Australian Open 2012

I was half joking. I'm fully aware of the mental pressures of tennis (I play table tennis nationally, which at the top levels is just as difficult mentally). But that set at 5-5 was ridiculous - easy forehands/backhands being netted everywhere.

To call me clueless is a bit stupid.

Can't believe I've wasted my 5k post explaining myself over a joke.

Table tennis is piss easy.

That piss poor backhand into the net at Break point at 5-5 will haunt Murray for a long long time.

Anyway now atleast I'll watch the final on Sunday without any expectations whatsoever

He didn't bottle it, either could have gone through to the final based on that final set. Djokovic had the luck on his side this time.

Both were bottling it just as hard as the other. When have you ever seen Djoko miss so many shots like he did towards the end of that last set? Murray had opportunities when Djoko was playing like that, but he bottled it just as hard.

I'm not taking anything away from him, they've been playing for 5 hours straight etc etc, but the best players in the world take those chances - Murray's proven time after time that he can't seem to do that!

Maybe having Lendl will help him - I hope so, I want to be proven wrong in the near future.

He bottled it. Winning the 88 minute 3rd set and then promptly going 4-0 down in the next is bottling it. He should have rammed home his advantage instead of rolling over in the next set.

Harsh, but true.

Although great credit for him hanging in there in the fifth and almost coming back, but his chance had gone really by then.

Murray will never win a Slam.

He's good enough to, but won't.

What makes it worse is that I always get drawn in by this, and get so angry when he doesn't close it out. It's a shame the other 3 are so likeable. I really want to hate them. Bah.

EDIT: Yes, I am a touch frustrated. I'd done so well in trying not to watch this...

I don't think its a mental job, Murray isn't good enough or better than Djoko, Nadal or Fed.

On his day, he's better than all of them. But he's not got the mental strength needed to win when it's not his day. Djoko, Fed, Nadal - they can all beat others when they're not playing so well. Murray - nah.

Novak is an absolute beast at the moment. The guy can outlast Nadal. No surprise Murray couldn't pull it out.

Novak will win the tournament now.

To be fair it didn't come across a joke and at that point they'd been playing for what? Over 4 hours? I don't think any shots are easy shots at that point.

Hmmm I dunno. That will have taken a lot out of Novak.

I was half-joking - I wasn't about them both bottling it at the same time.

Yes, they've both been playing for 4+ hours, with ridiculously long rallies, but the best of the best players can cope with that, and come up with the goods when needed. Murray had so many chances - when do you ever see Djoko missing the shots he did at crucial moments there? But then he flops an easy backhand into the net. Djoko then goes on to win after several other crucial misses.

Murray played well, certainly - but to beat the best (and therefore become the best) you need to pull through moments like that - Djoko, Nadal and Fed have all done that many times before. Can you say the same for Murray?

Are you Judy Murray? Can't handle me criticising your son?

Lay off the insults, don't be bitter because your son bottled it.

He didn't bottle it. He came close to beating the greatest player in the world. The standard these guys play to is unreal and bottling it insults are way off. Especially on a forum like this, where football is king.

Tennis is becoming the new F1. Dull as fecking dishwater watching the same people in every final. It's like watching Dave.

Nah, I think you're over-rating him now. This was the best I've seen him play, the problem for his that Novak, Nadal and Federer are better than him. He showed great mental strength to come back from 2-5 in the last set or to win the second set after being 2-0 30-0 down on his service.

He is good enough to win a slam. He's just not better than Nadal or Djokovic. Federer, not sure. Probably not.

The problem for him is that it's almost guaranteed that he has to go past two of them to win a slam.

He did. Goes 2-1 up, loses the next 6-1. Pulls back to 5-5, misses 2/3 very easy shots (that he'd make 99 times out of 100) and then loses, despite Djoko faltering a bit too. No matter what way you look at it, Murray through his advantages away - he bottled it.

And don't assume I'm just an armchair fan. I've played a similar sport to a higher level than most on here have played any sport (including football), so I think I'm qualified to have just as much of an insight on mental performance and the importance of it than most, probably including you.

Of course he bottled it a bit in the 4th and 5th set. It's hardly like Djokovic came up with awe inspiring stuff to go 4-0 up in the 4th set, it was just slack and sloppy play from Murray, same thing in the 5th at 5-6 to give Djokovic 2 BP, his opponent didn't have to do much, Murray handed it to him.

Well he's beaten them all before, sometimes comprehensively (albeit in 3 set matches most of the time). There's not much stopping him from beating them in a slam - apart from his tendancy to choke.

That means feck all. That's almost like saying we should take Jamie Redknapp or any thick footballers views seriously on football. I'm a serious punter on the horses but I never listen to what jockey's say.

I know what you're saying but it's not like he was up against some no hoper. It's all well and good saying to beat the best you have to do this and that. And you're right. The problem is he was playing the best there is at the minute and someone that absolutely loves playing on that surface it would seem.

Stop acting like such a fanny, Ubran-Ned. You looked for a reaction, got one and now we can all move on.

I'm not acting like anything - it's only Murray's fanboy's who completely disagree with me. I'm stating an opinion popular with most people who watched that game - why should I cater to the needs of those who can't handle their idol messing things up (yet again)?

Ok mate, it means nothing. Sure. Nice way to slyly avoid my main point in that post too.

I may just stop replying to you, you've cut out the insults now and you've proven that there's no point debating with you. 'Murray didn't bottle it...'
