Bluemoon goes into Meltdown

I decided to read their forums for a bit and they're annoying little autoplaying video on the right hand side started to play a video called "United close in on title" love the Irony of that playing on the bitters site.

Its funny because they are now playing in stadium owned by the Manchester city council.

well I knew that but didnt know the correlation between that and calling us rags. I guess we have to call them cnuts riches now.

That's because he's wrong.

Rags was first used by United fans in the early 30s when we were struggling after JH Davies died and before James Gibson became chairman. Most City fans have no idea why they call us Rags though and there are various myths going round, such as it stands for "Red Arrogant Gits" or that our 1968 ECF shirts were made of rags left lying around the Umbro factory.

During the 1930-31 season, United were in a wretched state. The club teetered on the brink of bankruptcy and were attracting crowds of less than 4,000 for some games - despite still being in Division 1.

Harry Hughes, a City fan working in Trafford, tells this story:

“I worked in Trafford then, and all the locals were United fans. I was working nights and when Saturday morning arrived a couple of them asked ‘are you going to see the Rags today?’ I didn’t know what that meant, and then they explained that United fans had started to call their own team the ‘Rags’ because they were so poor and that their kit looked liked rags. So after that I knew who they meant, but when I mentioned the Rags, they’d go, ‘who the Hell are you talking about?’ They didn’t like the opposition saying it.”

That's from a City history book... I suppose it's right, it's in line with what you posted

To be honest, this background actually make United fans quite classy! It's in the 30s and it wasn't our fault to be having kits like rags. Our fans admitted it but for sure it's not the place of the opposition to use it to describe us.

There are a number of alternative etymologies for our 'rags' epithet tbh.

Just one for you here:

So named because of the importance of cloth/clothing-related industries in the area.

I've always heard the explanation given more or less along the lines decorativeed posted -- a name the United support used themselves because we were poor. I've never heard it originated with reference to the textile industry/Gibson.

Do post more -- it's interesting. I do think it's not cut and dried what the proper history of the epithet is, and maybe several meanings were intended. What I know for sure is that it's nothing to do with periods or Red Arrogant Gits. :)

My grandfather told me that it was because we were the poorer team (financially) in the 30s and because we looked like 'raggy-arsed tramps' at times.

It was nothing to do with the clothing industry; there were rag-trade factories all over Greater Manchester in those days.

I just checked out their "Blame Game" thread in the bitter's forum posted by someone above.

The OP was actually being ironic, I think. :)

And I also found the following post deserves my "Like"

"I lay the blame for failing to win the league (if that's what happens) squarely on the shoulders of that little cnut Tevez."]

Off twitter

1. Media starts the pre season build up saying things like 'it's anyones title' ' City are dangerous this year' ' Chelsea are strong'. The stage is set.

2. Season starts referees are instructed by their paymasters at Sky to be fair and consistent, create a bit of a mish mash at the top so it looks like it will be a real competitive season.

3. Just before Xmas the powers that be give their briefing to the officials and the media prepare their ' United get stronger after xmas' headlines and 'United have the experience' ' City will bottle it' headlines. Again the stage is set.

4. Next phase is to weaken Uniteds opposition, time to throw in some strange red cards, turn a blind eye to obvious yellow cards increasing the pressure on uniteds opposition. The media now start producing their training ground photographs of bust ups(but I've never seen one from united) this creates negativity.

5. Now the critical phase which is to give united enough belief and confidence to take command, they are given penalties and freekicks and opposition players are red carded for the most minor offences. In the background the media now start their ' United are great' headlines.

6. After months of this Uniteds opponents are now so disheartened at their lack of decisions and missing colleagues due to suspension start to lower their heads.

The result = United 'win' the title the opposition manager is forced out by the media leaving them in a yet weaker position. Que the headlines 'united charge to the title' etc and the paymasters at sky count the profits from the army of armchair rags who subscribe again for next season when the headlines start again.......

Very RAWKish

In fairness that's been laughed at by others in a way that it would never on RAWK.

I never understand these people and their conspiracy theories.

What is the motivation for Sky or the FA, in making sure 1 team dominates the league ?

It's detrimental to the idea that the league is more competitive than Spain or Italy, one of the, if not the most, largest selling points of the EPL. The oft touted 'Big 4' has spread into the Top 6-7 teams that could easily take the top 4 slots in the last few years, certainty no-longer is their places almost guaranteed with only the order in which they finish to alter. Also the mid-top table pack of 5th-10th is alot more fluid than it used to be and even the 'lower teams' have been harder to beat. Wither that's through all teams improving or the league going backwards is debatable and more generally down to opinion.

A league that almost anyone could win, is more exciting than a forgone conclusion, 'letting' United win so many times in a row and the majority of the leagues in the last 20 years is counter productive to that ideal.

As far as bribery of officials goes, United haven't even spent the most money on players in the league in a long time, it's not even close. Don't you think if bribery was a rampant as they make out, that City, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Arsenal's owners could out-bribe our owners who couldn't even pay for the club with their own cash ?

After all, illegal bribes are hardly something you put down on your FFP, and they are all a damn sight personally richer.

United have been fortunate, I don't think anyone can deny that, but this idea that it's a grand conspiracy is utterly retarded, this self-feeding doctrine of 'the world is against us' is such crap. City will/could win a league sometime soon, so they don't have the excuse of being totally deluded (i.e. Liverpool) and should they win, how did they manage it ? did they out-play United and all the other teams of the EPL or simply out-bribe them ?

Can't have it both ways, assholes.

Also this isn't the worst united team in the last 30 years either and even if it was, the quality of our team is irrelevant, it's not our league to lose, it's up to your team to win it.

The worst Utd team in 30 years is just hilarious

Yeh its not our best but Vidic, Evra, Rio, Valencia, Nani, Scholes, Carrick and Rooney would have got in any of those sides. Arguably more.

when we were basking in the glory of '68, the older Berties would love to trot out the "you used to be known as the rags" (in the '30s) because we could barely afford to kit the team out without resorting to half the team playing in old washed out and ragged shirts and shorts. Nothing new - just recycled shite now they can't brag about taller floodlights anymore

It's great, in the summer everyone will be saying "they didn't win the last two titles, everyone else was just shit"

a new "disastrous" keeper
no regular rb
Rio out half the season and nursing an injury
captain Vidic out nearly all season
Evra distracted and in worst form of his Utd career
Anderson out nearly all season
Fletcher out all season
new hope Cleverley out all season
Valencia out half the season
Nani missed umpteen games

that's 10 key positions and still counting.......

we're defending our title with our league cup side

It's great, in the summer everyone will be saying "they didn't win the last two titles, everyone else was just shit"

that doesnt make sense

The conference is shit but someone has to be the best shit......

Particularly loved this bit:
The media now start producing their training ground photographs of bust ups(but I've never seen one from united) this creates negativity.

Don't bother considering other reasons why, because the only logical explanation is that it's part of a big conspiracy.
