Atalanta B.C.

What makes Atalanta so dangerous is how willing they are to overload the box when the ball is out wide. In almost every attack, they have a minimum of 3 players in the box, and quite often, they can have 5 players. That puts a ton of pressure on the opposition who then become focused on sitting back and clearing the ball, thus allowing Atalanta to win the ball quicker. This is also made possible because of Papu Gomez and a wide centre back offering options to the ball holder. Obviously, it leaves them open at the back, but that goes for any attacking setup. The reason why Atalanta haven't conceded as much, however, is because of their quick defensive transitions and de Roon doing a great job in winning the ball back.

One thing that's caught my eye is how often the wide central defenders are willing to push up. That alone makes things so much more difficult for the opposition. With today's wing backs being the primary source of width, the wide defenders in a back 3 are becoming the full backs that support them. The fact that players nowadays aren't used to back-3 players pushing up so high now makes teams like Atalanta tougher to handle.

Could they challenge Juve any time soon?
They need more depth to handle the greater number of fixtures (they partly struggled in the CL group stages because of this). They also need to improve on their back 3; they tend to concede quite a few chances by virtue of their playing style, and their defenders tend to make individual errors on occasions. They also need another option to de Roon; he's the only midfielder who protects their defence well enough.

Is there any talk in Germany about them calling up Gosens? He's had a brilliant season, will surely be on the radar of some of the top clubs in europe and LB been a weak spot for Germany ever since Lahm retired. Love watching him.

Not as much as you'd expect considering how poor our options at left back are.

Think they will run out of time to win the league this season, but I think they could well win the CL.

Goalscoring killers. They’re going to rock Paris with something special

Completely mad season they are having. If it wasn't for the two penaltys (one of them in the 90. minute) Ronaldo scored against them in the last round, they would be very close to challenging Juve for the title now. They are still within range, and have blasted past Inter and Lazio.

And today they lead 6-1 after 58. minutes. I think it is the fourth or fifth time this season they have scored more than five goals in a match. Most scoring team in Europe by far.

They have done so while still performing in the CL where they have come further than ever before.

Totally bonkers season. And as I have stated before - try to take a look at their squad. Most people wouldn't know 85% of their players. Certainly not before they started performing very well for Atalanta. Madness. I personally think that it is far more impressive than what Liverpool have done this year. I know it is an easier league, but the innovative tactics and style is amazing.

Does anyone know what’s up with Ilicic? He’s not playing much since the restart.

PSG - Atalanta will be bonkers. or some snooze fest

This team is the result of great coaching.
I Wonder If Gasperini can equal this style in a big club with more money to spend. He really didn’t get a chance at Inter.

Cannot wait for the game against PSG, hope they ababsolutely d*ck them. Atlanta in a CL semi-final would be amazing.

I backed them to win the Champions League this year. I’m really confident that they will terrorise PSG’s midfield and defence with their style of play. I just hope their defence can hold out at the other end, though.

What a fantastic team they are to watch.

This new format should help them. They can go and attack teams and it is not too many games to be played.
PSG not having played should help them too. I can see City vs Atalanta in the final.

That's highly unlikely, they're horrible. Should be an insane game though, hopefully Tuchel doesn't go all defensive.

Anyone we should look at signing
Gosens is the only one who can perhaps replace our options at LB. Other than that I can't think of anyone else who'd break into our starting XI, they're a terrifically well oiled machine, with no overt reliance on any one player.

PSG are going to have their hands full.

Honestly, their best shot may just be going toe to toe with Atalanta and hoping they have more firepower. Or maybe sitting back and absorbing the pressure and then taking advantage of their defensive frailty on the counter is the way to go. But how do you prep for a one off game knowing you are likely going to need 3-4 goals just to have a shot at a positive result? I really don't think a 5 - 4 or 6 - 5 type scoreline is out of the question here.

To think they've even bettered last season! Amazing what Gasperini is doing there. Been a long time I saw such commitment to goal-crazy attacking football without focusing much on game control. Great to watch!

Their attacking stats and records are ridiculous. They're the team to watch this year.

Josip Ilicic - 20 goals, 5 assists
Luis Muriel - 18 goals, 1 assist
Duvan Zapata - 17 goals, 5 assists
Robin Gosens - 10 goals, 8 assists
Mario Pasalic - 9 goals, 7 assists
Ruslan Malinovskiy - 8 goals, 3 assists
Alejandro Gómez - 7 goals, 18 assists

Some key player stats this season.

PSG wont have it easy, thats for sure.
Personally, i dont think they are favorites at all.

Atalanta has completely broke the myth that Serie A is defensive and boring. What a credit to the league. They are such a joy to watch. 93 goals this season. They seem to score 4, 5, 6 goals every games it's insane. Must be a dream for punters playing overs and the neutrals. Just incredible. If only they had beaten Juve, they would only be 3 points behind and have a real shot of winning Scudetto.

Gomez was magnificent v Juve at the weekend. They couldn’t get near him. A joy to watch football when it is played like that.
