well I knew that but didnt know the correlation between that and calling us rags. I guess we have to call them cnuts riches now.
That's because he's wrong.
Rags was first used by United fans in the early 30s when we were struggling after JH Davies died and before James Gibson became chairman. Most City fans have no idea why they call us Rags though and there are various myths going round, such as it stands for "Red Arrogant Gits" or that our 1968 ECF shirts were made of rags left lying around the Umbro factory.
During the 1930-31 season, United were in a wretched state. The club teetered on the brink of bankruptcy and were attracting crowds of less than 4,000 for some games - despite still being in Division 1.
Harry Hughes, a City fan working in Trafford, tells this story:
“I worked in Trafford then, and all the locals were United fans. I was working nights and when Saturday morning arrived a couple of them asked ‘are you going to see the Rags today?’ I didn’t know what that meant, and then they explained that United fans had started to call their own team the ‘Rags’ because they were so poor and that their kit looked liked rags. So after that I knew who they meant, but when I mentioned the Rags, they’d go, ‘who the Hell are you talking about?’ They didn’t like the opposition saying it.”

That's from a City history book... I suppose it's right, it's in line with what you posted
I've always heard the explanation given more or less along the lines decorativeed posted -- a name the United support used themselves because we were poor. I've never heard it originated with reference to the textile industry/Gibson.There are a number of alternative etymologies for our 'rags' epithet tbh.
Just one for you here:
So named because of the importance of cloth/clothing-related industries in the area.

Do they have a term for the things that their owners are wearing on their heads?
"I lay the blame for failing to win the league (if that's what happens) squarely on the shoulders of that little cnut Tevez."]
do they have a term for the 'rags' trophy cabinet?

1. Media starts the pre season build up saying things like 'it's anyones title' ' City are dangerous this year' ' Chelsea are strong'. The stage is set.
2. Season starts referees are instructed by their paymasters at Sky to be fair and consistent, create a bit of a mish mash at the top so it looks like it will be a real competitive season.
3. Just before Xmas the powers that be give their briefing to the officials and the media prepare their ' United get stronger after xmas' headlines and 'United have the experience' ' City will bottle it' headlines. Again the stage is set.
4. Next phase is to weaken Uniteds opposition, time to throw in some strange red cards, turn a blind eye to obvious yellow cards increasing the pressure on uniteds opposition. The media now start producing their training ground photographs of bust ups(but I've never seen one from united) this creates negativity.
5. Now the critical phase which is to give united enough belief and confidence to take command, they are given penalties and freekicks and opposition players are red carded for the most minor offences. In the background the media now start their ' United are great' headlines.
6. After months of this Uniteds opponents are now so disheartened at their lack of decisions and missing colleagues due to suspension start to lower their heads.
The result = United 'win' the title the opposition manager is forced out by the media leaving them in a yet weaker position. Que the headlines 'united charge to the title' etc and the paymasters at sky count the profits from the army of armchair rags who subscribe again for next season when the headlines start again.......

Do post more -- it's interesting. I do think it's not cut and dried what the proper history of the epithet is, and maybe several meanings were intended. What I know for sure is that it's nothing to do with periods or Red Arrogant Gits.
It's great, in the summer everyone will be saying "they didn't win the last two titles, everyone else was just shit"
