signed contract in 2018, earns around 150K per week.

Liverpool's total wage in 2017-18 season was 264 million, do you think they are paying their star players 100K per week?

Kante is ready to hand Chelsea a significant boost by signing a new Chelsea contract worth around £300,000-a-week.

We're forced to use our financial strength in transfer negotiations due to our weakened position on the pitch. That other clubs take full advantage of that fact should come as no surprise to anyone. It doesn't help that Ed Woodward brags about it in the press either.

From the resources I can find Mahrez is supposed to be on £200k a week and Mane £150k with talks to raise him to £220k a week.

The situation in Italy is also contributing to further wage inflation with the De Ligt's and Ramsey's contracts reported to be worth up to £400k a week.

So no new news regarding him? Have the Portuguese papers did a blinder again and convinced us he's joining like when he was signing for us in the summer?

I do hope he signs and hopefully he won't be injured tonight against Benfica either

I think the latest news is that we have agreed with Bruno for contract term about 150k I believe. But we haven't reach an agreement with the fees. Sporting wants 65m pounds while we prefer 50m pounds. I think we should be able to wrap this one up end of this week with 60m pounds. If not, there is only one person to blame and I the fans can finally understand why we are doing so bad in transfer recently.

If we end up paying 60M people will end up saying we overpaid and say Woodward is terrible at doing business..
