Remember the good old days when Rooney played and we used to win matches? And the only thing we needed to do to dominate the world of football was to drop him. What happened to that plan?

He might not be perfect but at least he shows some passion and leadership. Bring Wayne back!!!!

Wayne has been playing and putting in equal dismissal performances.

He only played he other night in Europe, and part played against Liverpool. Cant think of anything stand out that he did.

Seems like he has been waiting for about a year to grab 2-3 goals to equal Charltons record!

I actually think he should start on Wednesday but really only because Ibra's been so bad in his last two outings. I've kind of given up hope of Rooney every being good enough to be a regular starter in a team good enough to nail down a top four slot.

It is interesting, though. This widespread idea that dropping Rooney would unleash a feast of fluent attacking football. How's that working out? Everyone was cock-a-hoop when we put four past Leicester but let's not forget how many we scored from corners. That particular goalfest aside we've looked just as blunted in attack as we ever were with Rooney in the team.

Pure and simple, we need a new striker. Rashford has tons of promise, but it's still asking a lot for him to shoulder the burden (unless we decide to put Martial up front, but my impression is that he's more suited to coming in from the left.) Ibra has been incredibly disappointing of late, no better than Rooney. It seems pointless bringing it up now, but I still kind of wish we had Hernandez.

We should play Rashford or Martial upfront

Thing is, where will he play?

Offers less than Mata.
Can't play midfield, no those one dimensional balls to Valencia aren't impressive.
Up front? He drops deep just like Ibra, never runs in behind either and has an awful touch.
Martial / Rashford more deserving of a chance upfront than Rooney.

It's a bigger problem than just dropping Rooney,
or dropping fellani.
Or blind
or Smalling.

Fans are fickle and love a good 'scapegoat'

I've seen so many comments of, 'need to sell these dozen players'
Apparently to be successful United need 24 World class players.
Maybe then we'll make 4th.

We've replaced one has been geriatric with another. Not to mention there are other flaws within the team but the issue up front is clear as day.

He hasn't helped for 3 years. Put Ibra on the bench and play Martial and/or R Ashford. Let's not keep going back to what does not work.

Should have started 'Bring back Martial' or 'Play Rashford as striker' thread instead.

Bring back Spangles.

fecking hell. As if Rooney would make a positive difference at this point. Where would he play? He wouldn't do any better than Ibra up front.

Bring back Wes Brown I say, we won stuff when he was around.

We were awful with Rooney and did have 2 good performances without him as Ibra put in performances against Leicester and Stoke Rooney couldn't get near these days, the bottom line though is that we need a new striker, we lack dynamism, movement and workrate up top and people calling for Rashford I think are overestimenting where the kid's development is at.

5 points from 6 league games will do that to people.

Yup we have been shite and believe me, I'm extremely frustrated with everything related to the club. But why the actual feck would we bring back Rooney? Honestly can you make a good argument for this or is this merely an attention seeking thread?

absolutely not true. we looked terrific against Stoke aswel. After that we've had games against Liverpool and Chelsea where out tactics were to destroy rather than attack

I'm gonna make a "bring back Beckham" and a "bring back Robson" thread, as they are about as relevant as he is anymore.

Think he offers some leadership and drive which is sorely lacking in what we've seen recently.

I like Rooney but this is hilarious. The collective intelligence of Redcafe just went down a couple of notches.

Not a hope. He hasn't displayed any of those characteristics in a long time and he offers absolutely nothing footballing wise. Smalling is a joke of a captain but Rooney was hardly displaying any great leadership qualities over the past few years.

It's actually funny, but since that Leicester game United failed to score without Rooney on the pitch for like what, 4 games already. Well at least 3 and a half in terms of minutes.

Our attack flowed much better with Rooney against Fenerbache at number 9 than it has all season with Ibra. Remember three of the fours goals against Leicester were corners which is kind of a freak occurrence. anyway. I thought Rooney transitioned attacking plays quite quickly in his last outing.

The problem with this is that while he may be a good leader he takes up a useful spot on the pitch that could be better utilized by someone who produces results. Granted, we haven't fulfilled that spot yet but step one is making the spot vacant. I firmly believe that we should be lining up with a MF pair of Herrera/Pogba with Mata as the #10, not Herrera/Fellaini with Pogba as the #10. Jose seems to be giving Fellaini too much credit for physical attributes over technical attributes. I think yesterday may have let him see the light.

Collectively the entire team was poor against Chelsea starting at the back. Smalling, Blind, and DDG should share the blame for the first goal. That goal rattled our team and we never recovered. Rooney would not have changed anything and more than likely would have lost his head and been sent off. Of course, we'll never know.

Pah! Captain Birdseye has more leadership qualities than Wages Rooney!

Jeez this place is all over the shop. To the people talking about leadership and what have you, are you saying if you're losing Rooney will be vocal and urge the team to fix up? That if you're not playing well he will inspire the team?
That he may lead from the front and drag you to a win?

Because quite frankly I find that hilarious. He hasn't done that for donkeys years. And this isnt me having a dig, Gerrard in his latter stages lost his "desire" so to speak. You wouldn't find him roaring the crowd on like when he scored the goal in the 05 CL final.

Rooney doesn't do that anymore. This thread is simply a panic thread in response to the loss.
"Ahh! We lost 4-0, quick do something! I know Rooney."

Rooney is a leader and makes sure he is always the worst man on the pitch which automatically would have made Mike a better defender.

I really don't understand how any one in 2016, can suggest we play with either Rooney or Zlatan when we have the likes of Martial and Rashford in the squad. Just baffling.

Could have used him in the Ronaldo role. Coached Smalling from the sidelines to not make those mistakes.

To be honest I'm not really surprised we are a bit all over the shop, kind of reflects the team. Plus you guys have certainly been there in your forums....especially when Roy was in charge!!

The word leadership is such a crutch, I look at teams like Spurs, Liverpool and City and don't see any specific leaders, any huge personalities that drag the team through, instead they just have young, hungry players all pulling in the same direction.
