You’re looking at it only from a United POV. As you correctly stated, they have already sold Adeyemi, a much more important player for them, for a reasonable sum this year. So the price is not a „piss-take“. They don’t want to sell Adeyemis successor in the same window, especially not when the season has already started. Hence it would take silly money to convince them to change their stance. Bit similar to Ajax with Antony.
On the basis, I suspect, that they believe Haaland and Adeyemi to be worth more than they went for.

The progress will do him good and we'd be signing a much better player, assuming he actually does well. He currently has 6 goals in 26, a plenty of time before he's a 20 goal premier league striker if ever
