Sporting need to sell, Utd know this. Utd need to buy, Sporting know this. The issue that seems to be holding up depending on what you read is that Mendes is due a fee even though he's not involved in this deal. Sporting want to recoup that fee from Utd, utd don't want to pay and nor they should. This is why the price went up. Re other options, it's Jan, clubs don't want to sell. To be honest I think this lad is our option, I don't think he is/was 1st choice. I think our lack of cover in mid if forcing our hand here. If we had come into Jan on a good run, I think we would have held of until summer and went for Maddison or Grealish. I feel a deal if done in Jan will go right to the wire.
