Australia tour of India - 4 tests

*yawn* Oz cricketers are notorious for being bad losers and have never shied away from pushing the line as far as it can be, even dwelling into the "cheating" zone at times.

I find it hilarious when some ex Oz cricketers come out to speak against sledging. So pathetic and hypocritical.

James Sutherland on SEN radio in Melbourne:

"I find the allegations questioning the integrity of Steve Smith, the Australian team and the dressing room, outrageous...We reject any commentary that suggests our integrity was brought into disrepute or that systemic unfair tactics are used, and stand by Steve and the Australian cricketers who are proudly representing our country." -James Sutherland

These ain't allegations. He was caught on TV trying to blatantly cheat.

Surprising win. Batting needs to improve if we want to win this series. Vijay is missed. He's much better than Mukund. I'd rather play Dinesh Karthik when Vijay is unavailable.

what? That doesn't make sense. It's not like there's an obligatory TN quota to be filled.

Karthik doesn't open in first class cricket either. Mukund's coming off the back off a very strong season and deserves his place.

AUS won the toss and elected to bat. Maxwell in for Mitch Marsh, Pat Cummins in fort Mitch Starc.

Smith has the ugliest technique in the world and because of that I haven't been a big fan but his numbers in test cricket speak for themselves.

Similar to Chanderpaul, he looked so awkward at the crease but scored bucketloads of runs.

A great innings from Smith once again. Hopefully there won't be any questions about his technique anymore. His concentration, application and hand-eye coordination trumps that unconventional stance and supposed bad technique. Any technique is as good as output it gives and Smith has success with his in all conditions which is all that matters.

3 Visiting captains to score two or more centuries in a series in India. Smith is the third to do so, in this series. The first was Clive Lloyd who achieved this on two tours - 1974-75 and 1983-84, two centuries in each. The other was Alastair Cook in 2012-13 with three centuries.

97 Number of innings taken by Steven Smith to complete 5000 Test runs - the joint seventh-fastest and third fastest for Australia after Don Bradman (56 innings) and Matthew Hayden (95). Among the six batsmen quicker than Smith, Hayden is the only one to play in the last 30 years

4 Batsmen who had average in excess of 60 when they completed 5000 runs (average at the end of the match) - Bradman (97.94), Wally Hammond (61.61), Garry Sobers (60.60) and Jack Hobbs (60.08). Smith averages 60.73 at the end of the first day. His average will remain above 60 even if he gets out without adding any more runs in this innings.

53 Tests played by Smith to reach the milestone - the third-quickest after Bradman (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (52). Overall, Smith is the 89th player to score 5000 runs or more and the 20th for Australia. His average is second only to Bradman among the 89 players.

19 Centuries for Smith, the fourth-most by a batsman at completion of 5000 runs (end of the match). Bradman scored the most (21) and Hayden and Gavaskar made 20 each. Sachin Tendulkar and Neil Harvey had made 18 tons.

Best batsman of the modern era if he keeps going this way. Averages 53 away from home as well, so he's no flat track bully.

Finally a team is going to cross the 300 run mark in this series. Three games and 9 innings in.

A hundred in test cricket isn't something to applaud. It's an achievement sure but not a huge one especially for someone like smith who have many of them.

Isn't it normal for both sides to applaud a century?

Great response from India today. To end the day in the position they are in after australia starting at 300/4 is exceptional. Great fight.

Kohli's needs to fire today. Also need a big innings from Pujara and Rahane to get close to that score.

Don't think India are in a very strong position just yet. More than 300 behind with sort of an out of form batting line up isn't going to be easy.

Smith also had an epically patchy start. Pretty sure he averages near 80 if you take out his first 10 or so tests. Sangy levels of insanity.

Nowhere close but this has been a solid start.

Looking forward to today's play.

Top quality batting from Vijay.

20 overs, 29 runs in the morning and they've stepped it up beautifully.

I can see this test going into draw, beautiful batting wicket.
