Biggest bottle job Liverpool 2014 or England 2018?

This can't be a Slippy G thread without the inevitable...

The biggest bottle jobs are the stupid posts/threads that describe every match-loss as a "bottle job".

Instead of trying to unravel often nuanced complexities, they bottle out of it by reducing all explanations to the simplistic, moronic and usually gloating cry of "bottle job".

Not sure England really bottled it. Came up against a similar-level team with a far better midfield and narrow lost out in extra-time. They'd have had France in the final game and would've probably been pissed on by them anyway.

Yes, but the question is not about England. It is about Kane vs Gerrard.

Liverpool was a GOAT level bottle-job. England actually exceeded expectations.

Liverpool surely.

England went out against a better team. They were never going to World Cup, it's achievement they reached semi final actually.

If we’re pointing fingers, how about Manchester United in 2012?

Bigger bottle job than either.

England didn’t bottle it, it’s one game of football which they lost because the other team played better over 120 minutes. Liverpool on the hand, had the title in the bag, until they collapsed in spectacular fashion.

England didn't bottle it. Beaten by a better team and would have needed a lot of luck to beat that France team.

100% agree.

Liverpool bottled it... that was glorious... LOL

Also i think our champions league performance against Sevilla - total bottlejob.

What goes unnoticed is Mo Salah was playing for Chelsea that day and cut the passing lane down the flank which forced Sakho to pass to Gerrard.

Torres was on the bench aswell, imagine all the banter opportunity's if one of them two got on the end of it instead of Ba

Hey, that hurts. :(

Lol just being balanced.

We were 8 points clear with what, 4 games left? Still managed to lose the title. Biggest bottle job we’ve ever had I think.

At some point we were even 12 points ahead.

This season start was absolutely fantastic, defeated Arse 8-2, Spurs 3-0 and Bolton 5-0, I was on the moon, then the 6-1 defeat crashed us to the earth.

In the second half of the season we lost to Wigan and drew the famous 4-4 match which brought the difference to only 3 points, ended up losing to City at Etihad by that Kompany goal which nullified the points gap.

How the hell the season started like this and ended up like this I'll never know. Hate this season with all passion.

But at the end it made us sign RVP and destroyed the league next season.

The thing with the Gerrard one is that if Jagielka doesn't randomly run off like a complete imbecile, it's just a routine header back to your own defence and is never thought of or mentioned again.

Still though, that one.

I think mentality played a part in that Croatia showed massive determination to keep going after the ludicrous amount of extra time they've played in this tournament.

Mostly though, we lost the game because 1) we didn't take our chances in the first half, and 2) we didn't look to change things in terms of tactics or personnel in the second half, even though it was obvious Croatia were on top, that our midfield was getting dominated and that there was too much space on the flanks.

I like Southgate and he's done a good job overall, but I think he mostly carries the blame for this one. It wasn't a bottle job.

Failing at NT level can't be really a bottler. There's little time of preparation, the players have little time to gell, etc, etc.

A midtable club would easily beat a NT who doesn't play together for many years.

 these Spurs fans seem to be the saltiest i wonder why

I am not salty at all Kane didn't have a great tournament I will admit that, Dele either to be fair. Tripps was the only one to shine. The embarrassment is you simply don't know what to "bottle" something means, I should know I'm a Spurs fan. You are basically saying any team that loses "bottles" it which is BS, plain and simple.

I’d say drawing 0-0 away in the first leg of a play off and then getting beat 1-5 at home takes some beating....

England have now gone 14 World Cups without winning it. That's still less than half the amount of Leagues titles that have been and gone since Liverpool last had one.

Some people clearly have a different take to me on what the term "bottle" means. England didn't bottle it they just weren't good enough on the night and lost to the better team. Kane didn't "bottle" anything he was just lacking in quality at a particular moment. "Bottle" is bravery and courage and standing up to be counted.

This.

Jagielka?

How is losing to a better side a bottle job? This Croatia team are in their prime & have been playing together for many years, now is their time. The majority of England's team are very young, at the next World Cup they will be approaching their prime as a team, while Croatia will be passed theirs.

Jagielka?

Yes Jagielka. For some reason he comes running into midfield from centreback to challenge for the same ball Gerrard is going for, even though he's clearly going to get nowhere near it, leaving Suarez in the process. If he'd stayed where he was the header would have gone straight to him...It's actually quite possible when you watch it back that it's him that puts Gerrard off in the first place.

I've no issue with Gerrard getting stick but when you watch it back he's not even the main one at fault really. He just won a header.

Gerrards slip or Kane being a greedy twat?

This England hate is ridiculous. Threads like this on England and posters are nowhere to be seen commenting on Germany/Spain/Argentina crashing out early.

This is an England team with many players having their first World Cup or Tournament experience ever.
