Meanwhile in Boston, Liverpool's owners release a statement backing Our Brendan:

Childhood flashback...no wonder I like guns so much!

You must be sick of this subject Duffer , but i can tell you now - you'll never win the argument mate. Chelsea & City will never be respected by rival fans in the same way United, Pool & Arsenal etc. are. You bought success & that's the stick rival fans will beat you with & they're right too aswell.

Chelsea changed the course of what clubs will pay in transfer fee's / wages, and in doing so ruined the landscape for the worse. Their oil money was the only reason they became an attractive proposition for top players & no-one could compete, or were willing to compete with that kind of spending - us included.

Chelsea might be popular in Africa because of some of the African players you've had over the last 10 years, but those fans will always be plastic & in many cases, will shift allegiance from season to season depending on which team is shit-hot right now. Many follow the player & not the club also.

Liverpool have way more of a following worldwide than Chelsea - its laughable & naive to think differently!
So any fan that's not in England is plastic? Man United have hundreds of millions of foreign fans who started following them solely because of their success. That means they're glory hunters, right? So United therefore have more "plastic" fans than any club on earth.

I don't think anyone denies that a club gains supporters by being successful, but I think the point some are trying to make is that it matters how that success was achieved.

Me, I don't care much.

Yes. Don't you have a football league in your own country? I don't give two fecks about MLS, NBA, NFL, NHL teams here in the US. If you love footy you should be supporting it in your own country instead of latching onto whichever team was the most successful when you started seeing it on the telly.

Ridiculous, Grinner.

Should non American's get criticized for liking American TV shows? American products?

Why would I want to watch/support an inferior product like MLS when I can watch top level lay instead? That's like watching the WNBA instead of the NBA.

I'm probably going to regret this but did Liverpool, and BR really do that badly last season?

5th / 6th is about right for a club with their income and budget, they played some pretty stuff, and ultimately given the fact their squad wasn't that deep they got found out late on, was that quite the disaster some people are making out I'm not so sure myself.

Realistically unless there is an almighty feck up they are not going to break the top 4 again any time soon especially with their wage cap, like I say fighting Spurs for 5th/6th is where they're at atm and I think it's pretty harsh to expect BR to break the top 4 next season unless their set up changes.

Doesn't compare. English football clubs have a unique culture and personality as do many American sports teams. Fair enough you can like them, but to claim to be part of it if you don't go to matches and understand what it's really about is just fecking weird. As evidenced by your utter ignorance about Liverpool and Chelsea history.

I don't go to many matches for my local sports teams either but I'm not a plastic fan. I bet the majority of people here don't go to every match and that doesn't make them any less of a supporter.

So then say Chelsea is a hated or vilified club. Hell, call us plastic until your hearts content.

We aren't a small club, though, for all of the reasons I listed above. Club loyalty and tribalism aside, it's impossible to argue otherwise.

We were having the stretford end redeveloped at the time and still managed to fill the ground, you on the other hand.....
You will always be a small club with money in the eyes on many i'm afraid..

the league position is fairly normal due to all teams being fairly poor bar Chelsea this year. its more to do with the tactics, man management, CL embarrassment and of course terrible signings showing an alarming lack of sensible judgement. woeful right across the board

It is all relative. You come second in the league, you spend over 100M and you expect to be challenging for the top.

Many on here accepted that Liverpool played well the season before, sure they had their good fortune with a number of penalties, but they did play well. However, it was also recognized that they played above themselves, as most teams do when they have self belief and confidence through a long winning run. Those 50-50 balls always seem to drop to you, the shots that normally hit the stands all of a sudden hit the top corner, the refs give you the benefit of doubt. We have seen it with all teams in the same position.

I actually thought they were dreadful this year. We did not do too well either. Everton and Spurs also did not do well. So coming in the 4-8 positions is just a reflection of how much competition is in the league and not really a reflection of thier budget or squad depth. BR made some serious errors in tactics and purchases.

Last year he definitely benefited from everyone else being crap and Suarez being unstoppable. But it was BR who blew the big game at Chelsea and didn't steady them at Crystal Palace. Was that inexperience or ineptitude....I think a bit of both. Liverpool should stick with him and let him see if he can learn from it over the next few years.

Funny how it's always bitter Liverpool and Arsenal fans who call Chelsea a small club. The two clubs that are hurt most by Chelsea's success.

Using the size of our stadium to argue we're a small club? Anfield seats a mere 4000 more than the Bridge currently.

Win and compete for the biggest honors, world class manager, squad with numerous world class players, able to sign and keep world class players (unlike Liverpool) established as a top Euopean club, in the CL every season, some of the most lucrative sponsorship deals in football, large and quickly growing global fan base.

Every criteria that determines a "big club" we meet. Liverpool can't claim a single one of those at this moment in time which is why they harp on about their history, most of which happened before many of their fans (and most posters here) were born.

Chelsea were obviously a good and strong club prior to the financial-doping era. City on the other hand...

A victim of his, or more likely Suarez's own success then.

I understand the spending £100 million bit but they did this without been willing to spend top money in wages,, this meant they were ultimately shopping for a lower bracket of player and it showed, then add in the Struridge injury and it was always going to end badly much as their mid season surge worried me.

I just think last season was about right for what they've got, not a total mess up and sackable offence as some would have us think.

Some of their fans expect BR to go now, or if he doesn't make top 4 next season they expect him gone then , but I just can't see how they can compete with us, Chelsea, City, & Arsenal unless they massively over achieve, or one of the above massively underpeforms, they will have all on to finish above Spurs next season but if they don't and finish sixth then this isn't a bad season, or a sackable offence imo under the current regime.

Think Liverpool conceded 150 plus in last 3 PL seasons under him.thats a bit much, nothing extreme but still for someone claiming how defending is easy...

What a ridiculous post!

I really hope this is not the opinion of majority of the posters here. Also, English football greatly benefits from your so called plastic fans. English clubs are desperately trying to gain market share in Asian economies by opening fan clubs, branded pubs, football coaching centers etc. to tap into the fan base. The ridiculous amount of transfer money and wages spent in the EPL simply wouldn't be possible without these so called plastic fans.

So Manchester United recognizes as fans people whom you call plastic simply because they don't conform to your twisted and archaic view of how a football fan should be.

Doubt they'll be able to do any better at the moment. He hasn't massively underperformed either, in my opinion.

The drop from 2nd isn't what it looks like, as everyone knows.

Fact is that if Liverpool want to take a step up and become a regular top four team, they'll need better players. As it stands, there's only so much they can realistically achieve, no matter who's in charge. Sure, there's a handful of managers who'd be better than Rodgers, in theory, but they're not available.

If next season is shite, it'll be undeniable that in 2013-14, he benefited from no European football of any sort.

Good move for them with James Milner. Good squad player that will improve their selection.

Rodgers will have to be far better next year, especially because the top teams will all recruit big and spend.

Don't worry that isn't the majority opinion. Just one narrow minded individual it seems.

Why is it that the likes of Burnley, Villa, Norwich etc. have few foreign fans? You lot just picked the best team that was always on the telly and that's fine. But fans who are linked to their clubs by culture and family history will always consider you plastic. When some yank is giving me shit about Utd being better than Arsenal it doesn't bother me in the slightest because I know they'd drop their support if Man Utd became shit. It's just not in their blood like it is with actual match-going fans.

Go ahead and support the team and give them your money, just don't expect to be taken too seriously by fans when you come out with nonsense like that poster above. The club loves you for your money, but even proper match-going reds probably get irked when they see you acting all plasticy.

From an Arsenal fan...

Don't embarrass yourself further by making such sweeping and baseless generalizations. And stop fitting your ridiculous opinion on other people and organizations by predicting their behavior based on your anachronistic outlook.

Football is a globalized sport and there are fans all over the world. Just because you go to a match in person doesn't make you holier than a guy in Thailand who wakes up nights to watch his favorite team's play live on telly.

Also, TV revenues have long surpassed match day revenues and that is the only way football can grow, not by holding on to such archaic notions. Frankly, I don't give a damn whether people like you consider us to be real fans or not. Bask in your glory and keep rocking your boat.

If you don't agree with what someone has posted here then target him instead of resorting to such idiotic generalizations.

I have pairs of trousers older than their stadium.

Read Grinner's post...

Read Grinner's post..
I can't image he thinks Arsenal fans are somehow 'purer' than any other footballing fans. I though he was talking about fans in all clubs.

But anyway that's besides the point. The 'plastic' fans argument is awful and holds no weight (Especially in modern football) all it does is make people feel guilty for enjoying/supporting something. Which really when it comes down to it, is a shit thing to do.

So Grinner stop being a moaning old fecker and enjoy football.

So I was born in Manchester but we moved when I was three. This however, isn't why I support Manchester United. I support them because my uncle was a huge united supporter and got me into them when i was about 8. Pray tell, what is the difference between that and a kid in the states who's Uncle/Father/Brother does the exact same thing? Why are they plastic? It's been ingrained in them from a young age, just like with many English supporters. I don't support utd because I feel any connection with Manchester, despite being born there. Does that make me plastic as well?

Is the guy in the states' passion any less worthwhile or quantifiable than my own? It's not is it. If anything some of these guys show more dedication by watching games at 4am than some English supporters ever would. Likewise, if some 5 year old supports United or Chelsea because he loves the style of play of Beckham, or Hazard and as he grows up he has a fondness and passion for that team born of his initial fascination with a single player's ability or attitude. The origin of their passion makes them no less of a fan than me, you or anyone else.

Absolutely.

It's anti-inclusive.

Does he want football to be a provincial game?

Sounds like your friends are the problem here, not foreign fans. You let them influence and define your opinion of all foreign based fans.

That's how Nazi Germany started.

I've been a couple of games in my life. Im 22, live about 30 miles from manchester and my family on my dads side have supported United going all the way back from before the busby babes.

Due to my finances and/or time commitments not allowing me I haven't been anywhere near as much as i'd like to? although when both are in my favour one of the first things I will do is get a season ticket.

Do I at the moment qualify as a glory hunter? do match going fans think I'm plastic? I'd love to know your opinion, this is in no way sarcastic I'm generally interested in what you think :)
