Don't really want to bore the rest of the forum arguing semantics with you. I'll simply state that all of City's current regular defenders have improved in the last 2 seasons (Walker, Otamendi, Stones and Delph). We can't really assess Mendy, Danilo, Kompany and Mangala as they haven't had a run of appearances in the same role in which to settle down.
I fully expect Laporte's current weaknesses to be ironed out over the next 18 months and a very impressive player to be available in the 19/20 season. He won't be flawless from day one so when he drops a clanger or two early on this is to be expected. Central defenders, like keepers, mature later than most.
As for lazy recruitment all top teams mostly target established players to fill urgent needs. There are exceptions but the likes of Pep, Jose, Klopp and similar need to deliver quickly or they will be replaced.
I could have picked Zlatan, Lukaku, Pogba, Alexis, Di Maria, Mkhi, Falcao, Matic and Schneiderlin as United players and I'm just an interested nobody. Sometimes the obvious thing is the right thing but occasionally a Gabriel Jesus or Eric Bailly can be secured from leftfield.
tbh I was always under the impression that it was £180k per week but I'm not going to quibble on that, it was the Yaya on £250k a week (which I don't believe he ever was even before pay cut) and the what will KDB on that I was mostly responding too.

Btw @Thunderhead performance clauses are very common, but for you to suggest the players you sign for over 60m are on a basic salary of £100k is laughable, the agent would simply suggest that if you value the player at 60m then it'd be more like £150-£200k basic.
There's nothing wrong with accepting City, as well as United and every other top club pay their players handsomely.
It's amazing that City's wage bill is so high given they pay their players so little and are thought to pay their non-playing staff through a separate company for FFP reasons.
I think media report Manutd players wages including performance bonuses, image rights and everything. For City they report basic wage. Maybe that's how clubs leak the info.
According to The Guardian, your wage bill is £264m. That's before Laporte and before KDB's increase.
According to The Telegraph, United's wage bill is £263m, that's before Sanchez's signing (the wages of which can be offset by Mkhitaryan exit).

EDIT - The point of this being that you have the same wage bill as us. How you decide to allocate that is down to you but it makes an absolute farce of Pep saying they can't sign players who demand a certain wage. If that is indeed a new restriction put in place by the owners, it's because he'll spent north of £400m since he came in when he finalises the Laporte deal and when you sign that many players, it's going to pump up your wage bill.
The players that are leaving won't have left for nothing either, you'll have had to pay their loyalty bonuses off.

I think City's includes only playing staff whereas ManUtd's one including non playing staff and also salaries paid to directors and ambassadors.
Might be wrong but remember reading it somewhere.
I think City leak net figures too knowing that the presumption will be that they are gross. How else can their wage bill be so high? I think they have less players than us too.
We are also looking at their wage bill from last season when they won the square root of feck all. Imagine how high it will be if all those bonuses kick in!!

Even so, it was very high. It wasn't significantly under United's when adjusted for 12 months. If City pay under the current top end market rate and base their contracts on high success bonuses, it just doesn't make sense.
so, from the current 5 record defenders, 4 were bought by city (add Laporte to this)
Bar Walker, all are 23 and can potentially form City's backline for the next 8+ years. Walker's not particularly old at 27 either and City have Maffeo at 20 years old who has the potential to be a very good player.
Expensive, but smart long term planning really - other teams will be hitting these numbers (and most likely exceeding) before City has to invest in these positions as significantly again.

Today, 29th January 2018, the Liga Profesional de Fútbol (LPF) has certified to Athletic Club that the player Aymeric Laporte has met the requirements demanded in the applicable legislation for the valid unilateral resolution of the employment contract that bound him to our Club. Said certification indicates that the player has unilaterally shown his will to terminate the contractual relationship that bound him since 2009-2010 season and that the amount of compensation established in the contract has been deposited.
Athletic Club would like to thank the player for his dedication during the time he has been with the club.
In this sense, Athletic Club will continue to work so that being part of its first team remains the maximum personal and professional aspiration of each and every one of the players, representatives of a unique sporting philosophy and project.
Our future is built on a choice freely adopted in the past and that only carries a sense of pride. Hundreds of players who have considered our first team as their aspiration have served this election; and this bet is found both in those who have remained in Athletic throughout their sporting career due to their own desire, as well as in those who have had an unwanted exit resulting from the technical decisions of each moment. Guessing the big unveil will involve some inflatable bananas, Curly Watts, Les Battersby and the blissful sound of empty seats.
Personally think it is a bit narrow-minded and uncool to not let Laporte have that press conference just for the sake of a big unveiling at his new club. He obviously seems to care about Bilbao and their fans.
If it was us, I don't think we would have prevented them from holding that conference, we have always freely allowed the selling club to openly say our name (during the Pogba and Sanchez transfers for example) even though we keep shtum about it until the unveiling.

When he did he say we were broke? When he was talking about money he said 'Even City', the inference clearly being City are a very rich club themselves.
How good is Laporte?
I watch quite a few Spanish games but can't say enough to make a truly honest assessment but from what I've seen he's a good defender! Good ball player, Likes to play a forward pass into midfield something pep loves. I think he'll do well, unfortunately.
Can this stop? Baldiola, Fraudiola, Loserpool (in the RAWK thread). It's embarrassing (and RAWKish). There's definitely been an increase of it recently.
Hope he turns out to be another Mangala and fail badly so that they can spend another £70m on a defender next season.

I think the guy i listened to was Terry Gibson. Im sure it was. Couldnt remember when i posted originally but thinking about it, pretty sure
bravoIn his age group and for a ball playing defender, he has few peers IMHO. Bailly should hope to be as good as Laporte one day, for example. There are similarities between the two although the Frenchman has much more experience as a starter in a big league than the Ivorian (More than double the matches). Only question on Aymeric is whether he has really recovered well enough from his leg injury (Broken leg and dislocated ankle) as I have not seen much of him in the past 2 seasons
