Athletics World Championships 2009

9.71 and you come second... that's got to hurt.

Awesome, awesome run by Bolt though. He was in control all the way.

The bar has been raised significantly, what a legend this bloke is.

I saw it, I've watched the video about 20 times, and I still pinch myself to believe it. If he thinks he can hit 9.4 right now I believe him. However there can't be much more left for him to do, motivation is going to be a problem. He either steps up to 400m and takes on MJ's world record or he quits having done everything.

I'd like to see him attempt the long jump, putting his speed onto the runway, get it right and we could see a 9m jump.

The long jump record of 8.95m set by Mike Powell in 1991 is a very good record, no one has got nearer it since that famous Powell Vs Lewis duel at those world championships.

The progression of the Long jump record has some what stagnated over the years, by including Beaman's jump, it's hardly been extened over the past 40 years. I know the technicalities and process of the event may be too much for Bolt to grasp, but he's got the speed that could generate some serious distance, in a similar way that Lewis used to do. It's just another challenge that may inspire him to stick around in athletics a bit longer.

The longer Bolt stays around, and continues to break records, the more people are going to watch the sport and perhaps it can make a come back of sorts. In a way I see Bolt very much like Lance Armstrong. He'll bring people out to see him, no matter what he's doing on the track, Lance has done the same for cycling and added extra media interest.

The long jump record would be a tough nut to crack. As Dan said, although there's been a few good jumpers this season, nobody's got within 20cm of it in the last 15 years. I think Carl Lewis was unlucky not to break the 9-metre barrier and would have done but for some dodgy officiating. Beamon's record itself was an amazing jump, but due to the strong tailwind and high altitude of Mexico City meant he would have struggled to get within 50cm of that at sea-level.

Remember Kevin Young back in '92 doing that crazy 46.78s in the 400m Hurdles, he was a big guy, about 6ft 4 inches. Would love to see Bolt have a go at that event in the future.

I remember that, as I didn't think anyone was capable of beating Moses record at the time. I felt he was so far ahead in that event, we would need to take another 3 or 4 years to get the record, in a similar way Coe's 800m record stood for ages.

I recently watched all the Olympic films on Espn classic, and was wondering given a years training in modern conditions and at the peaks who would win in a Olympic's champion of champions... I'd have to say regardless of modern training Bolt would edge a 100m, but from whom?

I'm not convinced Bolt would be a success at 400m, either straight or hurdles. I'm sure he said in an interview (possibly on Top Gear) that he took around 50s to run the 400 last time he tried.

Long jump on the other hand, I think he could do. He could take a bit off his pace to control his stride and still be the fastest guy out there.

He did around 45 seconds earlier this year, clip below.

There's scope for improvement in the 400m - it hasn't really moved on at all during the last 25 years. In fact it was a lot stronger in the late 80s/early 90s. I think Johnson would have brought it into the 42-second range but for injury in 1996.

What kind of run up do you get for the long jump?

Only Bolts pace isn't generated from the start, more from the 30m mark, up until that point it's pretty much level standing.

It's no more than 30m, the problem with Bolt doing the long jump will be the stresses put on his take off leg.

Evora vs Idowu in the triple jump final has got off to a great start. Evora opened with 17.54 and Idowu 17.51, it should be a fascinating competition right through to the final jump, hopefully Idowu can finish on top this time.

60 metre Sprint Speed Test
according to this coaching site, it's 60 meters although it doesn't seem to have an official distance, according to wiki the average number of strides is 20-22 for the top male athletes, I can confirm from having just watched the 100 sprint again that, that is approx more than half way. By this time Bolt is well clear

Bolt hits top speed from 60-80m. It's not really an issue though, he was already leading by the 20m mark in the final.

Bolt has the build to be a great 400 metre runner if he ever decides to become 200/400 man. As for long jump, it's not clear he has the same god-given talent in that event, which is not just about speed on the runway. I wonder if he might appear in the 4x400 final, given that it is usually after the sprint relay.

Well done Phillips Idowu on finally getting that gold medal he's promised for so long.

Can someone tell me when the 200m and the 4x100m finals are?

200m Mens final on Thursday 19.35 GMT, 4 x 100 Mens final Saturday 19.50 GMT

I'm in Berlin for a week got tickets for the final day 23rd but might get able to get tickets for tomorrow with the 200m final.

That woman does look pretty manly but if she had a dick I'm sure someone would have noticed by now!
