Boycott The Qatar World Cup?

I don't understand this - was it banned for Iranians to go to the World Cup?
No I think its more to identify dissidents. Although I'm not sure why they need a list from Qatar as they would already have known who left Iran to go there.

It's just some Twitter nonsense that the usual suspects on here gobbled up. No wonder debate is futile you're going to see what you see.

I dont know what they mean by the definition of construction trades vs operatives,
but it is as below.

Males in construction trades 419 per 100k/ year. Total number of deaths is 71558 per year
Males in construction operatives 505 per 100k/ year. Total number 16246 per year

of all ages, not only 20-50 years.

check the link of the lancet study for the numbers.

It is far higher than Qatars no matter how you look at the numbers.

420 per 100,000 per year die in the UK.

There are roughly 2.7m construction workers in the UK. So going off that death rate 420 x 27 = 11,529 construction workers 20-50 die each year in the UK?

reading these posts was awkwardly painful. Regardless of where, people should not die doing their jobs. It’s not about who scores less.

i’m not aiming at the posters, but just upset by the fact that people’s lives have become so cheap.

FFS. Really, really hope that’s not true.
What do seriously think that tweet meant? and let's say it's "true" what do you think will happen?
Why would Qatar give the list Iranians who travelled names to Iran when they travelled from Iran? :wenger:

TBF pretty much every response to that here is questioning it's validity

Still the situation in Iran is terrible - much worse than anything in Qatar on a human rights level

and let's say it's "true" what do you think will happen?

Nothing at all, I mean, it's not like the iranian regime has been killing people daily for the last few weeks. What could go wrong for people criticizing them abroad.

If you actually read my reaction before wading in you’d see I said ‘Hopefully not true’. So really not sure what you’re screaming about now.

Are you criticising me for ‘hoping it’s not true’, rather than the poster who actually posted the link!?

Is your soul mission on here to just leap in to the defence of disgusting religious dictatorships mate?
I am calling you out for freaking out over a tweet from a random.
Of course the situation in Iran is terribly awful. Point me to were I defended Iran or Qatar?

They are inhumanely killing people in Iran last few weeks not Iranians protesting outside of Iran. They have no power outside their country.
Are you telling me Iranians protesting in USA are at risk of being killed by the Iranian government?

You know many of these folks will return to iran when the wc is over, right?

All online discours about this world cup just reminds me of this

Well many in abroad will surely not be going to Iran after the world cup.
Right, so back to square one, what do you think will happen to those going back to iran if they are in a list of people criticizing the regime abroad?

I think you need to read the news my friend. Armed police aren't sitting outside the London office of an Iranian newspaper 24/7 for nothing. Their government is after them wherever they are.

Probably bad things.
You said abroad and I am telling you Iranians living in the USA for example will protest without the fear of being killed. Reason why I asked you earlier did you mean abroad or just Qatar.

The tweet was about qatar providing this info. You made fun of someone's reaction asking what they thought would happen, and now you say probably bad things. I mean...

nice try but not everyone has engaged in chattel slavey colonialism and genocide!

there are the people who enjoy all the perks of colonialsm and imperialism and there are the people who suffer tremendously from these actions!

the typical western mental gymnastics:

westerners: we are by far the best

the global south: you've killed and enslaved millions. colonised 80% of the planet and amassed its resources.

westerners: hey, everyone has done bad things. we made mistakes yes but we admit it which by default makes us the best.

The tweet was about qatar providing this info. You made fun of someone's reaction asking what they thought would happen, and now you say probably bad things. I mean...
But I called the tweet out because it didn't make sense that Qatar will provide the list when Iran probably already do. Also you are making it seem every single person that protested in Iran was killed, many people have protested and are still protesting now in Iran and still alive. So someone can protest and go back without being harmed, you can't say for a fact anyone who returns to Iran after the world cup will be killed either like you are making it seem.

If we say that all the deaths (15021) in Qatar are construction workers (which is not) but even, no elderly immigrants did not die, no women did die, the number is would be 100 workers death per 100K. Which is still at the same level of young male adults in the age group (20-50) in the UK of all professions.

And is far far better than the construction workers mortality rate in the UK of all ages ~420 deaths /year per 100k

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpub/article/PIIS2468-2667(17)30193-7/fulltext

Check the first table.

I think I presented enough statistical evidens and I dont think I can put more info into the subject.
Isn't the 15k figure only foreign workers (doesn't include Qataris), whereas the figure from the lancet for the uk is all reported deaths in that trade (regardless of nationality)? If so, doesn't that skew the figures? Quite apart from the fact that one dataset (the uk one) was collected a full decade before the other.

No doubt about it. I would have actually boycotted the world cup if it was held in Iran.

fecking hell mate, what a train wreck of a post.

You moved the goal posts on what you originally said, you put words in my mouth that I never said, and in the middle you even managed to disrespect the many dead in recent weeks in iran.

With Qataris making less than ten percent of locale it would hardly make a difference

I just googled and it's 11.6 % the rest are foreigners. Qataris are a minority in their own nation just like emiratis
Mad...did not know that! Still, the two datasets the poster is trying to compare are different in so many ways that the comparison is next to worthless.

Right. It's a shame isn't it that people's lives are cheap for capitalist gain and exploitation.

Odd that Qatar football world cup has been the joint awakening of the western world when it comes to this. Something tells me after the world cup it will be back to acting like this happens nowhere.

I simply wrote, ‘FFS hopefully not true’… if that’s ‘freaking out’ I’d hate to think what your subsequent gibbering qualifies as mate.

And regarding the rest of what you wrote - the concern would be for Iranian citizens returning home (World Cups are over in a matter of weeks, they don’t continue endlessly, unlike your mental gymnastic postings in here).

You’re having a mare here mate, and imo the situation in Iran is a bridge too far for the daft whataboutism game, people are being fecking murdered and it’s out of hand.
What are you on about. The tweet didn't even say Iran nationals protesting in Qatar but the list of Iran nationals who travelled. So I was confused why they will fear going home when they just went to watch the games. The tweet didn't even claim Iranian protestors

What a daft thing to say. Why would I disrespect the dead? stupid post and you talk about putting words in your mouth.
Disrespect even to spell Iran with a lower case "i"

Imagine someone in the ukraine thread "not all ukranian civilians bombed die". If you don't even see how disrespectful that is then I don't know what to say.

I always write with lower case (unless my phone corrects it), even portugal, so it means nothing, it's just you clutching at straws.

that's just a random dude on twitter!!
where are the reliable sources? or confirmation bias is enough these days??

it’s from the leaked files of Fars News Agency (IRGC media) which was hacked by Black Reward group on Friday and every day new bits is coming out. I wasn’t on computer to post the full story, but just got home. Will do with sources and all later tonight

…ooookay

Cluthching at straws? I was thought growing up always to never spell someone’s name and country with lower case out of respect. You know, different cultures and all, something you guys don’t know about.

And you are the one reaching with these examples, not even the same situations but ok. Don’t twist my words to suit your agenda

Mate, you literally said that I suggested iranians going back to iran would be killed. I give up, this is going nowhere, you keep making stuff up as you go along.

And the lower case thing is just ridiculous, literally no one gives a feck about that.

What the heck? That’s what you literally suggested will happen. I’m done myself this isn’t going anywhere.

Like I said different cultures and all. You see how you don’t give a feck about that but someone will with a different cultural background.
