Gaming Assassin's Creed: Shadows

Came out last night, played a bit today. Loving it. A bit too stop start with a lot of cut scenes in the prologue but the world is lovely as always for these games, and I'm really enjoying the combat. Forgot it was an assassin's creed game at the beginning until I got the hidden blade and was like oh yeah, this whole thing. Really enjoying every bit of it so far I have to say.

That's nice to read.

What’s the combat like? I hated it in the last one. Ac3 probably had the best combat
What do you count as the last one?

I'd say it's similar enough to odyssey combat, quick and smooth, not like Ghost of Tsushima or Sekiro of course but much smoother than Valhalla which was a bit clunky IMO. Need to dodge and deflect and then you have quick and heavy attacks and charged versions to break enemies blocks. Haven't tried other weapons yet though.

Mirage I meant. I finished it but I wasn’t a fan of the combat at all. I didn’t mind odyssey’s to be fair. Will buy it eventually but need to finish ghost of Tsushima first. It’s funny you mentioned that game actually considering I’m playing it at the moment.

Ah alright, yeah never played mirage, didn't seem like it offered anything special compared to origins/odyssey/Valhalla and now shadows.

gorgeous game. Enjoying it so far. Only a few hours in, but it captured me in a way Valhalla didn’t.

I already know the first couple hours is gonna be a slog for me if it's more cinematics than gameplay. Sounds worth it though

It is - the backstory is good but I feel it could have been more streamlined.

But really enjoying it once it opens up!

What gameplay settings are you using?

Careful.

The ShillUp gang will be in here soon to tell you why you should hate it.

I recommend playing it on expert stealth and difficulty and on immersion mode with the Japanese/Portuguese. The voice acting is considerably better.
Is there any evidence they shill or do you just not agree with their reviews/they don’t like the ass creed games?

The fact that they included that sounds encouraging.

10 hours in and I'm loving it. Its probably going to be my favourite AC game since the Ezio trilogy and AC3.

I bought it on release day and have installed it, but i'm still playing Veilguard and I want to finish it before I put all my focus on Shadows. Not long to go though, so i'll be enjoying it soon enough.

Watched a video of them in English and it sounded horrible. Definitely go the immersion route.
Exploration mode, expert difficulty, customize the HUD to remove a lot of the alerts and immersion mode for voice acting and it's a great game.

I went for the 2nd top one, not the expert or whatever.

But I customised so it's always a one hit kill assassination, CBA with assassinating someone and them still being alive.

Wandering about an area to find 3 shrines can feck off though, also, don't deviate from paths of you're basically in the middle of a jungle and can't see jack shit

I did the one hit kill assassination too but with expert difficulty. It's honestly worth it to make it expert with this though, haven't found it too difficult, occasionally will get killed in fights but just gives it a bit of a challenge and the stealth isn't that difficult with it just makes you be more careful. The one hit assassination tales away a lot of the difficulty though.

Holding forward and randomly clicking jump/parkour while not being able to see you character in the woods/jungle/mountains/etc. is quintessential AC experience

Yeah I feel it's kind of cheating, but I'm an assassin FFS! I'd expect to be able to stab people in the neck and them be dead.

I might up it to expert actually.

I think quite a bit of the assassin skill tree for the chick is redundant with the one hit kill too.

Is it as repetitive as usual?

Often with AC I give them a go every so often and enjoy playing for the first while but get bored of the rinse and repeat nature of the game. I haven't finished one since Black Flag which was the first one I played.

From the youtube reviews I've watched, it looks very similar to Ghost of Tsushima in terms of mechanics, combat and theme.

Is it worth forking out for or is it basically the as GoT?

I love Odyssey and Origins, and GoT. You make it sound like being similar would be bad!

GoT is pretty identical in mechanics to those AC games.

What games aren’t repetitive? It’s in large part an exploring game, and quests give you a reason to go to a region. If you don’t like that, stay away.

Oh, I love GoT. It's a great game. I just don't want to fork out if it's basically the same.

Am I to take that as a yes?
It is a bit repetitive but the story, characters carry the game. I dont know if i kinda like or dislike that the game tells you where the person hangs around but you've to find out where exactly he is by yourself. They give you a general area and you can use scouts to find him that way.

Agree - have gone with the one hit kill too!

Have the stealth on expert but the combat on normal I think.

  ninja skills maxed out!

There's always this type of shite in games tbh. Its not something I'd have even thought of. I won't be abusing it either.

People actually really scrutinise ubisoft games too much, they're really no worse than most other games.
Yeah, it wouldn't put me off the game. Just made me laugh.

For those playing with the authentic voice stuff (Japanese and Portuguese) how the hell do you play while reading shite all the time? Like, they say some interesting things as you're actually moving about or looking at things. I nearly tried it but knew I'd be too distracted by the writing at the bottom.

How big is this compared to Origins / Odyssey / Valhalla?

Those games were just too big for me.

I don't think I've even got the option to play as the big fella again after the tutorial yet

For those playing, what do you think of the following:

Resources / base stuff: already seems like I've got an abundance of it. Like, I don't even see the point in smuggling stuff using the scouts now. My level restricts me more than anything, and reckon by time I unlock the other base stuff I'll easily have enough resources anyway.

Chests/loot: same again, don't feel it's worth grabbing half the stuff.

Interiors, not a fan of these at all, seems like stupid mazes half the time just to find a ration or some shite.

Grappling hook is hit and miss, you've gotta be in the right position to use it, nice idea, but implemented a bit clunky.

Enjoying the graphics, I've actually put it into quality mode instead of performance for a change and really the 30fps isn't that bad in this game for some reason. I might actually bump it to the balanced mode at some point.

Sometimes the game feels as if it lags when parrying and dodging, not sure if that's just my shite reaction time though.

Storyline seems pretty good so far and there is so much to do.

Mental amount of tower types to climb and reveal the land, however each tower barely reveals anything, reckon they could have done with fewer, with big reveal areas tbh.

I'm 25 hours into it now and I've stopped caring and playing the game. I was loving the first 10-15 or so hours but after that, it feels like I'm chasing villian of the week each hour. It gets repetitive and starts filling up your screen with 50 more people to assassinate later. What I really miss about Ubisoft is that they used to write great villians. I don't even care anymore who they are because I get to face them for 5 mins and that's it. All I'm hearing is just names and I'm supposed to be impressed, intimidated or something? Why couldn't they just focus on 1 or 2 villians.

Anyway ive given up playing it. Its a 6/10 game.

Sounds like all their recent RPG assassins creeds. The OG games had so much life and character. Interesting characters and actually good story/writing. The modern games are fun for 20/30 hours. Then you realise it’s just unnecessary bloat and no story to tie it together. It’s a massive shame for someone like me who used to love assassins creed. The problem is these games still have an audience who don’t mind the mindless tasks and tick box exercises and will happily fork out for this experience. I just know it’s not the experience it once was, as it’s not aimed at me anymore. Playing KDC2 and that is everything a modern open world RPG should aspire to be.

Aye, all the villains could have been fleshed out a little more, even if it meant fewer of them.

The mystery of them behind the masks is a bit intriguing, that's what they're going for I think.

I liked the main villain in GoT, I actually preferred him to the guy I was or any of my allies. Much prefer the good guys in shadows though.

I'll definitely complete shadows, I knew what I was getting when I bought it, it's pretty much as expected.

I am however sick of going to assassinate someone then feckin hitting them with my katana instead, been a problem for ages in AC games

Putting the fast travel points in enemy castles is such a shit way of doing it.

Also, everytime I get rainy or snowy season, the next cutscene moves it back to better weather, think it's story driven, but it's annoying. Was having fun stomping about in puddles.

They're not just in castles, you can unlock them for 800 mon on the map, they're called kakegure or something like that.
