Benni McCarthy leaves United

Why the feck are people wanting our coaches to be technical marvels?

Just an observation he looks quite fat now, doesn't he need to be active in trainings and yea other than his playing days what's his coach CV like, has he gotten this job on merit or another appointment because other options like RVP choose not to join!?

Got to admit my first thought was his physical fitness looks concerning as an elite sports coach.

Especially considering he’s meant to be working on positioning and patterns of play. What’s he gonna do explain it to them rather then show them?

This will be a genuinely good thing for your young strikers.

That being said, Benni McCarthy should rock up on monday and call Ronaldo in for private lessons on how to score, just to see what the king does.

Another one that got away from Chelsea.

I’ve heard Boehly has a fine seafood dinner with McCarthy the other evening and asked if he’d lead the line at Chelsea but he’d already given his word to The Hagmeister.

Now lets see how Ronaldo likes being coached by him.

1. Who cares what Ronaldo thinks
2. Any player, including Ronaldo, wants to improve
3. How do you know how good a coach he is?
4. McCarthy has a pretty good pedigree as a coach
5. Plenty of managers, for example Mourinho, started off with zero qualifications and never played football

♂️

Hard to know what to make of a coach unless you've actually seen them first hand. People are just judging him on his own technique and abilities as a player but while they give his name some clout in the game they mean very little to coaching. I guess what is more relevant is he has a bit of managerial experience and did well at a certain standard. How that translates to striking coach at this level is anyone's guess but presumably ETH gave it the green light.

He has a good character, and if ETH things he'd be a good addition then I'm happy with that.

In terms of his coaching credentials, Benni has had a fair amount of success here in South Africa as head coach of Amazulu FC in the South African PSL, leading their relatively unfancied squad to a second-place finish and a decent showing in the CAF Champions League the following season. He’s also won more UEFA
Champions League medals than the entire City squad.

Interesting appointment! Great to see more thought going into coaching

also will this be the first time that we have a non-white coach in the bench area? About time

How often have you seen coaches running around in training? Personally never see it. They set the session up and watch.

It's such a random appointment that surely there's sound rational basis for it. It really can't be a lazy appointment otherwise you'd expect to see either a United old boy get the job or someone EtH has previously worked with. So you've got to assume he's the best (or potentially the best) that's available for this role. Hopefully he's more than the best available and he can improve us.

Timing is strange too, you'd think EtH would have had his full coaching setup sorted before pre-season, given how little coaching time there is during the season. I imagine the reason for this could be that EtH realised the need for a specialist coach for the to attackers after what he's seen in preseason (originally assuming it could be handled by himself).

This thread just highlights what absolute zero knowledge some people have about coaching.

Exactly. His experience at AmaZulu is key to this coaching role. His appointment also means that ETH has identified finishing and getting into attacking positions as a issue, so this will bode well for the attackers.

I imagine that he came recommended to EtH, and the timing could also just be related to delays getting a work visa

You dont need to be an amazing player to be a good coach. If it improves us scoring, great

South African coach of the year, might have some bright ideas to convince ETH.

Interesting to see.

Interesting appointment, and a HUGE opportunity for Benni, wish him all the best with us and hopefully our attackers learn few things from him.

Confirmed

Looks happy to be here doesn't he? Looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the club and great to have a black South African back at the club too - in a first team coaching role no less! Diversity of thought, personality and experience can only be a good thing from my point of view.

Was always a fan of Fortune even though he wasn't the most talented player we ever had. It always seemed like he was giving his all in every game and was delighted for the opportunity.

Actually SA kinda suck at football compared to other African countries when you compare the resources available to you guys. Your women team are just about justifying the investment after playing second fiddle to super falcons for years.
That being said, I'm sure United and Ten Hag did their due diligence with Benny and am excited for him and hopefully he makes an impact and open the door for other African coaches.
We're definetly not as bad as you make it out to be. Just a few years back we knocked Egypt out of the AFCON in their home country, and Nigeria nicked a late winning goal in the dying minutes in our Quarter Final clash. A few months after that, all of a sudden SAFA appoints a new coach, who wanted to introduce his own style of play, with new players. The results are horrendous, he gets fired. They hire another one, who brings in new players again to fit his own "philosophy". Now rinse and repeat this scenario since after the 2010 World Cup. Everytime we get better our Federation messes us up.

As for Banyana, they have always had bad luck in the WAFCON, how many times have they reached the final only to come out losers. They have had like 6 or 7 final losses now until they finally won. Luck was FINALLY on our side too this time. We have always been top 3 African Country in the women's game. Nigeria dominating us in football is nothing new. We've accepted that. It's a "voodoo" they cursed us with:D.

Lastly Benni being here at United, coaching at this level, can only help us get better as a Country at some point in the Future. Im sure he will get loads of knowledge from ETH, and the man himself Alex Ferguson. So its a positive for us in every way imaginable.
