Ashes I - 2013 - In England

This could be a painful few days, I'd forgotten as an England fan how bad it could be for debutants given it's normally been just one at a time and they have been eased in as well.

That's gonna be a real costly drop from Cook. Could have been 151-4 with two new batsmen in.

If we lose by an innings, this is going to make picking up the Ashes at the end a bit of a downbeat affair.

New ball will be important, if England can nab these two out perhaps they can get a bit of momentum going.

So Watson has scored a century and has now successfully reviewed a decision!

What the feck is going on?

Smith's gonna get a century too isn't he? This looks like a batting paradise, will be interesting to see if the pitch breaks up a bit in for the spinners.

Just about a legal ball! Great catch.

Well played Watson. Hope the Aussies don't collapse now.

Big wicket for England, anything less than 450 on this road keeps us in the game.

Woakes has looked impressive for Warwickshire, but it seems he isn't good enough for International cricket. Doubt he'll be chosen again in the near future.

Has anyone seen him bowl before?

Surely he can't bowl like he did today for his county as he's got himself loads of wickets.

What he served up today was genuine sunday pub cricket.

Horrible result for Australia.

Watson at 3 for the return series..

See no point in it. Faulkner's not a #7 yet, I think. Good enough to play as a specialist bowler, and that's where he should have been, instead of Starc.

He's a very good bowler on seaming wickets. I think he would've done fine, had they picked him at Trent Bridge, the Riverside or even Lords, where he could've used the slope effectively. I can only assume their thinking was that the spinners would be doing most of the work in this match, so they wanted a third seamer who bats. That wouldn't be such a bad plan if they hadn't then decided to pick a spinner who's never played international cricket before.

It should have been a disaster.

England just created the perfect storm for themselves.

Btw, I have no problem with Woakes' afternoon/evening bowling as long as he contributes with the bat, silly picking a guy with no weapons to be a third seamer but he can at least gum up one end and create pressure.

They will be landing strips with absolutely nothing in them. Perfect batting strips for him to get on the front stool and slay the ball like he did last night. Good on him - if he can dominate like that and steady the team in a counter attacking way then go 3 and do it.

It's the chopping and changing and dropping that's the shit part.

That was a brilliant snare from Pieterson as well in the deep. The LB shout Watson got right  my god how did he even give that out!?

I have to say that Watson scored runs but looked genuinely grateful. He didn't go stupid and think he was king of the world he was pretty subdued in his celebrations. Happy for him if he can use this he's a devastating batsman when the ball is doing absolutely nothing.

Kerrigan  Wow. Pub to Test cricket riches story...

I'm livid at the selectors for throwing him in, like this. I've been watching him play for Lancashire, for years, and he has it in him to be a test bowler, I feel. You should not pick a young spinner, with no international matches under his belt, in an Ashes match, even if it is a dead rubber. It's taking a huge risk and it could set him back, a long way, in terms of confidence.

It seems that Panesar was meant to be the second spinner, for this series, and that went awry when he pissed on some bouncers. They've then looked around, seen Rashid, Briggs and Borthwick are having disappointing seasons, and thought "let's give that lad at Lancs a go, he's doing well" ignoring the fact they haven't allowed him the opportunity to be 'blooded' first. I would much rather they'd picked any of those three, regardless of form. They at least have some international experience. My preference would've been for the third seamer to be Tremlett, who could've been quite effective on this pitch, and let Root do some bowling.

I just hope that England do well enough for Kerrigan to get a decent bowl, in the second innings. He's capable of being a real handful, if he can find his nerve. This is a guy who has the best figures, for a Lancashire bowler, since 1953.

Did he really impress? Because from that ambling in and tossing up complete lollies... There HAS to be something there because on that showing.. Yeesh.

I thought we had some shit spinners in our country...

I think he's got more potential to be a test spinner than any Australian, currently going, and anyone England have, excluding Swann. I haven't been as annoyed about a selection, before, as I am by this. It's a mistake, on the selectors part, that he hasn't played before. It could be a much bigger one, to pick him now.

Rant rant rant!

, huge claim. But then again I've only seen this 0/50odd off 6 overs. Makes him look a Steve Smith tier spinner on that showing. So I can't really make that kind of judgement. I even said he looked nervous as hell in his first over.

Steven O'keefe really should have gotten call up to the NT in 2010 and onward during that horrible horrible Beer/Doherty experiment. He has been pretty solid domestically since then and I think he was the best spinner last season. (Not 100% sure tbh but he took a swag at a good ER.) I think he even took 5 against England in a tour match around then as well? Again a victim of the red tape issue.

edit: God our pace attack was shocking back then as well! Dougy fecking Bollinger. Local Seven Hills lad the club I played for as a junior. I remember facing him in the nets at 15 thinking 'holy shit this guy is ridiculously fast..' still can't believe he played for Australia.

I don't know much about O'Keefe. I've heard good things. His first class stats suggest that NSW haven't been picking him as much as they should.

He was the captain and he stood down for........................................... Whats his name. Might have to check who it is. Thornley?.. Nah.. Um Mail?... Um.. /googles... BEN ROHRER!

Again though, yet another red tape issue. FC stats not being picked. Getting picked and dropped and told to work on FC game.

He's only played 22 first class games and he captained New South Wales? ... I really don't get the Aussie system!

Yep, he did pretty poorly in truth.

Luke Butterworth is really someone to be given a call-up as well. His figures with the ball last year were ridiculous. Can bat a bit as well.

Just seen this bit. Played for Worcestershire, for a bit, so I saw some of him. He really was just decent pace with nothing else in his locker! My main memory of his stint was him clean bowling a guy, the first ball of the day, with a cracking yorker, and then looking completely useless as the opposition went at over a run a ball, before declaring.

Clogger. Plain and simple. Left arm with the odd natural shape into the right hander . That is literally stonewall it.

I went to the presentation for Seven Hills a couple of years ago and he was the guest speaker. All he did was sit out front sinking schooners, huffing darts then come in and give this huge rant on how stupid CA is and that they didn't offer him a contract and how shitty he was.

What a knob .

There will be play today at some point which is probably good news for Aus as they have runs on the board.

It's raining :rage:

Hopefully the rain and a nights sleep will calm young kerrighan down abit to feel normal and so bowl to his potential.

I want to see how good he is, because yesterday was a bizarre and bad joke.

England's over rate has been disgraceful this last hour, so defensive already.

SPUD Smith! Well done champ. Great innings. Hopefully the pitch will juice up a bit and we can get some wickets.

I feel a bit sorry for Woakes, he's been decent for the most part I think but he's been lumped in with Kerrigan and written off because of it.

I hope Alastair Cook gets banned for a match for this over-rate. 36 overs in like three hours is a disgrace.

This English Team inspite of having world class players have a shocking defensive mentality.
