Match of the Day should show fewer Premier League highlights and more analysis, says BBC chairman Samir Shah.

The BBC has a deal to show highlights of top-flight matches until the end of the 2028-29 season, with Match of the Day broadcast on Saturday evenings and MOTD2 on Sunday evenings.

Shah told the Sunday Times, external that many fans had watched Premier League goals and action before Match of the Day is broadcast.

Shah said the show "should not be built around highlights".

He added: "It should be built around analysis and examination of the match to give viewers a deeper insight."

The chair of the BBC is appointed by the government.

Eh?

Nothing worse than hearing someone who knows feck all about football talk about football.

No one who watches MoTD wants more insight from Danny Murphy.

Yeah sure if you hire pundits who know what the feck they're on about. To be honest, I don't know who even watches it anymore. Highlights are on YouTube quite quickly these days

Ok but only if it's Jenas and Micah Richards doing that in-depth analysis.
Jenas is no more. He couldn't abstain from sending penile pictures to his female colleagues. I think Richards will adapt well by doing an extra 15 minutes of laughing like a horse.

If Shah is serious, he won't let that get in the way of it and he'll put his best men on the job.

Think Shah is alone in thinking that. I thought the ratings were supposed to have shot up when the pundits went on strike over Lineker that time so they just showed highlights.

I quite enjoy when Shearer is on the panel. If they can replicate something like what Sky did for MNF, it would be nice.

This explains a lot. No wonder he wants to see less highlights.

I don't know if my viewing is typical but I usually watch the games and fast-forward through the formulaic post-match interview and the analysis (unless there's someone genuinely insightful on the panel).

Do people still watch MoTD ? you can literally get highlights on youtube from Sky or TNT about an hour after the game has finished

Exactly what I do, if I do decide to watch it, then I'll catch it the next day on iPlayer and fast forward to just the highlights unless there's something I have heard of but not seen that's interesting

It makes total sense that they'd try replicate the success of the likes of MNF analysis. I imagine it's a decreasing audience who watch MOTD rather than get their highlights elsewhere.

The highlights should just be on catch-up with the show actually offering something.

I pause it or record it just to skip through all the shitetalk and watch the football. It's mostly bollocks.

I only know one person who still doesn't look at the results at all during the day and waits for MOTD.

I’m relatively content with how it is now. I don’t tend to go and look for the goals etc elsewhere and quite enjoy the analysis. It’s hardly must see TV but works well for me to either watch that night if I’m in or the next morning if not.

I can see his point. Most people have seen the footage of the main talking points of the games they care about before MOTD comes on through Sky, social media or some other means. I know I have and it's affected my MOTD viewership. But the talking points around the games of the day and some in depth analysis of those games, which hasn't really been covered greatly by the time MOTD comes on would probably get me watching again, especially for the Saturday 3pm games. He's clearly not saying, let's not show any highlights, he's just looking to ensure the show can survive in a time where the main selling point of the show (all the highlights) are at people's fingertips before the games have even finished by providing some content that people haven't already seen by the time the show comes on.

Same, I just want to see the key highlights and goals. It's a long enough show as it is and it starts late. If they went this way I would just make sure to never watch it live so I could skip through on iPlayer

This might have traction if you had the likes of Wenger, Jose and LvG giving actual tactical insight instead of shearer, jenas etc sounding like dave down the local "they didn't want it enough" "needs to shoot more".

"What did you make of it Arsene"

Camera goes to wenger...

"I didn't see it"

Okay Micah, time to fill in the next ten minutes with your horse laugh.

Sadly I read it more as him wanting to copy the clowning around of modern football media, rather than putting deep dive tactics into every week (how repetitive would this be after a few weeks?)

I literally watch it because the highlights on YouTube are always under 3 minutes. You barely get a feel for the match.

Someone asks this in every thread that references match of the day. Yes, highlights are available minutes after the game. Yes, people still watch it otherwise they’d have canned it long ago. Yes, most of those same people still moan about the pundits they have on it.

Yeah who watches highlights of every game that day with no adverts and a little bit of sometimes-passable analysis between? What fools, they should watch Mark Goldman and Dave Statsguy on YouTube within 4 seconds of the game finishing.

That's me too

There is a massive difference though... the Sky and TNT highlights are 2/3 minute max whereas the MOTD one are 10 mins.

You get to see more from the game rather than just the goals.

I could probably count on one hand how many times I've watched MOTD the last couple of years. It's quite sad really. It used to be a staple of all of our Saturday nights from childhood.

Depends if your team is at the top of the running order or near the bottom. By the time you get to the last few fixtures of the day, it's basically 2-3 minute highlights with just the goals and the odd big chance with no more than a brief sentence or two from Shearer or Murphy before moving swiftly on.
