Assessing this Utd squad before the summer - Who needs to go - who can stay...

Love these threads. It's what I think about trying to fall asleep some times... :)

Without getting deep into the money weeds. Admittedly I am not up on reserves enough to add anything there.

Build around

GK

DDG- contract an issue, but not as much a ball playing worry for me.

Def

Butcher
Varane
Shaw
Malacia
Dalot
Lindelof

Mid

Bruno - He needs more breaks. I guess that's a healthy Eriksen. He can't keep the pace up. Been so important for us.
Casemiro -was he ever Capt at Real? or before?
Fred
Sabitzer - if decent price, keep him over McTominay
Eriksen

Att

Rashford
Sancho
Antony
Martial - I'd assume financially it make sense to keep him?
Pellistri

So......

CB - low spend
DM - high spend
RB - medium spend
S - high spend

I‘m a very loyal person. However at United we should constantly try to improve. Instead of asking who should go, ask who can we get that improves us?

A good backup to Casemiro: Lavia. Sell McT.

Backup to Bruno: Maddison or Wirtz. Sell VdBeek.

New no.8: Bellingham, DeJong or Kokçu. Keep Eriksen.

RB upgrade: could be Frimpong. Keep AWB as defensive RB. Sell Dalot to Barça ( if they have ££).

Get strikers: Thuram/Sesko/Hojberg and or Osimhen/Muani.

Send Weghorst back and sell Martial.

Think a backup to Bruno is way down the list

There's too many variables that needs to be taken in account

A-Is Manchester United going to be sold?
B-Will the new guy has loads of money to invest in the squad?
C- When? Cause if someone buy us in August then there's little he can do for this summer transfer
D- Will he bring his own people in? Cause these people will need time to properly assess the squad and to make plans

It's also not a good idea to add so many players at one go. We've seen how that damage clubs (ex Chelsea). Thus anything above the 5-6 signings would be risky

If we ignore the obvious (ex Jones, Bailly and Telles) then I say that the players that should definitely leave are

a- Maguire. He's been sticking out like a sore thumb.
b- McT or Fred. We need a proper DM as cover/competition for Casemiro
c- AWB. We need a FB
d- Martial. Just get rid of the guy. He's useless

If we can find buyers for Sancho then it would be great as well.

That's why you do what Arsenal have done, just pay them some money to piss off out of the club.

10m each, 120m in total. Assuming you need to replace most of them, let's say 8 new players, 50m each, 400m. So half a Billion in 1 summer. Perhaps you can do that in FIFAPro.

We need 2 midfielders, a CB and a striker.

The first three because as soon as we get 1 injury the back up player is somewhere between a passenger and an asset for the opposition. The striker because webasucally don't have one.

Could do with another forward as well and a RB but those would be later priorities.

Who we get rid of is irrelevant unless Ten Hag is going to pick them ahead of better options (he doesn't generally do this), or we lose someone important and have to replace them.

I don't think we have any trouble makers left, but probably 8-9 players either with us or on loan who aren't at a good enough level to be reliable, which apart from to boost squad numbers in case of injuries and/or deprioritising competitions due to fixture pile up, makes them a bit pointless.

E.g. if lindelof plays in defence you automatically know our defence will not be good enough. Same with any midfielder other than Casemiro and Eriksen, etc. Sounds harsh but you either want to be the best team or be nice/loyal to everyone who tries their best. You can't do both unless you have an entire squad of world class players.

When you start going through things, there are lots of considerations and lots of players with question marks. But other than the obvious ones who aren't featuring (Telles, Jones, Bailly), there's really just three players where I'd say a clear "yes" at this point: Maguire, vd Beek and McTominay. (And Elanga, but only on loan)

De Gea: Tough call. I think it's clear he's not the ideal answer to ETHs requirements and time isn't on his side, but on the other hand he has shown he can be a positive factor in this team and it would eat up big resources to replace him - unless he's replaced from within. So I guess that means stay.

Henderson: He's not going to be a backup, so sooner or later you either have to use him to replace De Gea, or sell him. Don't think it's going to be the latter, so....

Alex Telles: Just get rid of him.

Harry Maguire: He clearly needs to go, IMO. Having him feature occasionally as club captain isn't good for him, and it isn't good for the club.

Viktor Lindelof: Personally I think he's perfect as the 3rd/4th CB - about as good a player as you can hope to have without having to play him regularly. However, is he up for it? There were rumblings recently. If he's not prepared to accept a squad role, then it's no good having him in.

Eric Bailly & Phil Jones: Self-explanatory.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: I think he and Dalot have been decent enough that RB isn't the critical priority it looked like at the beginning of the season. But if we're going to upgrade, I think it's him rather than Dalot who leaves.

Brandon Williams: Whatever's in the cards for him, another season of zero game time at United cannot be the best solution, for anyone.

Scott McTominay: I think it's bleeding obvious that he is a liability as the backup #6, and I just don't see a space for him anywhere else. He should be sold.

Fred: Can see it either way. He's not the backup #6, he's not really what we need at #8 either. If you assume we're bringing in both a #6 and an #8 (or one player who can do well in either role) maybe it still makes sense to have him around as a utility player who gives us something different, but there's quite a few things pointing in the direction of seeing him as a bad fit/surplus to requirements. But I guess we've already decided (signed extension, no?)

Antony Elanga: Clearly needs to go out on loan. Has regressed at United, and won't get many chances.

Jadon Sancho: It's starting to become a question, isn't it. Almost two full seasons in, and he's never been close to really establishing himself as a first-team player. And he's most effective on the left, where we are loaded.

Donny vd Beek: Enough is enough. And if we do bring in two new midfielders, we do not need him for depth.

Facundo Pellistri: I think he's shown enough that you could justify keeping him around for the coming season, but the question is if there's really the space - considering Amad is presumably coming back.

Anthony Martial: Clearly his fitness makes it impossible to rely on him as a regular starter, and the question is if he'll be happy and effective in a lesser role. Probably time to cut our losses.

Wout Weghorst: I can see a case for keeping him around as a cheap third-choice striker. But that's about it.

Marcel Sabitzer: I don't think he's done enough so far to warrant serious consideration for a permanent move. Haven't had any stinkers, but he's not had any really good games either. He just doesn't seem to have a great deal of impact.

A lot of people saying release, but unless they agree to it we cannot.

Not taking into account current loanees, I’d release/sell/maybe fire out of a cannon the following bunch:

GK: De Gea

DEF: Wan-Bissaka, Williams, Telles, Maguire, Jones, Tuanzebe, Bailly

MID: McTominay (probably fired out of a cannon) and Van de Beek

FWD: Elanga, Pellistri

There are some younger lads that can do with loans again, but I’d see the back of all of the above for a range of reasons. De Gea with our thanks. Maguire, McTominay and Wan-Bissaka for good fees for pastures new. As for the rest, they offer us nothing and I just want to see the back of them.

We need at least five or six players in the summer. What we do (or don’t do) will determine the next five years.

What do you mean? Release means they’ve come to the end of their contract and we wouldn’t renew I.e Jones
Well that or you both come to an agreement. Do we really have as many players at the end of their contract this summer?

It really depends on the ownership and how much we have to spend but I'd rather be ruthless than not -

What about RWB like Frimpong

Let’s be realistic. We have a lot of positions that needs to be renewed but we are not gonna buy that many players in one window. It has never been the United way of doing transfers

Have to put a RB/RWB in there too

De Gea - Keep, and plan on him being first choice if he'll agree to lower wages. We have greater needs right now than a new GK
Lindelof - Keep as backup LB
Jones - Release
Maguire - Sell to anyone willing to pay for him
Martinez - Keep as starting LCB
Bruno - Keep as starting CM
Martial - Keep as backup ST. Hopefully not having to rely on him as a regular he can stay fit and contribute off the bench
Rashford - Keep at starting LW
Rapist - sell him to whichever club in whichever zealot state that doesn't view women as human beings wants him
Malacia - Keep as backup/rotation LB
Eriksen - Keep as backup/rotation CM
Sabitzer - Sign permanently if we can, to continue to be backup/rotation CM
Fredrick - Keep as backup CM
Casemiro - Keep as starting CDM
Varane - Keep as starting RCB
Dalot - Sell if we get a decent offer
Antony - Keep as starting RW
Heaton - Keep as backup GK
Shaw - Keep as starting LB
Sancho - Keep as backup/rotation winger
Weghorst - Allow him to return to Burnley, with many thanks for his great work ethic
Pellistri - Keep as backup/rotation winger
Wan-Bissaka - Keep as backup/rotation RB
Butland - Allow him to return to Palace
Williams - Sell him if anyone wants him
van de Beek - Sell him if anyone wants him
Elanga - Sell him if anyone wants him
McTominay - Sell him if anyone wants him
Mengi - Send out on loan
Garnacho - Keep him as backup/rotation winger
Iqbal - Send him out on loan
Mainoo - Send him out on loan

Bailly - Sell him if anyone wants him or loan out again
Diallo - Bring him home and start to give him playing time in cups
Henderson - Bring him home and have him compete with Heaton for backup playing time
Tuanzebe - Bring him home and give him some minutes occasionally
Mejbri - Bring him home and give him some minutes
Shoretire - Send him out on loan again
Fernandez - Send him out on loan again
Telles - Sell him if anyone wants him or loan out again

Look to buy:
A starting striker like Osimhen or Kane
A starting CM like De Jong
A starting RB like Frimpong
A backup RCB, not sure who
A young CDM who can learn from Casemiro

If we cannot sign Sabitzer permanently, we'll need someone to take his place, like maybe Mount or Rabiot

We do all these things and we'll be competing for the league next season, and we'll be set up to make a decent run in the Champions League

------------------------------------Kane-----------------------------------------
----------------------------------Martial----------------------------------------
Rashford------------------------------------------------------------Antony
Garnacho----------------------------------------------------------Pellistri
------------------------------------Bruno----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------Sancho---------------------------------------

--------------------------Martinez-------Varane----------------------------
---------------------------Lindelof-------------?--------------------------------

Then in 2025 we can look towards finding a new, modern GK for the next decade.
