Black Swan

I find it interesting that so many of you criticise her dancing because they used a professional dancer (Sarah Lane) most of the time.

The caf are well known Ballet experts.

Either that or they've read an opinion somewhere and come on here to attribute it as their own.

Because she is completely unconvincing as a dancer and can't act - appearing to have one confused expression (that looks like some bird vainly trying to understand the offside rule) to indicate the whole gamut of emotions. And it's a pile of crap as a film, apart from a few unintentional laugh-out-loud scenes towards the end.

That's the sort of thing that can get you into trouble...:nono:

I've seen a few real dancers on and off stage, they don't move as if they've got a broom up their arse. Most of the good bits were faked up, when Nat was doing her thang it was clunky.
Yeah we do know that, otherwise it's like thinking you could do all the bits in Dimi's biopic.

Didn't like this movie one bit. Too arty-farty for my liking and 'look how symbolic this is supposed to be' down my throat.

On Natalie's performance:
She spent about 90% of the film crying and looking into a mirror. Don't see what's so great about this?

Mila Kunis was looking hot though.

She hardly had to speak yet conveys the appropriate emotions shows how great her performance was. The fact that she's being recognized for it pretty much says a lot about how great her performance was too.

Dunno why you guys are being so critical about her dancing skills, she's acting as a ballerina, and had ~6 months of training to try and perform a role that can't be perfected even in years of training.

Saw it last night, really liked it - unsettling throughout and obviously very 'arty' - it's by Darren 'Requiem & The Fountain' Aranofsky though and is a take on Swan Lake so what the feck did people expect!

Don't know why the OP felt so strongly that they felt like walking out - being a complete fanny about broken fingernails etc hardly means the film should be avoided. It's hardly like the serbian film about babies being raped.

Thought it was full of suspense and I liked how it was filmed. Thought her mother was an interesting character though unlikeable for the majority of the film.

Not sure how you can slate the acting too much - they did the majority of the dancing themselves which is impressive on its own. Mila Kunis was good as well considering I'd only really seen her in That 70's Show.

Peter - being an Arsenal fan, I though this would have been perfect for you. I can picture Wenger showing this to the team as they prepare for the 2nd leg at the Nou Camp. I'm pretty confident Fabregas has erotic dreams about Barca and if he climbs up on to the Barca crossbar at the end of the game and jumps off then I think we'll have definitive proof.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

When we left the cinema I had to take a few deep breaths and just pull myself together a bit. It really blew me away. Such an incredibly intense movie.

Though Natalie Portman was really hot and enjoyed the bit where she was in bed then saw her mother sitting in the chair nearby. Vincent Cassel was also very good.

Mila Kunis is indeed hot.

Went to see it tonight with the intention of labelling it an "arty, pretentious borefest" but I thought it was great. I have no interest in ballet or dancing bit was surprised how much I enjoyed the ballet scenes - a feat in itself.

And after never really being convinced with Portman, I was blown away with her performance - absolutely incredible. For those in this thread saying she's an unconvincing dancer and terrible in it, I can not disagree enough.

Just finished watching this. The first half provides an enjoyable intriguing setup. However the 2nd half never lived up to the promise.

Aronofsky brings nothing new to the
split personality device
and the rehashed genre cliches made the film all too predictable. He has gone back to his old 'camera tricks over substance' ways. Which isn't always a bad thing: The scene where the dancer morphs into the black swan is pretty spectacular and is worth the admission fee alone. But after offering a degree of depth and substance in the Wrestler it's just a shame that this film is so bereft of these 2 things.

Portman gives her usual bland, nothing performance. It takes more than standing around looking glum to convey a subtle, shy vulnerability - it takes acting. She isn't 'bad' just lifeless and unconvincing. A real shame that she won the Oscar over Jennifer Lawrence, who gave a really standout performance in Winter's Bone. She did everything that Portman should have been doing.

As for the dancing, Portman doesn't look or move anything like a dancer. She has neither the power nor the grace. I can't really blame her for that though, dancing is hard and can't just be picked up by any old actress. Michael Powell knew it when he hired Moira Shearer.

So overall it's half a decent movie. It's watchable and has a couple of brilliant moments but it's nothing remarkable. 6/10.

I picked up on the gimmicks of this film from the beginning, I would have expected that he had concealed them better, Portman is pretty good and the movies looks nice though.

Good summary this and I agree about Jennifer Lawrence.

Disagree only about the dancing bit, I thought it was very well done. But then again I know absolutely nothing about dancing.

The dancing wasn't the issue. The sheer dullness of the film was.

Yeah it really was a pussyfar for me in terms of a plot, it really didnt built up to anything.
