Paying a premium because there isn't long left of the transfer window, Ajax know we desperate, there is a Man United tax, and Antony has huge potential that could be reached.
You get flops in every league. It happens, especially as clubs are always looking to get the next big thing. You could also argue that near enough every transfer is expensive and overpriced these days, and you have to pay big money to get the top talents. We had to go big with Sancho. The only alternative is getting these players earlier or developing them through the youth system.
It's going to be a high price whatever the end total is. But, if he comes in and is a mainstay in our team for the best part of the decade, then it'll be worth it. We could always go for cheaper players and they could still end up being flops. If the club deems him to be the one to take us forward, or part of the solution, then it's worth exploring.
How many other sides can A) meet Ajax's demands and B) are a good fit? The only one I can really think of is Chelsea.

Not sure that's true though, I think the team has to do well and win things for that to be the case. Shaw has been here for nearly 10 years and Fred 5 years and they've both been mainstays. They've not been outright flops but can't say we're delighted with them.
For the money we're talking he'll have to be a key player performing well for it to be worth it.

It's not true. Spotrac is bullshit. Look at the clubs' financial reports instead. There's not much difference between us, Liverpool, City (who probably cook their books anyway), and Chelsea in wage expenditures. Except in the last year (probably), because we added Sancho, Varane, and Ronaldo last summer without selling anyone. But generally speaking all the media reports in recent years about us paying way higher wages than everyone else are clearly bullshit.

I'm absolutely not worried about the club's finances with this deal. If we were signing Phil Foden, Vinicius, Mbappe, Haaland, Gnabry, etc for the fee I'd be all for it. They're worth it. He isn't. All this does is guarantee he'll be a flop and will be getting loads of abuse soon.

Actually, I agree. You raise a great point. I should've said if he's a mainstay in a successful team. Part of that will be on him, and part of that will be on the club and ensuring that they develop him through coaching and good management. That's the part I'm more dubious about, to be honest.

The danger with comparing players is that the first metric people will look at is goals scored. Richarlison, for example, has 53 goals in 152 total appearances, so the £60million for him doesn't look too bad when you just look at that. But, it's much more complicated than that.
