@Raees

There's a player not picked here who should have been picked in the 1st 3 rounds in my opinion.

Ok, so didn't realise he was born in Schwenningen.

It was Robert Prosinečki I was thinking of.

Going to be a bit busy boys, so don't hang around expecting a quick pick. Need to do some research.

Bit on Apolzan, blatantly a dodgy google translate, but I think it more or less makes sense.

Won't post the link because it mentions other players, not sure if that matters but just in case.

Alexander "Piti" Apolzan (b. February 6, 1927, Sibiu - d. December 23, 1982) was the legendary captain CCA Bucharest. He has 1.76 m and weighed 72 kilograms.

He is considered one of the best players in the history of Romanian football. ** said even he has not seen since a quarterback with so many qualities: heading, impressive technical skills, investment, great passer, speed, determination, ambition.

Politically Corecteness-tell that Franz Beckenbauer as the one who invented the libero position, but this is at least debatable. Fantastic Alexandru Apolzan was first played on this position, which exhibited by those who have seen or played with him, while active in CCA Bucharest. It is true, Apolzan played in the darkest era of modern history of Romania, when connections with the outside world were virtually banned.

Apolzan impress by fair play, many saying that they saw the great footballer never intended to foul.

Apolzan signed its first contract with the Falcons Sibiu, in 1941. After World War II was transferred to CFR Bucharest and then between 1949 and 1962, the end of his career, played for CCA Bucharest.
The great Hungarian coach Gusztav Sebes, who built the great Hungary team of the '50s - "magical Magyars", said in 1954, after the World Cup that year, that Alexandru Apolzan,*** and *** had a level playing field equal to that of his players and that would be proud to be able to train.

He won no less than six times the national title (1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1959-1960, 1960-1961) and the Romanian Cup five times (1948-1949, 1949-1950, 1951, 1952, 1955). A tight 22 national selections in Romania, in a period in which it typically uses less than five games per year.

The first match in League: 15/09/1946 - CFR Bucharest - Jiul Petrosani 2-1.
Last match in League: 11/16/1961 - CCA Bucharest - Rapid Bucharest 1-2.

I played 268 League games, time in which it managed 3 goals.

He played for:

1941-1943 Falcons Sibiu
1945-1946 "23 August" Bucharest
CFR Bucharest 1946-1949 (60 matches, 1 goal)
CCA 1950-1962 (208 appearances, 2 goals, successful debut season, respectively in 1953)

Johnny Raducanu was declared a great admirer of former Steaua Alexandru Apolzan: Footballer without strong pair and a boy lover boy and likes to indulge. How he liked immediately cite a babe gave him heart. He loved and gave head against the wall. That's why he died, sober!:nervous:

Not many players get applauded by the opposition gk after scoring....

Ten Montenegrins’ commandments:
1. A man was born tired, and lives to rest.
2. Kiss your bed like you kiss yourself.
3. Rest at day that you can sleep at night.
4. Do not work-working kills.
5. If you see somebody resting-do help.
6. Work less than you can, and the much you can, pass to somebody else.
7. The salvation is in tree shades-nobody has ever died of resting.
8. Working brings illness, do not die young.
9. If you ever feel an urge to work: sit and wait, you will see it will pass.
10. When see people eating and drinking-approach and help, when see them working-move away to give them space.

His Father: Everyone will have what he needs.
Little Boy: But what if there is a shortage of meat?
His Father: There will be a sign in the butcher shop saying, "No one needs meat today."

  • A hotel. A room for four with four strangers. Three of them soon open a bottle of vodka and proceed to get acquainted, then drunk, then noisy, singing, and telling political jokes. The fourth man desperately tries to get some sleep; finally, in frustration he surreptitiously leaves the room, goes downstairs, and asks the lady concierge to bring tea to Room 67 in ten minutes. Then he returns and joins the party. Five minutes later, he bends to a power outlet: “Comrade Major, some tea to Room 67, please.” In a few minutes, there’s a knock at the door, and in comes the lady concierge with a tea tray. The room falls silent; the party dies a sudden death, and the prankster finally gets to sleep. The next morning he wakes up alone in the room. Surprised, he runs downstairs and asks the concierge what happened to his companions. “You don’t need to know!” she answers. “B-but… but what about me?” asks the terrified fellow. “Oh, you… well… Comrade Major liked your tea gag a lot.”
  • An American man and a Soviet man died on the same day and went to Hell together. The Devil told them: "You may choose to enter two different types of Hell: the first is the American-style one, where you can do anything you like, but only on condition of eating a bucketful of manure every day; the second is the Soviet-style hell, where you can ALSO do anything you like, but only on condition of eating TWO bucketfuls of manure a day." The American chose the American-style Hell, and the Soviet man chose the Soviet-style one. A few months later, they met again. The Soviet man asked the American: "Hi, how are you getting on?" The American said: "I'm fine, but I can't stand the bucketful of manure every day. How about you?" The Soviet man replied: "Well, I'm fine, too, except that I don't know whether we had a shortage of manure, or if somebody stole all the buckets."

Milutin Ivkovic 'First the Chemist.. now we have a doctor amongst our ranks'

Cawv9bKUMAA-Xsa.jpg

Dr Milutin Ivković is a well-known historical figure in Serbia. He was the Captain of his national football team, attained a medical doctorate in 1931, and was executed for Communist activities on May 24, 1943 by the Yugoslavian Government of National Salvation.

Ivković – The Footballer

Ivković was Captain of perhaps the most successful Yugoslavian team of all time. During his time, the country took part in the 1928 Summer Olympics and finished in third-place at the 1930 World Cup in Montevideo.

In 2010, the team was immortalised in the film, Montevideo, God Bless You! At the 1930 World Cup, they were the only European side to make it past the Group Stages of the competition—France defeated Mexico 4-1 in the opening game of the tournament but then lost against Chile and Argentina to finish bottom of the group—both Belgium and Romania likewise finished bottom of their respective groups.

Ivoković played as a full-back in the old 2-3-5 formation, and was known as a “quarter-back” in Yugoslavia, despite the fact that his position was more that of a libero like the German Franz Beckenbauer.

Ivković made his debut as a 16-year-old, and was described by his peers as unwilling to forget the street skills that he had learned when playing with his friends near the Kalenić market in Belgrade. Through self discipline and an inexhaustible work ethic, however, he was able to catch up on the tactical training that he had missed when playing on the street.

Ivković – Father and Doctor

Ivković enrolled in medical studies at Belgrade University Faculty of Medicine in 1925—the same year he made his debut for the national team under manager Dušan Zinaja. Dr Milutinac—as he then became known—graduated with honours in 1931. He subsequently married Ella Pops, the daughter of the prominent lawyer Frederick Pops. Ella gave birth to two daughters, Gordana and Mirjana (born in 1931 and 1934 respectively), and Ivković, reportedly a devoted father, and took a step back from his footballing career to care for his young family.

He also furthered his medical career by opening a clinic in the centre of Belgrade for the treatment of skin and venereal diseases. Many poor people reportedly came to him and took advantage of his philanthropy. He also served in military hospitals in both Belgrade and Slovenia, and completed his medical internship in Dobraćina Street during his time at the hospital. His wife, however, died of tuberculosis in 1938, and his daughters were left in the care of his mother, Mila—daughter of Duke Radomir Putnik, the Serbian Field Marshal.

Ivković – Revolutionary and Partizan

Just after the Nazis began occupying the country, Ivković was invited to join military exercises in Leskovać in which he was able to establish contacts with left leaning groups, who later formed the Partizan movement. He then returned to Belgrade to aid the National Liberation Front from his office by transmitting messages and performing other underground work against the National Socialists who had occupied the country.

More importantly, he was also the editor of Mladost, the official newspaper of the National Liberation Front that was organised by the Communist Youth League. Although he did not fight for the movement when it first started in 1941, he was a key figure in the workings of the resistance movement that was commanded by Marshal Josip Broz Tito and a known supporter of the Yugoslavian Communist Party.

His allegiance to the Communist Party ultimately brought about his demise when the Nazis caught him at a football game. He had come out of hiding when urged by an invitation from his old comrades at BASK to play one last match to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the club.

He was caught and arrested by the Gestapo on June 24, 1943. The next day, in Jajince he was executed by firing squad. Now, 73 years after his death, the speech that he gave before the game against Uruguay is remembered as expressing the essence Ivković’s fighting spirit: “Let us fight to the last breath and be true representatives of our country!”

The hour of the genius - Dragan "Piksi" Stojkovic

The Serbian maestro at his heyday was one of the best players on the planet. Relatively short peak and plagued by injuries, he couldn't put his stamp as one of the best players of his generation, but for those who watched him can surely look no further. He was a player with brilliant technique, excellent decision making and what sets players like him and Ronaldinho, Maradona, etc apart is how smoothly and effortlessly the game flows through him. Piksi, a playmaker by trade, could operate all over the frontline and you can see him on either wing dribbling his way through the opponents and setting up his team mates as apart from the technique he had an excellent reading of the game - something that the very best possessed. With his unorthodox decision making he often surprised defenders and opposition goalkeepers and made him a feared opponent by some of the greatest defensive lines in the 80's/90's.

Piksi's career started in one of the more humble Yugoslav teams - Radnicki(Nis), before he made his name in Red Star - the Serbian colossus along with Partizan. Stojkovic wore the red shirt for 4 seasons before he got transferred to Olympique Marseille. With the French side he achieved his biggest triumph in his career - winning the Champions league against none other than his former team - Red Star.

The career of Stojkovic at Velodrome didn't go as expected - he got loaned to Verona and with the expectation of Marseille at the time - the club had some of the best players in their ranks at the time - Papin, Waddle, Tigana, Cantona and Abedi Pele. Stojkovic put his stamp on the team and while his stay was pretty brief he was pretty fondly remembered by all French fans. Unfortunately a knee injury(something that will go on in his later days) put a stall in his career and effectively that was the obstacle that paved his way out of the team and spending some of his best years outside Europe.

Even without conquering the European football with Marseille, he still remains one of the most effective and creative footballers when he was in his pump. Performances for both Yugoslavia and Red Star against the very best sides and defenders in the game - Baresi, Maldini, Rijkaard's Milan, Maradona's Argentina, Brazil were deeply appreciated by both Serbian fans and opponents.

When Red Star faced Milan, twenty five years ago, Arrigo Sacchi's star-filled side found themselves facing defeat by Red Star Belgrade in the second round of the 1988-89 European Cup and their domination in club football could have ended before even its start.

With half an hour of the second leg remaining, Sacchi's men were 2-1 down on aggregate and reduced to 10 men after striker Pietro Paolo Virdis was sent off.

The Serie A champions needed a saviour, and found one in unlikely circumstances as a thick fog enveloped the Red Star Stadium, forcing referee Dieter Pauly to call the game off.

"It was almost the end of the dream for Milan,"
then Red Star captain Dragan Stojkovic told BBC Sport.

"After the game, Milan recognised they were very, very lucky. Maybe it was an act of God! Even today when I talk to Milan director Adriano Galliani he laughs about it and says 'Thanks to the fog in Belgrade we became a big team!'"

Second-round opponents Red Star would prove much tougher to crack though, as the champions of the former Yugoslavia took a 1-1 draw home from the first leg at the San Siro, with Stojkovic opening the scoring after a jinking run in from the right flank.

"That was one of the most beautiful moments in my career," the 48-year-old remembers.

"It was a really big challenge for us to play in a full San Siro but we put in a fantastic performance.

"For my goal, I dribbled past the entire defence, especially Franco Baresi, to score a goal and it was an amazing moment. Red Star then showed strong mentality and strong character not to raise the white flag. We surprised a lot of people that night but we knew it was not over."

The second leg, on 9 November 1988, started badly for Milan as Dejan Savicevic, whose summer move to Red Star had been disrupted by a call-up for 12 months' mandatory military service, smashed in an opener after another surging run from skipper Stojkovic.

Virdis then saw red after a clash with Goran Juric to leave Sacchi's side with 10 men just after half-time.

"Milan were on their knees," says Stojkovic.

"But then everything happened very quickly. After 10 minutes of the second half the fog came in and, in one moment, suddenly it was invisible. The referee wanted to let us play but he had no choice, it was impossible.

"At half-time the visibility was fine, but minute by minute it got worse, First, I couldn't see the stand. Then I couldn't see the goal. Then I couldn't see the penalty area. Then I couldn't see the ball!"

Referee Pauly had no option but to postpone the game in the 57th minute and hand Milan a lifeline.

It was one they would take 24 hours later.

"That Milan team was not one of the best, it was the best from my point of view. The best ever," says Stojkovic.

"When we lost on penalties, after the game as captain I said to my team-mates be happy, don't cry.

"Rijkaard came to me and told me to be proud, he said 'you are a really big player.' That was a big compliment for me to receive from a big star. He told me Milan were very lucky.

"I have no regrets, it is just great to be part of footballing history," he says.

"But Milan will never forget those two games in Belgrade. They were born in the Belgrade fog."

It was not only his performance at club level that lit the world during that time. Stojkovic was at his peak and year-two later he destroyed a Maradona led Argentina side that went on to lose the final in the 90WC.

Stojkovic outperformed Maradona at that tournament, having scored 2 against Spain to put Yugoslavia through, but his performance in the QF is something that can hardly be forgotten. He set up at least 4-5 clear cut chances for his team mates with only the Serb forwards misfiring let the game to be decided by penos. Unfortunately as other greats in the game Stojkovic was one of the players that missed for his side in a heartbreaking shootout. Fittingly the only player in the Argentinian side that missed as well was Maradona.

Piksi's talent didn't know any boundaries. One of his remarkable traits was his fantastic skills on the ball and movement without it. You can always see him everywhere knocking a backheel to his team mate or going on a surging run past 5-6 opponents. Taking the ball away from him without a foul was nearly impossible.

As any other great playmaker in history he was born with incredible vision and ability to set up a teammate. Both long and short his passing was always precise and taking the right decision - a trait that he showed even early in his career.

Of course apart from his individual brilliance, there was something else that made him such a complete player on the pitch. He was dedicated, team player that put his heart on the field. His defensive qualities can be seen below.

Even when Piksi called it a day as a player - putting an end to a turbulent career, he was again in the highlight reels. Managing Nagoya - the team he played for in the 90's - he found his place in the football highlights once again with his football abilities.

After the game was stopped, Stojkovic met a spectacular volley from the bench and although the distance seemed impossible - he put the ball in the net. Coincidence? Highly doubt that.

Man, Myth or a Legend - Ladislao Kubala

The man who built Camp Nou.

ladislao_kubala.jpg
Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, etc - forwards who dazzle the world and attract fans regardless of club favorites. They are under the full media highlight and attention. Alas that is not the case with Ladislao Kubala - the man who created miracles that were never taped at the time.

Camp Nou in Barcelona is one of the most beautiful stadiums in Europe, carries a peculiar name: "The home that Kubala built". Kubala was a player, forward, whose art on the football pitch made building that grand stadium a required task. During the 50's just about everyone wanted to watch Kubala live.

During those times the game was not all about physical qualities but more elegance, more artistic. Alfredo Di Stefano, the blond arrow, at the time bold arrow would be more apt, carried and caressed the ball in such manner that everybody was lost for words expecting the next beautiful move and another spectacle at the Bernabeu.

Kubala - the biggest opponent of Di Stefano when it comes to expressing himself on the pitch was a player that did his trade in the rival Barcelona. His style was not always that intense like Di Stefano's and is probably one of the few artists left at that time - like the Brazillian Arthur Friedenreich, the world champion from 1930 - Jose Andrade and the "Paper man" Matthias Sindelaar.

During his early years Kubala plays for Budapest Ferencváros. Ever since then he's described as one of those offensive players that creates the chances for himself and his excellent finishing ability was well appreciated at the time. At the age of 17 he's called for international duty to play for Hungary. He had a little time tho showcase his talent at the time tho, as he deserts his military duty in Czechoslovakia and after tough few months he receives an offer to play for Bratislava - a team which becomes a champion at the tender age of 19-20 and immediately receives a call for the Czechoslovakia national team as well.

In 1948 he returns to Hungary to play for Vasas along with other greats at the time - Puskas and Hidegkuti. Just a year later however, he decides to ditch the communist regime at the time and flees to Austria then to Italy to play for Pro-patria, then a game for Torino. Whilst at Torino for his fortune he wasn't part of the team that flew over the Alps and unfortunately crashed as Hunary at the time accuses Kubala of being a traitor and not fulfuling his contract with Vasas at the time. He was later banned for a year and along with couple of friends he founds "Hungaria" - an amateur team that was touring around Europe playing some exhibition games.

There were all sorts of players in that team, but none close to the technical ability, vision and talent that Kubala possessed. He had a phenomenal shot and read the game like nobody else at the time. In the Summer of 1950 that amateur team nearly brought the Spanish national team at the time at the brink of defeat. That day was a day to remember for all Spanish and Barcelona supporters as Pepe Samitier - a club legend and director at the time approaches Kubala and offers to change his fortune.

When Kubala landed in the Spanish League he became a top-notch scorer, despite his favorite position being the right interior, in charge of assisting César or launching balls to the wingers. His love of tactics made him come up with an almost childish, but utterly effective, way of driving rival defenses dizzy: He alternates his position with César’s. With just a look of acknowledgement, one fell back to take the defender out of his position while the other moved into the center of the attack.

And indeed he does - his ban is lifted while in the meantime Real Madrid approaches Kubala as well trying to get him to Bernabeu. Kubala firmly denies and eventually becomes the highest buy for Barcelona at the time. On 2nd of April 1951 he plays his first game for Barcelona and immediately receives a call up for the Spanish national side. For Spain he plays 19 games scoring 11 goals. Unfortunately at the time he never gets the chance to play in WC tournament.

Una leyenda

Contrary to his international career his club one is something to brag about. Along with other Barca attackers - Basora, César, Manchón, Moreno he wins everything in sight in his first three seasons in Catalunia. In his 11 years at Barca he scores impressive 243 goals in 329 games. His exquisite vision, impeccable reading of the game, perfectly weighted and time passes along with his genius way of thinking dazzled a whole generation. A generation that he undoubtedly ruled on his own. As usually at the time he was often brutally fouled, upended and kicked about, but his physique and will on the pitch was really something special.

In his first season he led the club to victory in the Generalisimo’s Cup. The season after was even more successful – with Kubala scoring 26 goals in 19 games, a record comparable with the phenomenal feats of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lio Messi in today’s game, and Barcelona won all 5 competitions it entered.

Kubala's success continued - another three league titles, four domestic cups and even two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups followed the five-trophy season, but there was one title that would remain conspicuous in its absence.

In 1961, having eliminated Real Madrid in the first round, Barca lost the European Cup final 3-2 to Benfica. Kubala, who was by then in his mid-30s, hit the post twice against the Portuguese club. That Kubala is remembered as one of Barcelona's greatest ever despite failing to win the European Cup perhaps says as much about his class as converting one of those two chances in the final would have.

Kubala was a revolutionary, and his story is proof of the fact that Barcelona, and by extension Spanish football, dismisses the lessons that can be derived from his evolution, ignores that historical memory from which so much might be extracted. Very few know and recognize in this day and age that Kubala deserves the role of a visionary capable of opening a new era, later shared with his friend Di Stefano, another genius who changed the personality and fate of his institution.

“He was just unstoppable, he had so many moves opponents didn’t have a clue what to expect” reflected former Los Cules teammate Joan Sergarra on the official FIFA website.

“He’d go past one, two, three with style and ease, and then either put a chance on a plate or smash the ball home himself.”

With Kubala came modern times. He was Picasso in his area. He and Di Stefano were friends, both revolutionaries who are comparable philosophically. If Kubala is a pioneer of the current Barcelona model, Di Stéfano also deserves a highlighted place for inspiring that air of a team unable to give up in his Real Madrid, something that still prevails in last minute comebacks when fury is unleashed at the Bernabéu.

Kubala had everything, and watching the still-impressive footage of him in his pomp, it isn't difficult to believe that assessment. Incredibly robust thanks to his love of amateur boxing, he was also capable of pirouetting on the ball or using a drag-back to dumbfound defenders and goalkeepers. To top it off, he possessed a finishing touch.

Some nice videos of him:

https://www.footbie.com/video/ladislao-kubala-fc-barcelona-legend

The title of Frederic Porta's 2012 biography of Kubala is "The Hero Who Changed Barca's History," and that phrase sums up his importance to the club. A before-and-after moment is marked by his arrival: Without him, Barcelona's trophy cabinet would be significantly less full, and without his ability to fill Les Corts to the rafters, the plans to build the Camp Nou may not have pressed ahead.

Great job!

Some great ones there. One of my favourites is this:

Little Boy Little Boy: What will communism be like when perfected?
His Father: Everyone will have what he needs.
Little Boy: But what if there is a shortage of meat?
His Father: There will be a sign in the butcher shop saying, "No one needs meat today."
