I've said for a few days now Berbatov not handing in a transfer request was one of the stumbling blocks. The other wanting the full fee up front.

Ronaldo said quite clearly that he would only move if United were happy with the deal, which I take to mean the transfer fee. I think this statement was widely ignored in all subsequent discussions.
An unwilling player used to receive 5% of the transfer fee, although I could be out of date there, but I'm sure any club signing Ronaldo would have paid him a huge signing-on bonus. If they hadn't been told to feck off, that is.
