Manchester United look elsewhere as Berbatov deal stalls

Wednesday, 20 August 2008

Tottenham are still refusing to compromise on their £30m valuation of Dimitar Berbatov, prompting Manchester United to look elsewhere according to reports.

Berbatov has made it clear that he wishes to move to Old Trafford, calling it his "dream move". He handed in a formal transfer request last Friday. But Tottenham will not budge on their valuation and Manchester United have refused to meet their figure.
A report in El Mundo Deportivo claims United have sounded out Ajax about the availability of striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. It is thought that he would be available at a cheaper price than Berbatov.
The Dutch international, 24, said earlier in the summer: "It's a club (Manchester United) that makes me dream, especially as Ruud van Nistelrooy played there and did great things with them."
Ferguson's options as he attempts to bolster his strike force appear to narrowing. Reports last week suggested David Silva had turned down a move to the European champions - opting to stay at Valencia. United were also linked with Blackburn forward Roque Santa Cruz but Rovers boss Paul Ince seems to have done enough to hold on to his star striker. Karim Benzema was another name linked with Old Trafford but has since signed an extension to his contract with Lyon.
There were also reports that United were interested in signing the former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.
Alex Ferguson will be desperate to bolster his front line as soon as possible following their scoreless draw with Portsmouth in the Community Shield and their opening day draw at home to Newcastle.

Another one on the ol' gatorade.

What a shit story from The Independent. Reports say this, reports say that. What a waste of paper.

he's handed in a transfer request?

feck off Tottenham. let him go, your valuation is absurd considering what you paid for him.

Don’t Hate Daniel Levy

[Ed: This may be a little, shall we say, contrary to general United fan opinion. But sit back and try to wrap your heads around it for a change.]
“God, don’t we all just want Daniel Levy to feck off? I mean, I can’t see why he doesn’t just accept defeat and sell us Berbatov. He knows he’s going to have to eventually anyway, so he should just get it over with now so we can all get on with our lives. And that tapping-up complaint he filed is a load of shit. By the time he gets his head out of his arse, we’ll be five points off the pace. He is behaving unprofessionally and generally like a cock, and I hate him.”
Do you agree with the above? Then you must be a blinkered United fan like me, because any objective (or for that matter, and other type of) observer should have nothing but praise for Levy’s actions.
Spurs have seemed the most likely entrants into the elite Top 4 Club for the last few years, and barring a dodgy lasagne they would probably have consigned Arsenal to a season in the UEFA Cup. They are now routinely signing some of the best young talent both from the UK and abroad, along with some shrewd purchases of more experienced players. Bale, Woodgate, Hutton, Bentley, Zokora, Bent (admittedly at a hugely inflated price), dos Santos, Modric and, or course, Berbatov have been added to home-grown talent like King, Lennon and Huddlestone. It’s an impressive squad, albeit one whose last eighteen months have been characterised by underachievement.
Until they secure the sacred Champions League place, many of their players will harbour higher ambitions. And the top 4 will see their closest rival as an obvious place to go to pick up Premiership-proven talent, because it should be easier to buy from within the PL than from top continental sides. However, to sustain a challenge for membership of the elite, Spurs need to keep broadly the same squad together for a handful of seasons, so they can grow as a team. At the moment, much to the delight of United and co, they are in danger of becoming a feeder club.
So Levy’s behaviour during this intensely tedious and drawn-out saga is entirely in Spurs’ best interests. In the short term, he will secure an above-market price for a player who has mentally already left the building, funding further investment in the current squad. But more importantly, in the long term he has sent a clear message for the January window and beyond:
“I can’t stop you bidding for our players, but if you want to sign one of our stars then be prepared for us to make the transfer more miserable, disruptive, drawn-out, inconvenient and expensive than you could imagine. If you think you can come over here, tickle our tummies and take the players we scouted and we bedded into the Premiership and do so without a fight, you’re very much mistaken. Now feck off before I report you to the FA for something.”
And who can blame him. We picked off Carrick two seasons ago, Berba is still (I believe) almost certain to follow; only the da Silva twins will deter us from tracking Hutton and Bale; and we’d probably have tried to sign Lennon already if he could stay fit for more than two games in a row. That sort of interest inevitably leads to cordial relations souring - think of PSV, who provided us with Jaap Stam, Ruud and Park, but have since made it clear that we’re not really welcome anymore, evidenced by our failure to secure players like Arjen Robben.
Robbie Keane, incidentally, is an exception to the rule. For one thing, Liverpool paid way too much for him - he may only be 28, but he is a big gamble for that amount of money. Also, he has been with Spurs through thick and thin since 2002, and nobody at Spurs could deny him a shot at the Champions League before he is too old. It would be comparable to Ole asking us for a transfer a year before his injury - we’d have hated to see him go, but he’d have gone with our blessing.
Berbatov, on the other hand, took four months of his first season to settle in, had a purple patch, immediately started agitating for a move, and then sulked for a while when he didn’t get it. Spurs are treating him with just the same loyalty as he has treated them. So whilst, as a United fan, I subscribe to all the views I started the article with, as a follower of football I think Levy has it spot on.
Oh, and I got all the way through without drawing a comparison with Ronaldo - it would have been too easy.

I think we should all just come to terms with the idea that we wont be signing berbatov or anyone, and if anything does materialize it will be a bonus.

Once the Portsmouth game is over, nani will return, as will anderson, hargreaves should be ready around that time soon and carrick should also have recovered, so we will looking in a much better position than we are right now and still capable of challenging on all fronts. We will only be missing ronaldo, and it will be good for us to test ourselves and do well without our main man, which is defiantly possible.

The chances seem to be fading so lets just brace ourselves for this season without any new faces...but if berbatov does sign then we can rejoice, but its not looking likely

I most certainly agree with your general point. We're going to be looking way better after the Portsmouth game. I'm resigned to dropping more points at Portsmouth as our team will be so weakened. But at least things will look up after that, with or without Berbatov. I've a feeling Ronaldo will be back much earlier than expected, maybe even for the Chelsea game.

But I don't agree with the media now writing articles that the Berbatov saga is dead because we have not heard anything for a few days. It was always going to go right up to the transfer dealine i reckon. So I don't think the deal is any more dead or alive than it was a week ago. It's only Fergies casual remark about the 48hour surprise that got peoples expectations up that it would sorted quickly.

I agree. There again Im dissapointed that we haven't been able to sign in a decent striker expecially considering that we knew about such weakness for more then a season.

Spurs don't want to sell for less than £30M, we don't want to pay that much, but in the end, I think we will end up getting him on 31st of august for close to £30M.
Looks likely?

I might have missed something, but is this only because the media have made some supposed stories up, or has someone from either team came out and said anything that would give us the idea the deals not happening?

Just because the media don't know anything about it doesn't mean we aren't well into negotiations with Spurs. Berbatov's still away on international duty anyway.

The fact the media are keeping quiet is actually quite encouraging, it seems to me that whatever those feckwits say, we can usually rely on the opposite to happen.

Two headlines in the Evening Standard (a Daily Mail off-shoot) over the last fortnight:

1. Berbatov Signs for United
2. Rio Awarded England Captaincy

we won't sign him because of spurs asking price, if it was possible, the deal would have already been done by now.

That was my way of thinking too, but I wasn't sure if I'd missed some sort of genuine information from either club that we won't sign him.

Plenty of time yet then before the need before people lose all faith.

i had a very poor opinion of the media before this summer.

as it is, my opinion has sunk to even greater depths, if that's possible, after all the goings-on this summer.

How it works is this.....

Daily Mail come out with a credible story.
The other rags' editors ask their journos "how come we haven't got this story?"
Journos then copy the story, quoting "an inside source" or "a friend of" and add and subtract unrelated bits.
This of course escalates until all the rags are basically using the same story until one of them comes up with something else then the cycle begins again.
Truth goes out the door. Selling papers is the prime objective.

The berb will arrive at the last minute. But remember, if it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done

Its like Chinese whispers with them. The media are full of bullshit.
