Edit to add: Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday being the same day as pancake day/Shrove Tuesday in the UK, the day before you fast for lent in Christianity. It's supposed to be one last party or feast before a fast isn't it? Mardi Gras = loads of excess before the fast, pancake day, well you just use up eggs, butter, milk whatever before supposedly giving one of them up or cutting down on them.
New Orleans being known in particular for large Mardi Gras celebrations, but they don't just have it on the Tuesday really. It's kind of morphed into a every weekend thing too as far as I know.
