Bring back Rooney

Well I think one of the two you've mentioned is the option but I agree Rooney will play.

I just disagree with those who think it's on merit.
Agree, our hopes are based on two young inexperienced and two ageing forwards. As limited as Ibra is in our system, if he was to be injured we would really struggle to score.

If by some miracle we could get a dead cat bounce out of Rooney for a few weeks I would take it.

Talk about missing the point completely and going off on a tangent.

No one said he's not been criticised on the forum. The point is about the part in bold.

Without explaining much, ask yourself if people here had 2 options- Rooney plays every game from now till the end of season and United win the title or Rooney fecks off to China and we win nothing. Do you think there's even 1 person here who'd pick option 2? That should tell you who's talking shit here.
Maybe he didn't word himself well but there genuinely are people who might be happier with Rooney not contributing even if it meant it helped the team. There were lots in the Rooney thread on Thursday who were annoyed he scored that goal because it meant he'd get more games. He did play the very next game and played a crucial role in it. Not saying posters will definitely not want him to do well here but there is that nagging feeling that they'd be happy seeing him fail so he can be sold. Anyway he's not going anywhere because the manager clearly has a lot of faith in him and his abilities.

I knew this thread would pop up. I have no problem with Rooney in a supporting role but comparing him with Zlatan is a joke. Zlatan is immensely skillful, His touch, passes, strength and vision are extremely impressive. Give him some more time to gain an understanding with his teammates and he will destroy opponents. In no way is his age showing, the only thing I would experiment with is him playing behind Rashford. Rashford is no winger and is deadly in front of goal while Zlatan is extremely creative.
Rooney is a good sub but the longer he is on the field the more he will give away the ball and ruin our fluidity.

I would like to see rashford giving that run has a number 9, since he is one of our few forwards who can get inbehind defenses, and can stretch the game from the center.

Not trying to be pessimistic but I was thinking the win was 75% down to Swansea being pants and trying not to be too excited about any player. Then there comes this thread

To be fair to Rooney, he had a good game against Swansea. He still has a first touch like a man with breezeblock feet and his passing was still a bit off at times but on the whole, he did alright. Played an intelligent game and contributed well.

If (big if) he managed to keep playing that way, I see no reason why he shouldn't play more. Not all the time but given decent game time.

I say this as someone who would have happily let him go on a free, last week.

I'd say 90%, Shearer hit the nail on the head with his analysis of Swanseas performance. Literally no fecks were given. It was easily the most gutless performance of the season by any team. To be fair most of the cafe seemed to realise it but it's Rooney, his fans will always be lurking, ready to pounce and do his PR.

No, I want zlatan as close to the goal as possible. Rashford a terrific young player but no way will he score as many as zlatan at number 9.

The word leadership is such a crutch, I look at teams like Spurs, Liverpool and City and don't see any specific leaders, any huge personalities that drag the team through, instead they just have young, hungry players all pulling in the same direction.

I think this is exactly right.

I'm not sure why OP is looking to Rooney for passion and leadership when he's shown some of the most sluggish play for the past year, notably at the Euros and start of this season as well. If you're talking about passion in front of the press "I have nothing to prove", "most people say rubbish".. yeah sure.

On field passion though, Herrera, Mata, De Gea, Bailly, Rashford and Lingard all have a lot more to give. Even second tier passion players like Ibrahimovic and Pogba are far better than what Rooney has given.

To be fair, Rooney is looking better these few games.

It turns out, he was resting on his ass all along. He needed a big kick up his hairy ass to know he can't take anything for granted.

Long may his ass be kicked.

Unless rashford is given a run we will never know, you pointed out he is a terrific young player, while he is 34/35. Even the worlds best players of today were not outscoring experienced strikers when they were 19 years old

He's a terrific young player. He's not at zlatans level yet if he ever will be.

Rooney needs to be kept challenged. As soon as he feels comfortable and untouchable he will be back to his same old shite.

He deserves to start the next game (and will anyway coz of ibras ban) but if he doesn't atleast play well he will be back on the bench.

JUST LIKE ANY PLAYER SHOULD.

If he scores or assists against Arsenal then I'm sure anybody will be happy for him to continue. The thing that was pleasing was his performance was actually good too, not just chipping in.
I agree with this 100% Mourinho has managed him well, he first gave him chances to show himself what he was worth and it didn't work so he benched. Now he is using him intelligently because other players aren't performing well. Rooney has hopefully realized that he is another normal player.

This. Makes you wonder if Van Gaal hadn't been so damn stubborn and managed him better if things could have gone differently last year

He'll probably get a start v Arsenal with Zlatan out whether we like it or not

Up to him to perform

It's no coincidence we saw the fittest looking Rooney in ages against Swansea, he's clearly been working hard to get back into the team.

Maybe he isn't ACTUALLY finished, but he was so out of shape it seemed that way? guess we will find out soon.

He will start against Arsenal and will probably be all blood and thunder running around without really contributing. Its one thing to play a poor Swansea, but will be found out against Arsenal. Saying that he will probably take a swing, come off his shin and straight to whoever to tap in. then he will be marked as having another assist. Rooney was a great player for us yesteryear, but players shouldnt be picked on past reputation.
