Well the issue is that a luxury problem is one like Maguire or Bailly. You just cannot get rid of them if you need to.

Correct. This and Amrabat were both contingent on offloading Maguire and McT onto Moyes but the club got too greedy in both cases so the Hammers moved onto other targets.
We probably can. The part we can’t ‘afford’ would be to have 3 first XI right sided centre backs (Lindelof, Maguire, one of Varane/Pavard) in the club not as starters. Realistically it would mean one of those senior players, on a senior salary, not making the first squad every week because there’d be absolutely no sense in having 3 players like that on the bench.
It's a massive downgrade Varane is the better defensive player. The club should take a chance on a younger more promising target. I would only see value in Pavard if the choices is a defensive three which I think would bring more out of the player.
And we're going to keep doing this. And numerous posters will continue to point this out. And top-reds 'back the manager/DOF/Club no matter what' types will continue to deny this and claim we don't understand how negotiation works and that our negotiation/ football exec team is a first-class one in line with every other large club, regardless of the evidence.
Don't forget the Maguire is worth 40m and McTominay 50m brigade, who will still complain that they're still here at the end of the window
I still feel we should get rid of both Maguire and Lindelof for around £45m (£30m + £15m) and buy both Todibo and Pavard. If we can’t afford we should do a loan with a obligation to buy.

Not really, if ETH has plans that change the first XI or the formation then that's quite interesting and indicates that he sees some deficiencies he'd like to modify immediately.
Yeah, I didn't read the original bit from L''Équipe so I can't say if it's a lost in translation tweet, but if he has indeed guaranteed him a first XI slot and not just a "you'll play as a centre back" that's quite interesting. I cannot see him dropping Varane for Pavard (or anyone really) and even though Varane picks up a lot of injuries, first choice is first choice. So this might indicate - if an accurate translation - a back three like @the_cliff is saying.
Even if it's moot now, it's interesting to know what the man is planning. A back three would still require a better right wing-back than what we have, and Mount would likely be on the bench.

This might work if Pavard is as good on the ball as Martinez, so effectively they'd take turns getting forward next to Casemiro with Bruno/Mount ahead of them.
Equally, I don't see why Pavard at 27 at a better club with a year left on his deal and plenty of suitors in-waiting would choose to join United without a guarantee of a first XI place.
I'll say lost in translation or approximate reporting. If Pavard and ten Hag exchanged I can believe there was talks about positioning and the tactical project. Ten Hag maybe made convincing arguments and listened to Pavard preferences.
