Athleticism regressed after joining Man Utd

It's always fun reading couch oafs talking about premier league players being "fat".

You could put 100 footballers in their boxers in a lineup and tell the average person to rank them from fittest, fastest and most agile to least based purely on appearance and the vast majority of people would get it completely wrong. Christ, people think that Ronaldos physique is the pinnacle of what a footballer should look like. Its not. A lot of Ronaldos physique is vanity.

People have different builds and propensity to be fatter or thinner but Rooney was rarely unfit during his time at United despite being a solid unit the entire time. If he let himself go, it was a rapid decline but the engine was good for most of his career and he clearly worked his socks off to be fit.

I would wager that most of our players are very fit looking to the eye but if you actually benchmarked them they would perform poorly for elite level athletes.

Fitness comes from grinding. Doing horrible work that is not fun and pushing yourself into the right effort zones for the right amount of time and getting optimum recovery both in nutrition and rest. Something as seemingly simple as sleep has a huge impact on performance.

RR has clearly moved away from a high workrate game to something much easier but I don't think he has the team to do that much in the time hes had here and the players don't seem to really be buying into it. Fingers crossed the new manager can sort out this mess. Being fit is quite literally the baseline for what should be expected from elite footballers who are on £100k+ / week.

I think that is nonsense to be honest. If anything, it is the complete opposite. He has reduced his muscle mass as he gets older so that he retains as much speed and athleticism as possible. I would argue that his physique is focused towards maximising his performance, rather than vanity.

Pogbas stride is like watching a panther in motion, a thing of beauty. I dont really agree with the points in OP.

Its too much confirmation bias.

Correct. He started doing that already when he was still at Madrid - he looks visibly leaner now than he used to in his prime.

Yup, his physique matches his style and abilities of the moment. He gained muscle when he went to a more direct, powerful approach. For a while he relied heavily on his superior physical abilities which were the product of his work. And he gradually lost his weight when he turned into a poacher and was relying on positioning and off the ball movement.

This is actually amazing because not only he understands what he needs but he also has the ability and discipline to transform his body accordingly. That's extremely uncommon.

That can't be real, look at Luke Shaw ffs...

I'm not entirely sure whether bayern use peds or not in but even if they did their bodybuilding work is super impressive, wish we could bring them over.

Didn't know if it this was worth starting a new thread for, but on the topic of fitness and since Mick Clegg was mentioned, it seems timely that Off the Ball have done an interview with Mr Clegg (who I believe have a book coming out)
