Television Arcane - Netflix (League of Legends show)

8 episodes into Season 3 and - I cannot stress this enough - I have not got a fecking clue what is going on. It still looks incredible but boy oh boy has it crawled up its own arse. So many random new characters and things happening for no obvious reason. Bit of a mess really. Will stick with it though.

There’s your problem, think you’re watching a different show.

 Do you think he'll realise there's only been two seasons?

I've been rewatching it, just finished episode 3 of season 2. You notice so much more in a rewatch and i'm appreciating the level of detail in the animations so much more now i'm not focussed so much on the dialogue. Jinx in particular is animated so well throughout.

Adored it. Even the end which reading this thread seems to be disliked by a fair few. Ambessa walking up the steps out of haze is a top tier villain ‘entrance’.

I also got misty eyed at
“I just want my partner back”

I legit felt the same. I got so confused, and I rarely feel like I get confused when watching shows or movies.

I thought season 1 was way more concise for the viewer to follow.

I still enjoyed the show, but I thought season 1 was vastly superior.

Certainly feels like it! If I hear one more random makey uppy word that I’m supposed to understand but means absolutely nothing I’m turning the fecking thing off for good.
There’s only 2 seasons so far, not sure what 3rd season you’re watching but it ain’t arcane.

Phew. Glad I’m not the only one! I think it’s just a personal preference thing. I enjoyed The Hobbit (novel) much more than Lord of The Rings books. I just generally glaze over as soon as you’re in the realms of “lore” and people geeking out over the back story of minor characters and multiple storylines. That sort of thing just isn’t for me.

I would still think S2 is great television if I’d never seen S1 (it still looks absolutely incredible) but definitely finding this less enjoyable.

Have you watched Legend of Vox Machina?

Not sure what's up as I've quite enjoyed the first season but I just can't seem to get back into it. The visuals are brilliant but the story just doesn't seem captivating anymore, I mean I'm still in the middle of the 4th episode and I've started watching I think on the next day of this season's premiere.

Maybe rewatching it from the scratch would've been a better idea.

Yeah, I think watching Season 1 before going into the 2nd season is really important as it's a very smooth transition. I had remembered very little of the story before that and it throws you directly back into the deep end immediately.

Season 2 doesn't hold your hand with characters or story and it time jumps several times which is probably why it seems a little disconnected at times. The only storyline I really struggled to follow was the Ambasia and Black Rose plot, but it becomes much clearer with a 2nd viewing after knowing how Season 2 ends.

I know people complain about S2 pacing, but actually S1 pacing is just as fast. There tends to be a small time jump between every 3 episode arc, which is shown either through animated musical sequences or through dialogue. It's one of those shows that you have to really watch it and not get distracted otherwise you'll miss important details. For what it's worth, Season 2 really gets motoring past episode 4.

I don't think there's many new characters at all in season 2 though? Maddie, Isha are the main new characters with Steb and Loris (the two in the 5 hit group). All the other characters were in season 1.

None of those words mean anything to me.

Don’t take it personally. People have different tastes. Fantasy epics aren’t my thing. They never have been. But I can occasionally get into them when the narrative is simple and stripped down and there are other things about them which make them seem original and interesting to me. I already mentioned how I liked The Hobbit novel more than LOTR. Similarly, I enjoyed (most of) the first season of GoT but found all the spin offs a boring mess. With this show it was the animation and visuals that kept me hooked in the first season, in GoT it was the way it was so brutal and willing to kill off anyone, at any time.

S1 worked for me, this season has been much less enjoyable. No big deal though.

All good. They aren't words, they're names. Doesn't really sound like you were paying attention tbf. I mean the other day you thought you were watching season 3!

Edit: Out of curosity Pogue, when did you watch S1? Feel like this season may have suffered from the sheer length of time it took to produce.

It feels too me like they were trying to cram in to much story into the one season, so much so it just slipped past things jumped around and brought in new people, while killing off old ones after a distinct lack of screen time. I reckon they had an overall plot arc, but knew they wouldn't have the time to do an additional season after the length of time it took to make first one. So just crammed it all into one final one.

In the end they made a very disjointed series which is a shame as the first season was fantastic.

Just finished it. I thought I was ready for the end, turns out I wasn't.

I'm seeing a lot of negative sentiment but I thought the final act was fantastic, just like the rest of season 2. Sure, this season was generally messier than the first. There were some jarring jumps and some character motivations suffered from the breakneck pacing a little, but these are only minor complaints for me personally. I guess you could say it was more a season of highs and lows compared to the first, but the highs were so exceptional that I'm fine with that.

Would I have liked another season to space it out a bit more and give certain characters, relationships and narrative beats a bit more time to breathe? Absolutely. However, with how insanely expensive it is to produce, that was probably never realistic. I'm just happy we got a second season at all.

Anyway, sad it's over. I love these characters - I don't think any show has ever managed to get me this invested. Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn and Jayce are top tier but so many others had their time to shine as well. It'll take some time to digest it all, but I'm definitely rewatching the whole thing from the beginning again at some point.

Finished it now. Strong finish. Kind of made up for the confusing middle section. Still fairly baffled about a lot of what happened but very much enjoyed all the pretty pictures and kick ass action scenes. Definitely the best animated show I’ve seen on any of the streaming services.

I’m not sure repeatedly bringing up that typo is quite the gotcha everyone thinks it is. I watched S1 pretty soon after it came out.

Yeah, maybe you simply forgot a lot because it was three years ago when S1 came out? I would probably have been the same because I really didn't remember much of S1 when I rewatched it before S2.

Feel free to ask questions as the only confusing part which I felt like they didn't communicate very well was the Ambasia/Black Rose storyline and yet a lot of that plotline will continue with their next show as clearly hinted at in the final act.

You should watch Blue Eye Samurai which is as good/better.

You should give Legend of Vox Machina and The Dragon Prince a try.

First season of The Dragon Prince can be visually appalling though. They've basically animated the thing at a lower framerate, making it look stuttery like a bad stop-motion. That the series still managed to get more seasons and a big fanbase is because despite this, the writing, worldbuilding, character and world design as well as the characters are great.
Thankfully they've listened to the community, about none of which praised the choice in framerate and many hated it, and went to a normal framerate from season two forward.

A sneak peak at life after Arcane (not a new series, at least not yet).

Its like the pitch meeting video for Netflix to greenlight the Noxus Spinoff. The Black Rose reveal is what I was waiting for in Arcane. They really should have included it to tie it off.

Definitely. The Noxus series is going to be great though. Years away, but great.

Was obvious they'd go to Noxus next, after they've already prepared the stage in Arcane. In terms of both champions and lore they are the least interesting of the League regions to me, but we'll see how well they manage. Piltover wasn't exactly my favourite either but Arcane was still brilliant, after all.
