Ashes II - 2013/14 - In Australia

Atleast they've saved the follow on.

This has been incredible stuff by Johnson. Hostile bowling.

The way Carberry's wicket was setup was awesome! What an epic collapse..

What the hell has happened to Tremlett?

Bowling at 125km consistently. Also Cook has set an ODI field for Warner, easy singles all around.

Well I didn't expect that scorecard after not paying attention all day. Very good day for the Aussies.

I don't think Oz bowled that well. Some hostile bowling yes, but Broad showed how to tackle that.

Both KP and Root gifted their wickets. Bell, Prior and Swann buckled under pressure. Cook looked like he wanted to cry in the dressing room.

I always expect it, and another in any test series.

Didn't see this coming. The track looked quite good to bat on. Was it more of batsmen throwing away their wickets or just great bowling?

Completely turns the game around. Aus should go on and win this comfortably now.

Surprised England came out so strongly on the first day to be honest. I haven't heard what happened yet beyond the scorecard but I wouldn't be surprised if the Aussies turn out to have put a decent score on the board after England have bat.

 Called it

He had an average of 22 at the point I posted and was man of the series for Australia in the last Ashes.

It's not like I made the comment and he took 70 wickets in the next 5 minutes.

I'm glad I went to bed just before we started the collapse. Painful viewing on the highlights this morning.

Our batsmen have it coming though, a collapse was all about them for a while. Bell held it together last series.

Yeah, the batting has been horrific for ages. Most of these players were averaging around 50 in 2011 and now two years later they're down about 5 runs across the board.

It's worrying that apparently our batsmen can't play when the ball is moving, is fast or is spinning.

What do you think of Cook?

Fills his boot against crap bowling and does not do much against the best bowlers.

The flaw in ever predicting or even commenting on cricket.

I think that's harsh, I think he's generally the one player on the England side that I'd want to bat for me in any conditions.

He's basically scored runs all around the world. Averages over 40 everywhere apart from the UAE and New Zealand.

Just seems to be in poor nick at the minute. I don't think it's even a problem with what's being bowled to him either, he was very good on the front foot against New Zealand earlier in the year.

UAE and NZ?

Yeah exactly.

UAE is obvious, everyone had a horror show in the one series he's played there but NZ is just down right bizarre.

Especially as he averaged 60+ in Australia.

Also surprising is he averages about 14 runs more outside of England.

The bottom line is that this series could be very variable and highly entertaining.

Sadly was predictable. Boycott is a bit annoying at times but he's one of the few media outlets who doesn't overhype the England team, and was right to declare yesterday just "decent" for England as he knew an England collapse was quite likely.

Ghaliboy's incessant ranting about how bad Mitch Johnson would be if he played isn't looking too bright at the moment.

I don't even think Johnson bowled that well.

He was absolutely all over the shop when he pitched it up, and he had no control whatsoever when he was banging it in short either.

It was more about England's absolute inability (bordering on hilarious) to cope with the short ball at all than it was excellent bowling by Johnson.

I went to bed just after Pietersen got out but I was thoroughly impressed with Nathan Lyon, no freebies, settled early, and built the pressure on Carberry that Johnson exploited.

Haven't watched the highlights and don't plan too either but I can definitely believe that. Our batting has been so fecking brittle for ages now. We're usually shite in the first match so hopefully we'll get this defeat out of the way and start batting half decently at least.

Not surprised. Not particularly worried.
I think it's quite a foolish plan from Australia, personally.

That said, England seem to bat horrendously in their first innings of every away series, so it will probably end up looking like genius whether it is or not.
2-1 to England. Australia to win this one before being outplayed for the majority of the next four.

"England have an 82 page booklet on what to eat. One guy bowls at 90mph and they can't handle it" - Geoffrey Boycott

Haha. Why does Boycott not do TV commentary stints anymore? He's quality.

Care to rethink this one? We were pathetic today/yesterday, I have seen such unconfident batting from us in one innings for a long, long time. We will be lucky to hold this one out for a draw I think.

Eng have come back from first match defeats. They lost the first test badly in India and made a great come back after that.

Only chance Oz has of wining this series is if Clarke is at his absolute best and Watson can muster up some kind of form.

I also think they should promote Haddin to no.4 or 5.

I know they have, I was kind of messing around.

This England team doesn't feel as strong as they have done in previous Ashes matches. But luckily neither do the Aussies, so this could just be a purple patch for them.

I like Bailey. I've never seen him play first class cricket but his batting technique seems simple. I hope he has a good series, that'd make this series competitive. I think he has the capacity.

This test is not over yet, anyway.. Last series as well Cook batted for like 2 days at the same ground and saved the match.

I think it is over, unless time is lost. There's a fair amount of spin in the pitch, already. Assuming the pace won't completely die, I can't see England batting out two days.
