Why have they given him the No. 14?

we'd know more about this/any other transfer in under 12 days ....

100% accurate info ..
less than 2 weeks to go

So lets get this Webster thing right then.....

Its OK to sign a contract for 5 years but if the player wants out after three years he can buy himself out. Unless he was over 28 when he signed. But if a contract was modified in any way it then becomes a new contract and the player has another three years before he can buy himself out. Unless he's over 28. Before this can happen though someone has to invoke something. But this can only happen if the player wants to move to another country. For this he must be under 28.

Then..... all this is ignored by the clubs in a G14 agreement. But the players, 28 and under, needn't follow the G14 rule unless they're over 28 in which case they have to invoke something else. Now, if the modification to the contract is only about a pay rise then the contract is not necessarily modified in terms of the buyout (and the 28 year limit if signed at the second contract) and so the player can buy himself out so long as he's under 28. But only to a foreign country.

However, the G14 clubs have agreed not to use the Websters Rulings because 1) they do not understand them and 2) the G14 clubs no longer exist.
Spurs were not a member of the G14 so they can then invoke anything they want, whenever they want. And the player can invoke stuff too, if he wants.
So there we have it.

The length of the contract also has to be increased for the protection period to start again.

Its a smoke screen. There is no match.... (Twighlight theme music)

Do you think this Webber ruling has something to do with Berbatov's contract having a 2 year extension in (should Spurs decide to impose it)? Sounds like a quick way to get round it to me?

As someone else pointed out above, Webster does not apply to domestic transfers. So United could not get him cheaply next year. A Barcelona or Juventus could though perhaps. But I think even if those kind of teams wanted Berbatov now they would only be offering half of what United are offering anyway.

I was giving him a pay rise I'd insist at the minimum that we extended the duration by one day so as to preempt the buy out scenario.

Am I the only who gets the feeling that this isn't going to happen?

Yeah, good point. I imagine that's how clubs will circumvent it. That and raising the buy out clause to silly levels.
