United should start following Chelsea's scouting system , what ever Spurs want to buy in the future take a look at him and make a counter offer , we could of saved ourselves a lot of money and heartache. Although this thread would not of reached these dizzy heights small sacrifice.

Ramos wants Berbatov saga resolved to spend the money on new players
14:41 Wed 20 Aug 2008 - Elitsa Savova

Tottenham Hotspur manager Juande Ramos wanted the transfer saga of his Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov to finally end, so that he could make a move for Atletico Madrid’s Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan and Blackburn’s Paraguayan frontman Roque Santa Cruz, British tablod The Mirror said.

Ramos has decided that the imminent departure of Berbatov would “clear the air at White Hart Lane and allow him to bring in the strikers he needs,” the newspaper said.

According to broadsheet The Telegraph, Tottenham's 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on opening weekend “highlighted their need for an increased goal threat.” Berbatov’s possible departure to Manchester United would leave the Spurs with Darren Bent as the sole genuine striker, unless Spurs signed a replacement before September.

Ramos had been tracking Forlan for a month and was ready to offer Atletico Madrid £14 million (17.7 million euro) for the striker. The club is believed to be ready to sell, but only for £17 million (21.5 million euro), according to TheTelegraph.

Forlan’s agent Daniel Bolotnicoff, as quoted by the paper, said: “I don't know anything about Tottenham's supposed interest and him leaving would be very difficult. Forlan is very happy at Atletico.” Earlier in August, the player was quoted as saying that “I am pleased that I am still recognised in England, but now my challenge and dream is with Atletico in the Champions League […] I have an excellent opinion of Juande Ramos, but I am not interested in leaving.”

Forlan spent two years and a half in England at Manchester United, during which he has often frustrated supporters and scored only 17 goals. He then left for Villareal, where he became one of the deadliest strikers in the Primera Division, and earned a transfer to Atletico in 2007.

Ramos was also hoping to attract Santa Cruz, although Blackburn insisted that he would not leave the club, The Mirror said. “The money will come from the sale of Berbatov, with White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy remaining determined to hold out for at least £30 million before he will let the want away Bulgarian complete his "dream" move to [Manchester] United,” according to the tabloid.

Meanwhile, United’s manager Alex Ferguson continues playing his mind-game tricks, hinting that he did not need to sign Berbatov. On August 19, Irish broadcaster Setanta quoted Ferguson as saying that United were good enough to win the Premier League without signing any new players. In the same time, Berbatov was “worried that United will try to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Holland striker, from Ajax if Tottenham refuse to lower their £30 million asking price,” according to The Times.

I most certainly agree with your general point. We're going to be looking way better after the Portsmouth game. I'm resigned to dropping more points at Portsmouth as our team will be so weakened. But at least things will look up after that, with or without Berbatov. I've a feeling Ronaldo will be back much earlier than expected, maybe even for the Chelsea game.

But I don't agree with the media now writing articles that the Berbatov saga is dead because we have not heard anything for a few days. It was always going to go right up to the transfer dealine i reckon. So I don't think the deal is any more dead or alive than it was a week ago. It's only Fergies casual remark about the 48hour surprise that got peoples expectations up that it would sorted quickly.

Im resigned to dropping points too, im expecting another draw... a win would be great but i dont expect our midfield to control the game with scholes, oshea and fletcher, and i think the rooney and tevez will thus be neutralized as they will both end up coming too deep and we wont have any thread up top... but hey i could be wrong.

I dont think its dead i just think its not as likely to happen now as fergie doesnt seem desperate, although this could be his ploy... i was just trying to get some sense of perspective and try and think about things without berbatov, we did alright last season after all.

I agree. There again Im dissapointed that we haven't been able to sign in a decent striker expecially considering that we knew about such weakness for more then a season.

Im disappointed that it has been a problem for near enough 2 years and it hasnt been addressed, we should have signed someone for sure. We defiantly need another option and its there for everyone to see. Berbatov will give us that, but we are so strong in other areas, most of the time it isnt a problem, we just have to get better at playing around our weakness.

Two years ago we had Saha on form and a renewed sense of faith in him and his ability to recover from injuries. We also had Ole, who still did the business. It hasn't been a problem for two years.

Yeah but Portsmouths midfield were crap against Chelsea.

Why do all of our transfers seem to drag on until the dying moments of August?

Last year was a breath of fresh air, i suppose this is the stiff landing we should have expected, back to normality then.

At least we will be getting an absolutely fantastic player this summer, one that have been waiting to see adorn the hallowed red shirt.

No and Larsson scored some vital goals for us.

you still think we will get him?

They are much more able to control the midfield than Lassana Diarra and Kaboul, they don't even have the combined technical ability to control a game that Scholes does. Good players in their own right but Pompey don't have anyone who can control the tempo of the game.

I think United are playing this right and trying to get the asking price down. Let Spurs sweat on the prospect of having a very unhappy striker who’s price will plummet if hes poor this season.

I always wonder that as well. We had all summer to complete a deal for a striker yet we leave it until the last minute leaving us weak up front in the first few games. Last summer was brilliant. I'd hoped that was the start of things to come.

Diarra is more than capable of setting the tempo of the game. Where Pompey are poor at the moment is on the flanks.

Though they have just brought in Jerome Thomas from Charlton who is decent.

But we still had all them when we had van nistelrooy, and we never replaced him with another player, since then we have lacked that option.

Diarra has been a very impressive player since he went to Portsmouth, but I really doubt he can control the tempo of the game, definitely not any better than Scholes can anyway.

Kranjcar is a good player, Thomas only got brought in because they could get him on a loan imo, don't expect him to have much of an impact there.

agreed, that lack quality wingers, they just have that power and athleticism through out the team though, lack a bit of finesse and a final ball

Does that mean that once we 'replace Van Nistelrooy with Berbatov' we'll need to replace Ole with someone else too?

I'm of the opinion that Saha was brought in to replace Ruud, seeing as he was already on the decline at the time and had voiced his opinions about leaving.

Ruud in decline, what a joke?

In terms of his link-up play. And no, I'm not one of those people who thinks Ruud would slow down or game or couldn't fit into the current team, I think he's a quality player who could fit in any side. But if you're trying to say the Ruud from 2003 is the same player that left this club you're kidding yourself.

Wrong mate. Saha was brought in to provide more options up front. At the time if i remember correctly we only had Ruud, Forlan (Flop) and a half fit Solskaer.

Saha was a partner for Ruud not a replacement.

Ruud was was sold because he fell out with SAF. He wasn't the player he had been but he was still a 25-30 goal a season man as he has since shown at Madrid.

Larsson scored 1 goal in the champions league... Not sure he scored anymore. His play was important and helped Rooney find his form, but he didnt exactly chip in a great goal haul.

3 goals wasn't it in total?

1 in the premiership.
1 in the FA Cup.
1 In the Champions League.

Maybe you're right, who knows. But Ruud had handed in a transfer request before we got Saha IIRC.

no because we have campbell, manucho and welbeck as back up strikers, behind rooney tevez and the potential of berbatov.

Im in the opinion that saha was brought in to replace yorke and coles departures, because he was here for 2 seasons with van. and we know fergie likes to have 4 so this was most probably the reason, not to replace ruud.

why can't we have transfer deadline before the season start, so that player and fans can concentrate on the game. why God why... oops why UEFA why?
The big leagues in UEFA's eyes don't start before the end of august

You're right. Want to see it myself too

We signed Saha in January '04. That's before Rooney or Smith joined us. I dodn't think RVN had asked for a transfer at that point.

There's probably a good reason why they do it like that, perhaps to get all the players back from the summer and see where they stand following Euros, Olympics etc etc. I'm sure the teams were consulted before any rules were made.
Ramli knew why but he's gone.
