Why is he over rated, though?
He's never been portrayed as one of the best players in the world, nor is he ever included in any GOAT polls, and rightly so.
He was, however, a very good player over a very long period of time (despite a small period in between which someone alluded to earlier).
In his younger days, he could run past defender after defender with consumate ease, without really having any Maradona/Ronaldo esque tricks in his armoury. As age has got the better of him, he's had to adapt his game dramatically and even though he's nothing like the player he was, he still does a job against the lesser teams in the league (West HAm & QPR this year as prime examples).
IMO, he's justified in the praise he's receiving (on a professional level by the way, before someone pipes up about his wandering cock), because he was a fecking great player. For anyone to play at the top level of English football for 23 years is fecking ridiculous and something which I can't ever see being matched - certainly not in my lifetime.
It's only in recent years that it's the "longevity" of his career that's being applauded, rather than his actual ability.
For anyone to say he has stole a living is way of the mark (to the point of WUMming as I mentioned earlier) and I strongly disagree with those who say he's extremely over rated and wasn't a great player.
