Attention PS3 tards

Tri-montly? That's not a fix, that's a number of small bodges

 Well it's still holding in there. Must say it has started to scratch discs though. Any ideas why this might be, Lambs? I'm pretty sure it hasn't been moved whilst still playing, which is the only reason I could think of.

I would think with all the dismantling, you've dislodged your optical lens. There's probably fixes online, though you'll probably need to replace it (which shouldn't be difficult).

Surely no sound/audio is simply an output problem instead of a hardware one.

I would take the gamble personally. Is this person thick by any chance?

As far as I know, the PS3 won't blink an eye at that if there is not an HDMI cable attached. If there is one attached and it cannot get a sync, then it should reset itself.

It probably is exactly that, and can be easily reset to default.

I wouldn't dare leave half the electronics on that are made nowadays! Oh and sod you Weaste, if everyone takes your advice and leaves their 360s and Dell PCs running all the time, we'd end up with the great fire of England!

Well, it's made by Sony though, so..... apart from those exploding batteries, they've never really had a problem. You should in theory make sure that you set the controllers to turn themselves off.

The trouble with this PlayTV thing and the sync with the PSP is that it turns itself on and off. Then you have the female human that when no programming is currently ready to be recorded can't even be arsed to put it on standby before she goes to bed. So, as the recording thing happens and the machine is already on, when the recording finishes it doesn't turn itself off.

It doesn't help when you've got a woman like mine who thinks it's a crime to have the sky+ box sitting there not recording anything. I swear she trawls through the listings to have it recording at all times!

Luckily, I've never pointed out it's better to record in HD, otherwise it would be even worse.

Yeah, but Sony don't make money on the hardware, they make it off SCE WWS and the per disc licence royalties from other parties.

They really should get chummy. Ok, here's PS4, it's going to use Playstation Live powered by Microsoft. Never going to happen though is it, because Sony are no longer a simple consumer electronics manufacturer. Give Microsoft the subscription money and part of the content takings, I'm sure that they'd accept that.

Windows backing the PS4? No thanks. Sony might not be brilliant when it comes to developers, but that would be just shocking!

Besides, three machines to the market is better than two.

It doesn't have to be Windows, XB360 doesn't run Windows. Linux has been removed from the PS3, although I wouldn't be surprised if during the next calender year you see Android or Chrome OS on it. That's Microsoft's greatest fear, that the box in the living room will then take over the entire house and make the PC in the home redundant. IMO it's the only reason that they are even in this game in the first place. Microsoft don't necessarily require Windows to run on the living room box itself, but rather somewhere in the home that everything else can attach to. The base PC simply steams video of the desktop to the other devices, not much different to how remote assistance, remote desktop, or even citrix works.

They are probably going to have a harder time of it than M$ did if they do. Unless they, like nintendo, can offer something different from the other two.

They seem to have blasted their way into other markets. Ask an 18 year old kid what a Walkman is for example. How Sony dropped that ball I'll never know. fecking about with mini-discs and ATRAC most probably.

Ask a 12 year old then. They only know iPods and don't even callvthem mp3 players.

My missus does this.

Yes, but there were gaps in those markets. I can't see where there is in the gaming market, not in today's climate anyway.

Plus, Mac's are gay.

Update: when I first turned it on it worked but then it quickly froze and I could get nothing from for about another half hour, it wont even go into recovery mode.

A few moments ago it started working again, for a good 5 mins but it then went into a matrix screen:

This is on AV cables btw, I havnt got it working on HDMI yet.

So Cafties, what needs to be done to fix this bad boy? A clean? A replacement of something?

Wow.

So the HDMI connection doesn't work? Maybe it's a resolution setting issue (I don't know what your TV does) Have you tried holding down the power button? supposedly that resets the outputs.

HDMI does work, as does the AV but it takes a while to get it going.

Yeah, I cant get the recovery mode up, I have a feeling it could be a HDD issue but why that would cause no audio/video I have no idea.

I might just give it a clean inside as RedLambs suggested

I missed that bit about recovery mode in your first post there, sorry 'Taters.

Does the internet browser work? PS Store? Games?

That doesn't look like a hdd problem. I'd open her up and give her a good clean, I'd also get the heatsink off, clean both that and the chip it sits on of the thermal paste on them, re-paste (you can get it from maplins, you only want a thin layer) and rebuild. Google the problem too, because it might be something silly.

So essentialy do the YLOD repair?

Ah, mini-discs, they were all the rage here for a very brief period of time. Pretty expensive too.

Should I do the heat gun thing aswell or will relaying the thermal paste suffice?

That reminds me of when games on the SNES used to crash. Taking the cartridge out and blowing it worked every time. Those were the days.

I guess so, if that's what the YLOD repair is? I don't know, I've never looked.

Heat gun thing? Again, I don't know what others are saying, I've repaired all my consoles (and mates) through knowledge of what I've done to repair and overclock my PC's.

Oh and yes, arctic silver is perfect. Just get an old credit card or similar and smear it on with a light film. Make sure you get all the old off first though and clean it off with something like TIM heatsink and cpu cleaner (again from maplins or similar and will do the motherboard too).

Breakthrough!

I left it alone for a while and had another go, was on for a good five minutes then just as I went to turn it off so i could attempt recovery mode it kille ditself again so its definately a heat issue.

Givin git a clean up and replacing the thermal paste when it arrives should definately do the trick...right?
