What makes Atalanta so dangerous is how willing they are to overload the box when the ball is out wide. In almost every attack, they have a minimum of 3 players in the box, and quite often, they can have 5 players. That puts a ton of pressure on the opposition who then become focused on sitting back and clearing the ball, thus allowing Atalanta to win the ball quicker. This is also made possible because of Papu Gomez and a wide centre back offering options to the ball holder. Obviously, it leaves them open at the back, but that goes for any attacking setup. The reason why Atalanta haven't conceded as much, however, is because of their quick defensive transitions and de Roon doing a great job in winning the ball back.
One thing that's caught my eye is how often the wide central defenders are willing to push up. That alone makes things so much more difficult for the opposition. With today's wing backs being the primary source of width, the wide defenders in a back 3 are becoming the full backs that support them. The fact that players nowadays aren't used to back-3 players pushing up so high now makes teams like Atalanta tougher to handle.
