Except that Herrera plays a more attacking and creative role and would partner him anyway..
Hererra has played as either our 8 or 6 during last season. Don't remember him being played as the furthest one forward of our mids. Coincidentally that's where Bosstian plays.

Gotta love the FM generation. Once a player hits 30 he suddenly loses all footballing ability and becomes completely useless.
Probably lost an entire abilty star over the last season. We should sign a 16 year old kid with 5 star potential for 70 mil instead

Fantastic signing.

I would love Morgan as well.

if cafers can remember by the last season how did we struggle when carrick was not playing, signing bastian do make all the senses.

Lets hope their injurry periods won't overlap or else signing Schweini will not solve anything.

bastian is one of the very best in the department. i think that's the reason why lvg won't want to have a miss

He is certainly no longer at his physical peak and in 9 out of 10 cases in general decline as a footballer. Not sure why this would come as a surprise to anyone.
I'd agree with that; doesn't mean he can't still be extremely useful to us though. I'd take a past-his-peak Schweinsteiger over the vast majority of our rumored transfer targets any day.

Maradona also has a comp to that background music. My theory is anyone will look exceptionally good if they are playing football to that track. Try it with the Bebe crossing show. Works every time.

Its a good signing, but our expectations should be a bit guarded after last year's two big names didn't set the world ablaze for us. Personally, I'd feel much better if we picked up Schneiderlin as well, as he's the only one who is likely to still be here in 5 years.

So potentially our midfield options are:

-Schwensteiger
-Schneiderlin
-Herrera
-Carrick
-Fellaini
-Mata
-Di Maria
-Jones

It is like a dream

Take Jones off that list for Blind without a doubt. I never want to see Jones playing any position other than centre back with Smalling or an experienced defender there to tell him what to do.

Nice to see us have our own version of the brilliant Alonso/Schweinsteiger midfield rolled out this season. With Carrick in the Alonso role.

From what I understand that wasn't a successful partnership by any means and hopefully we don't play them together for that reason. I've heard Bayern fans were annoyed with the fact that Guardiola kept playing them together when it was clear it wasn't working.

He's so German, it hurts. We don't do anything by halves, do we?

Bavarian. He comes out of the mountains - from Oberaudorf - near the Austrian border. https://www.google.de/maps/place/Ob...m2!3m1!1s0x47763b421ace399d:0x41d25a40937a890

The first 14 years he was skiing and footballing and was in the German junior skiing team. His last race was against his friend Felix Neureuther he won (him you can google, too - with 29 he is the most successful German alpine skier in history) - then he skipped skiing and went to Bayern.

Actually one of his Grandfathers is from the Netherlands...

Can he take corners?

Yes, he can. But he can score with his head, too... It would be a waste.
Freekicks is ok.
Do not let him kick the penalties...

I know I was being sarcastic.

Martinez and Schweinsteiger worked. I rate Carrick better defensively than Alonso. Passing wise obviously Alonso takes it.

Also didn't Guardiola play Lahm in midfield with them? You can see why it didn't work.

We began to get the best out of Scholes towards the end of his career when we played Carrick and Fletcher with him i.e. two energetic young players that gave him time to pick out passes and dictate the rhythm and tempo. Schweinsteiger and Carrick can play that role for us now with Herrera and Schneiderlin with them which will make our football (hopefully) way better than last season and not just possession for the sake of it.

Well Schweinsteiger won't be, that's for sure. Not unless he stays on as a coach. I have the same reservations as you, but I think Bastian will be different for a few reasons. He's older and more experienced for one, I also think him working with LvG before and knowing his philosophy (ffs) really helps too, and the fact we have some class players like Herrera, Mata, Carrick that will help him settle. I think we will also get Shneiderlin as well, and then our midfield is pretty sorted imho.

On to the defence.

Why i love this deal is that he is at an age where he will do a good job sitting deep and by the time he leaves Timothy fosu Mensah will be hopefully breaking into the team. Not a bad player to learn from and gives a pathway to a talented youngster

Jones WTF?

I would like to think the days where we have to play the likes of Jones in midfield are now well and truly gone.

Also we'd be seeing more chance of Rooney being in midfield rather than Jones.

Another positive note about this signing is that we do not want to see Rooney in midfield again.

Jones isn't that ridiculus. He was amazing against Real Madrid a few years ago playing as a defensive midfielder. I really thought he could become world class in that position at the time.

He was doing a specific job that game.

You not going to put him in CM for his passing or controlling of the game. Back then we also literally had no midfielders.

While i agree with the general point you are trying to make that we could do with more midfielders.

But i have to ask since when were Blomqvist and Cruyff midfielders?

They were both wingers neither ever played CM for United certainly not the treble year anyway, also P.Neville never played in midfield during that season he was cover for both fullback positions (our only cover).

I realised about blomqvist the moment I posted and as I am using caf on the phone editing is such a pain :p

Though cryuff I did think he played in the centre for some reason. To be honest I was 6 when this season took place and I have seen only its season review. And I haven't really read on cryuff much (the son that is). I apologise for my lack of due diligence regarding Phil too. Thought he was a utility player used in midfield often during his years at United

Jones, Mata and Di Maria are unlikely to play in the midfield 3 IMO.

Carrick
Schweinsteiger
Herrera
Blind
Schneiderlin
Fellaini

Will be the 6 competing for the 3 spots hopefully.

He was given a specific role to man mark Ronaldo in a game two and half years and ago and played well but there is no way he should be considered an option in midfield. The lad can barely control his own feet at times never mind control a game.

And so are you!;)

Completely missed the hype train for this.

Can someone give me a quick update - are we actually on the brink of signing Swine's Tiger? Or is this another empty muppet season indulge?

Looks that way. The guardian and telegraph are reporting it now too (along with everyone else)

In summary then, our central + attacking midfield options have gone from being Anderson, Giggs, Carrick, Scholes, Cleverley, Fletcher, Powell and Kagawa in 12/13 to (potentially) being:

Mata, Carrick, Blind, Herrera, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin plus Di Maria and Januzaj who could potentially play in some sort or free attacking role behind a striker.

Not bad at all.

Can we just remember the days in 2010 when Darron Gibson was our midfield prospect
