McGrath and Pallister for me

McGrath is one of the best defenders ever graced a pitch IMHO
As a neutral on this, McGrath simply pisses all over Bruce and Pallister

is this dumb or do the percentages add up to more than 100 ... i know a lot of footballers give 110% and the like but wtf is going on?

I can't be arsed adding it up but it should be out of 200% as its a choice of two

ah very logical ... them feckin jazz cigarettes

I'm jumping on the "too fecking hard to call but I still voted" bandwagon.

Earl Gary of Pallister.

Legend.

and Jaap "I never lost the Premiership" Stam.

Legend.

Steve Roger Bruce

Rio Gavin Ferdinand

Being an old fart I can remember McGrath and Buchan in their pomp, and they's piss all over the rest, Rio included. World class the pair of them.

For me it's got to be amongst the following:

Gary Pallister
Rio Ferdinand
Gordon McQueen
Martin Buchan

McGrath was a lot like how Rio is now, only minus the lapses in concentration. Outrageously talented defender ...

Since central defence is mainly about partnerships I opted for Rio and Stam (pre-injury obviously) because I think they would have been terrific together. As an actual partnership that played together is is hard to go past Pallister and Bruce. As an individual player McGrath was probably the best despite him pissing a proportion of his undoubted skill away.

Stam and McGrath could form a great CB partnership. From the team of 80's and and 90's I would play --G.Nev-----Stam---McGrath---Irwin as the back four

Hey Vij

That's my exact choice of back four...

Never have I seen such outrageously talented defender as Mcgrath.

Feck! How did I over-look McGrath.

McGrath. Already pressed the submit button before realising this was multiple choice. Would definitely have included Buchan in that.

I would also have added Buchan had I realised the same.

However, I chose Bruce as first choice mainly because he was captain of a very successful side and his goals ( at crucal times and he scored quite a few - some 18 goals in one season - I reckon it's a record of sorts for a defender ) and his never-say-die attitude was the watchword of that team.

Think i'm too old here, had to be Martin Buchan for me - cool as the proverbial cucumber. Next best for his true grit, passion and goals, and to fart in the general direction of all the Ingerlund managers who ignored him, Stevie Bruce.
Rio Should be made to watch videos of him for eight hours a day until he learns how to head the fecking ball and score goals. :D

Buchan was a supreme defender - unfortunately the team he was in wasn't that particularly great - imagine if he had been in any of our teams in the 90s!

100% correct and the mind boggles of what he could have been now - and IMO he was United best ever Captain just ahead of Roger Byrne

Where's Berg?

He was really amasing vs Inter in the 98/99 season.

That clearance just ahead of Zamorano put us trough to the semis.

I missed Ian Ure and Brian Greenhoff.

Does it matter?

I don't think so, probably not amny votes for those guys. Just one question, where are you starting from. You have Foulkes at CB but no Roger Byrne at LB? Nice job ...

I'm not going through it again. Read back through the thread(s).

Not really. Ure was just about finished when he joined us and Greenhoff wasn't really a CB - although he also played for England in that position.

For me, Martin Buchan just has to be one of them. An incredible player, quick, positionally as good as Bobby Moore, strong in the tackle, good distribution, good in the air. The number of times I saw an opposition player break through and just said to my mates, "It's OK, Martin's got him". And he had!

Who else though? It's tough. McGrath as many have said was excellent. Bruce and Pallister together were brilliant. I also like Kevin Moran and although he wasn't the best footballer in the world, Big Jim Holton used to scare the shit out of every centre forward he played against.

But in the end, one of my all time favourites. Bill Foulkes, a Munich survivor, a great defender and the hero of the '68 European Cup semi final second leg with Real Madrid. Just when it looked like Busby's dream would have to be put on hold, Bill made one goal and scored another:

Old rivals Real Madrid provided the opposition in the Semi-Finals, with Denis Law's season ended with a knee injury requiring surgery. Brian Kidd took his place, but a single goal from Best was a slender advantage to take to the Bernabeu Stadium. Real started the second leg in magical form, with Pirri and Gento soon wiping out the deficit. Zoco sliced Dunne's cross into his own goal, but Amancio beat Stepney to make the score 3-1 at half-time. Busby's interval pep-talk breathed hope into the United players, and David Sadler glanced home a Foulkes header to level the aggregate scores. In a dramatic finale the unlikely figure of Bill Foulkes strode forward to knock in a Best cross to take the Reds into a Wembley Final on May 29th.

This is very hard. Between Pally, Bruce, Stam and Mcgrath.
I'll go with Bruce, for the Sheff Wed goals, and McGrath because he used to jog past the end of my street, and kicked our ball back once.

As a partnership Bruce and Pally were superbly consistent... but as individuals playing to the best of their ability on the day I'd have to plump for
McGrath and Ferdinand.
