Arsenal Sign Andre Santos

That's harsh. Jenkinson is young and learning. He is much better than we made him look.

Fair enough, I've only see a bit of Jenkinson, but if he can play that badly there's no way he's ready to be the starting RB for that club. I wouldn't want to be stuck starting him against a top team again.

I mean, we get 3 injuries and our huge reserve of defenders is nearly stretched to the limit. What will Arsenal do?

Maybe he has talent but did you see his positioning for the move which led to Theo and his argument and then our first goal from the subsequent throw in?

Yes I did. Remember though the the kid is about 19 and this is like his 4th game with the big boys. I thought he was excellent vs Udinese, Newcastle and Liverpool prior to this. For me I blame his display on the gross lack of leadership his center backs displayed vs us. With a player like Vermalaen on pitch to guide him he has proved way better.

Jenkinson has potential but shouldn't be in the first team squad just yet.

Really don't rate Andre Santos. I'm always baffled by him being in the national lineup. Never seen him impress or being slightly good. Then again, Kleber and Gilberto got a lot of games too.

Haven't been impressed with him in a Brazil shirt at all, but I'd be surprised if he was worse than Clichy who was dogshit for Arsenal for much of the last year.

Can't be worst than Clichy. At least he looks good going forward. No idea how he defends though.

Bizarre, he looked like he was capable of none of that in the Copa America

The goal at 1:20 was nice
They've got their version of Bale

I still think they should have gone for Enrique. He is better defensively and younger.

He also cost the exact same amount of money and has three seasons of experience in England which gives him an even bigger edge. Liverpool moved in quickly and secured him though so Arsenal, as per usual, were left with second or third best.

In fairness, I don't think Gibbs is really good enough as a left-back. He plays like a winger out of position, as I think that's what he is. It was the same with Traore, who I think has always looked a bit hopeless at the back, but did ok for Pompey in his spell there in midfield. No idea if Santos will be an improvement on Gibbs mind you, but they had to bring in another player as their squad was paper thin.

I don't think Gibbs was ever good enough and he's incredibly injury prone to boot. Just seems strange that Wenger took so long to come to the same conclusion. Enrique would have been a cracking signing for them but even if that wasn't an option, surely they could have got someone in before the season started?

Correct. Wenger obviously preferred to go with Gibbs but ended up panicking and rushing through the signing of a new player of debatable quality instead. Story of their summer really.

It's weird - Wenger is still known as the guy that revolutionised English football in some ways, yet now he's looking out of touch.

I read some great stuff about the lengths City's scouts went to when looking at Aguera - they were putting together a file on all aspects of him for months and months before the transfer - and then you see Wenger making seemingly last-minute, snap decisions on players he's bringing in to the team.

On the FW podcast yesterday they read out a comment from their Brazilian expert who reckoned the signing of Santos was a damning indictment of their South American scouts. It seems he's really not rated at all in his homeland.

Rafael Honnigstein also said that Wenger was asked repeatedly about Arteta in the past (back when Arteta was playing his best football for Everton) and always maintained, off the record, that Arteta wasn't good enough for Arsenal.

Not got round to listening to that yet - I'm interested in Rafa's comments on Mertesacker too.

He thinks he'll potentially complement Vermaelen quite well, stylistically.

Coming off the back of a poor season though and he gave the impression he definitely wouldn't consider him in the top tier of European central defenders.

I'm sure Honigstein still doesn't get the fact that the PL is played at break neck pace compared to the Bundesliga - I'd really worry that Mertesacker is going to get absolutely raped in the PL. I see what he means about complementing Vermaelen well - its that whole silk/steel, Rio/Terry, Rio/Vidic, Smalling/Jones thing - but Rio and Smalling are the quick ones in those partnerships. Mertesacker is slower than Vermaelen.

Agreed. The theory is that Vermaelan attacks the ball while Mertesacker mops up but that sounds like a recipe for disaster on big pitches, with the high line that Arsenal like to keep. The Gallas-Vermaelen partnership worked quite well because Gallas had the recovery pace to bale Vermaelen out if he got caught upfield but it doesn't sound as though Mertesacker will be able to do the same thing. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Yeah, you seem confident this Santos bloke is better than Clichy.

I've never watched him, so haven't a clue but I think Clichy is a better player than a lot of people seem to think. Lost his way a wee bit for the last year or two (as part of a generally gash back five) but he's put in some absolutely top class performances for Arsenal in the past.

I think Clichy is awful, shocking in fact. The second Ashley Cole left that club we started to rape them and no-one benefitted more than Ronaldo and later on Nani.

I've only seen Santos for Brazil, he's a footballer, we'll see how his defending holds up but from what I've seen he'll seriously struggle to not be an upgrade on Clichy.
