The last WGA strike lasted 22 weeks.
I can understand why movie and tv drama writers want royalties, I think it's only fair.
It's unfair though that writers want royalties before the studios break even. Basically, they want to earn a profit while the financiers take all the losses, should a movie flop.
It's also completely insane that reality and game show writers want the same royalties as movie and tv drama writers. The writers of Survivor etc. want the same amount of royalties as the writers of Heroes and Oscar-winning movies. It's a crazy thought when you consider how much work that goes into a screenplay - as the saying goes, it takes about a year to write a screenplay that works (with a water proof story, tight knit scenes with concepts for each scene, water proof character arcs etc.).
